Anyone Watching AMC's MAD MEN?

Tried to find a thread, but no luck. Sorry if this is cough-worthy.

So... MAD MAN. Last year's hot new show, from one of the writers of THE SOPRANOS, about the life and loves of a group of advertising men (and their families) circa 1960. I missed all of the hype when it was actually airing. Saw the cool zippo-style DVD box, and put the series on my mental "some day" checklist.

Thanks to the season two premier, though, AMC put all 13 episodes "on demand" last weekend, and I got a chance for a little marathon. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Not sure if I love it yet, but I'm definitely "in like," and it's now a part of my weekly TV queue.

Anyone else want to chime in?

Started watching it this week. Love the in your face differences in life from that era compared to now. eg. EVERYONE smokes and not only do they smoke they chain smoke. 4 shows in not sure how much I love it. It has an edge but definitely not that Showtime or HBO edge you know the writing could be pushing.

At the very least feels like a very accurate description of what society/life was like back then which is interesting enough to make it watchable.

I love it. There really was no hype when it first aired. I was on vacation and was channel surfing when I stumbled across it. It has a great vibe - melancholy, deliberate, and funny in a really off kinda way.

I really got hooked when they rebroadcast the 1st season a few months back. The 2nd season is starting off really good so far. The kid who played Angel's son is really oily and creepy.

I've been a big fan since the beginning. I love the blatant political incorrectness in nearly every scene.
I'm also one of those weird people who enjoy wearing a suit to work.

I haven't yet seen the season 2 premier yet. Looking forward to the re-run.

You know, I actually thought they got a little too "cutesy" with this in some of the earlier episodes-- "ooh, look how dumb people used to be!" (esp. with the scene where Don & Betty's daughter is playing in a dry cleaning bag), but they sort of toned it down in later episodes. That said, it made me feel nostalgic for my 1970s childhood, where kids didn't have to be strapped in car seats or watched every second of the day. Sure, we lost a few, but it was worth it

Still, as for whether this is an "accurate historical document" or not, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know... it seems hard to believe that people were really so misogynistic as they are presented here, but I suppose the point is to make it FEEL authentic to modern audiences... not to actually BE 100% authentic.

In any case, this is another show where there isn't really anyone who isn't morally corrupt in some way... it's hard to find a hero to "root" for, although I suppose we naturally take Don's side since he's the protagonist. I guess Peggy is the closest thing to a "good" character, although they even clouded that up with the finale last season.

Many of Betty's scenes are really surreal to me... the weird kid next door, the gun & pigeons, etc. I keep waiting for her to self destruct one of these weeks.

And Pete... that guy needs a spike in the head.

Best show on TV right now. Growing up in a 'feminized' society, I never really understood how bad it was for women in the workplace back in the 50's/60's. The POV from Peggy early on where every male eye was sizing her up as a fresh piece of meat was brilliant. It's great how they illustrate the real societal problems we had back then indirectly without hitting you over the head with a morality hammer.

I'm actually somewhat ambivalent about Pete. Originally I had the kneejerk reaction against him that I'm sure the writers were aiming for, but I think his character has the most potential for positive development.

I haven't watched the show, but I find it ironic based on your description here that every TV advertisement I've seen for the show includes a heavy dose of hot women in underwear and sex in the workplace. I'm assuming there's a lot more to the show than the ads portray, but it's funny they decided to play up that angle so strongly in the ad campaign.

Watched the first season on DVD not too long ago. I suppose I'll watch the second season now as it airs, but I'm wondering whether the slow pace is going to frustrate me now that I'm only getting it in weekly installments. I know it did when I watched The Wire as it aired.

I've really enjoyed the show, but it feels a little off, somehow. I think it has to do the "cutesyness" of it that SommerMatt was talking about. I can't quite help but think how our grandkids will look back at our time. I'm sure they'll have plenty of things to poke fun at, but I wonder, like I do with the show, whether the things they'll parody will be the legitimately absurd things we do, or if they'll just fall back on easy stereotypes.

Well, that's the angle the show takes-- that in this world of the 1960s, most women were objects. Housewives are "like children" and full of petty concerns, women in the office are playthings for the executives, etc. To be fair, one of the best/nicest/most moral characters on the show is a woman who starts as a secretary and begins to climb the ladder at the ad agency... and the main character's wife is obviously being smothered under the "housewife" expectations.

It makes for kind of a tightrope walk, since one could argue that the show is misogynistic but hides behind the setting in order to have an excuse for said misogyny. I can imagine that a lot of women might be turned off by this show, but I suppose I'll leave that for an actual woman to confirm or deny.

Anyone Watching AMC's MAD MEN?

I am, and I don't feel comfortable shoving spoilers into the general 2009 fall lineup thread. Soooo, yeah I'm gonna spoil lots of stuff because I heart this show so hard.

Season 3 is pretty epic, but I must admit to being less than impressed with Don's new conquest. The semi-actualized-but-still-starry-eyed teacher just seems too much of an attempt to capture the strength of Bobbie barrett (wife of Jimmy Barrett, the Utz comedian guy) and Joy, the crazy hippie from California.

And who is stoked to see the fallout from what Betty found in the locked drawer?

I got caught up on the end of Season 2 so I could get psyched about Season 3, but then I quickly forgot to keep up with Season 3. I think this show is better for a DVD bender than regular weekly watching. I really have to be in the right mood for the wave of depression this show generates. But when I am in that mood, it's awesome.

Slate does a great write up on this show every week.

It's a discussion between three writers on the show, pointing out interesting bits/parrallels from the episodes. Good stuff.

NFS, Dude.

I bet my neighbors hate it when I watch this show because I can't help but yell at Betty all the time for being such a huge bitch.

Also, the teacher is super hot. I'm really looking forward to the episode when JFK gets assassinated. That's coming up soon.

Funny thing is, I've actually completely cooled on this show since posting the original article.

Season one was great, season two was... random as hell. And season three didn't do much for me to the point where I haven't seen the last 3-4 eps. Sigh. I wish I wasn't such a hard critic on nearly everything I consume for entertainment.

I am re-watching much of seasons 1 and 2. This show is not something you can passively watch and get much out of. It is quite intricately written. I feel I did myself a disservice watching much of 1 and 2 distracted. I would say the same of House and The Mentalist, you need to be paying attention to get much out of it.

No. No one is watching this show.

I quite like it, although the latest season's frequent Betty-breaks wore on me. Although Don is perhaps the worst person on the show, he occasionally spends time being smart/interesting in between doing terrible things to the entire female cast. Betty, on the other hand, basically only has "I'm a bad person" scenes. And since she is now so far removed from the central plot threads, it feels like her presence has become rather superfluous; although it is sometimes good to have characters you love to hate, you should generally make them integral to the plot.

Oh god, yes. There are epic moments sprinkled throughout the season, and the slower moments become better as you get to know the characters more.

No, just pointing out that when it was originally posted, it was still fairly new and there wasn't a GWJ thread about the show. Has a bit of a different feel to it than someone in 2011 running in and saying "Wow, has anybody seen this show that's been on for four seasons!?!?"
