What do you play while you play?

So my question is...

What music do you listen to while your playing games?

I wonder how odd I am when I load up my 360HD with soundtracks and play them in place of the video games original track. I find it amusing to play the Halo (1,2 and 3) soundtracks while palying Gears of War and VisaVersa. I think I may have a sickness

I like some soundtacks mostly because they don't seem to take away from my gaming experience. The recording levels usually are around the same volume. And I don't get caught up singing while I am trying to search out my prey.

Secondly...

What is your favorite video game soundtrack? (this may be on another thread vut I didn't see one)

My Eve sessions have their own iTunes playlist, called 'Space Rock', made up of Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul, Can and Hawkwind. No other substances are required

It's a bit trite, but I'm a sucker for the Zelda: Ocarina of Time soundtrack. Integrating music in to the gameplay, and ditching the overused original Zelda theme, were both brilliant decisions, and there's such a variety of different styles of music. The minimalist Forest Temple theme is definitely not the kind of thing you'd expect in a game, but it's just a beautiful piece of music. The Wind Waker is also a favourite, but for different reasons. It's loaded with references to earlier titles, Ocarina in particular of course, but further back as well.

Rez also gets props for building a great game around great music -- playing world 5 for the first time, and then later finishing it for the first time, is something I'll never forget, and I'm sure it's the music more than anything else that makes it feel so... I'm not quite sure how to describe it. Epic? Profound? Something like that.

Regarding the primary question, I don't think I've ever really used the custom soundtrack feature I'm not easily annoyed by even fairly annoying in-game 'tunes, so I've never really felt the need to replace them.

Lots of Guilty Gear (especially the Sound Alive album), and sometimes Metal Gear Solid or Smash Bros. Brawl. Also, I once listened to a techno remix of a bunch of stuff from Portal over and over and over and over as I played Ikaruga. Mostly because I wanted to annoy my room mate at the time. He had a habit of listening to the same song over and over, except he listens to terrible music.

The Adventures of Lolo on NES only has one song that plays on an endless loop through the entire game. When it came out on Virtual Console, I immediately bought it and began playing it. I played it all the way to the end. Every five levels, I turned the volume up just a little bit, so by the time I was at the end of the game is was blaring. He didn't talk to me or come out of his room for a week after that. Then, when Lolo 2 showed up on Virtual Console, he immediately ran into his room, closed the door and turned his music up.

I also listen to a bunch of metal and Weird Al and the Team America soundtrack and now Dr. Horrible. Really, just anything that catches my attention. Often times, I put it all on in a random loop. It's kind of funny how this can affect me in the game. Killing stuff in Ninja Gaiden 2 is easy when it's Dethklok or even Tenacious D, but when it switches to that creepy lullaby from Silent Hill 4, it throws me way off.

Depends on the game but I have a huge directory of random music from all sorts of genres that keeps in at pace with games in which I don't care about sound.
However if I am playing my staple Project Reality then no music at all is my formula since I have to hear everything going on to be effective in the game.

About the only genre that I apply custom soundtracks to is Racing. It's the only game type where I feel music is not an integral piece of the puzzle completing the overall gestalt of the game's presentation and delivery.

I enjoy fast-paced, pumping tunes for racers so I lean heavily toward electronic music with a focus on the Drum & Bass sub-genre. I find that DJ artists such as Roni Size, AK1200, DB, Pendulum, etc. fit the bill quite nicely for intense, on the edge of your seat racing action.

During my RTS gaming sessions, its usually the latest GWJ podcast. During other games, I generally stick with in-game music. Any other time its just iTunes on random.

Does anyone have iTunes on a PC that they play through their 360 (especially iTunes playlists)? How do you do it?

I'm more likely to play games with all of the sound turned off than I am to play them with different music.

Most of the time I just go with the in-game music, especially when there is text or speech. for XBLA titles I'll ussually listen to podcasts, except for rez because I find the sound for that to be such an integral part of the experience.

I just plug in my iPod, which has plenty of videogame music on it, but also just my accumulated library. Which means I get plenty of inappropriate and odd juxtapositions. Bach and Gears go together quite well, actually.

I'll often throw on the Ghostbusters soundtrack when squaring off against the undead.
