If you're not watching this you're missing an outstanding series. It's not for the feint of heart and the horror of war is on full display but it's completely riveting.
The more I watch it, the more I wonder how any of our service men and women come home sane. If you really want to challenge your intestinal fortitude, try watching Baghdad ER. It's another documentary on the war and the amazing people in a combat hospital.
I actually just read the book this past weekend and found it to be very well done.
I'm looking forward to catching up on the show as well. I've seen the first episode and based on that limited impression I think they've done a pretty good job of distilling the book.
As a side note, I was surprised to discover that the guy who plays Sgt. Rudy Reyes in the show is, in fact, Sgt. Rudy Reyes. There's an interesting interview with him and Evan Wright over at NPR.
baggachipz: Who cares about Japan, let them have their silly pointless dog games and countless re-hashes of anime-based dragon princess super lucky crapitty crap.
I am having a blast watching this show. They do a great job in making you pissed off just like the characters are, especially with the supply truck situation. It's a great show.
It'd OK to think that Rudy is beautiful. We all do.
Great show. I can't decide if it's taking a side on the war, which I guess means it isn't. Either way, it's great. I feel some of the a-hole characters are a bit cartoony, a little too stupid, too easy to hate. Didn't seem like there would be a real person like "Captain America" who'd make it in the Marines at all, let alone to an officer's rank.

I don't have HBO anymore, but I caught a couple of episodes when I was traveling for work. I liked what I saw so much that I picked up the book at the airport and have added the series to my Netflix queue. I just finished watching HBO's other fine mini-series, John Adams.
Well I really enjoyed the last episode. They did a great job in showing how screwed thing got once they started putting combat marines to be the police of the city.

I thought that the show was saying the opposite - that their mistake was that they didn't use the marines to police the cities. They removed the old infrastructure, but brought nothing of their own to replace it. Fick is constantly asking to be allowed to patrol the streets and stop looters and general criminals.

Right but in the same episode didn't he refuse to go into a patrol at night because he felt it was too dangerous?
He was ordered to not go into a night patrol because it was too dangerous. Another team refused to mark land mines at night.
no I just re-watched the scene.

What I got from the last show is every scene everything would just confuse them even more. At first the people want help and they want to give them more in the neighborhood where they beg them to stay, then they are getting frustrated with the people in scene where they are helping the children and the crowd gets restless, then they are getting more confused when they bring water but the people refuse to accept it. Add in the interpreter who comes out of nowhere who seems actually useful then disappears and they are told was a spy compared to the other interpreter they couldn't trust the entire series.
They do a good job of limiting the amount of times Sunni and Shia are mentioned and who's who so you kinda get the same confusing feeling the Marines are getting of who wants help who doesn't.
I just became aware of this series thanks to this thread (don't watch much TV and don't have HBO).
I was a Navy Corpsman who served with a Marine STA platoon - we did a lot of cross training with both 1st and 4th Recon (mid 90s during the period where the USMC was refocusing their force recon and special operations groups).
I grabbed a copy of the first show through less than legal means. Overall, I am very impressed with the show and it's obvious desire to portray the events as close to reality as possible. Soooo glad I got out when I did...
Have since added this to my "must acquire at earliest possible moment" status. Any ideas when they're gonna be released on DVD?
I'm not exactly sure what it is I am doing here...
I haven't, but thanks for the heads up.

I plan too once it comes to Netflix. I don't have HBO anymore. It's a good book as well if you are into, uh, reading.

Watching and loving every minute of it!
The book was simply fantastic, and the production team has done a great job keeping the series faithful to the source material.

Love this show. The first episodes rant on the root of all evil had me laughing like a maniac.
So hell did freeze over after all; Welcome to Skjold!
I read the book some time ago, it was a fantastic read.

I just watched the first episode last night.

Makes me interested in the book.

I'm liking it so far. It also makes me wish that the a-hole Sergeants Major and the clueless officers weren't so common.
For a slightly different point of view on the unit I'd suggest One Bullet Away by Nathan Fick. I listened to the audio version and enjoyed it.

Which point of view does One Bullet Away take?

It's written from Fick's POV instead of the reporter's. Basically showing things from his position of Platoon Commander.

According to the book's author, he and the actions portrayed are real.

Simon's next show is "Treme", and it's set in New Orleans. The Treme is a neighborhood located north of the French Quarter.

I thought you meant the scene where they are in the warehouse and the platoon leader tells Nate that there are orders to not go out on night patrols.
