The Great "Whatever Floats Your Boat" Music thread
After the Min-Nineties grunge and pop, the best new rock of our current decade, and all the punk that anyone could ever even remember existing, I'm opening the floor.
Yesterday I got Gnarls Barkley's new album Odd Couple. Before that Kala by M.I.A. Before that the official Bioshock Licensed Soundtrack. Before that The Inevitable by The Squirrel Nut Zippers (in an ongoing attempt to collect their entire catalog).
There's just no rhyme or reason to it anymore. Mass Hysteria. Cats and Dogs.
The genre days are over for me, for now, but the hunger lingers still.
So, I'm going to try something else. If you all are still up for it, I want you to try to narrow down three groups per person to suggest.
It doesn't have to be your favorite music. It doesn't have to be critically acclaimed music. It just has to be three groups that, for whatever reason, you feel compelled to suggest to a man looking for good sound. I got two bands from the other threads that I now love that weren't even what I was looking for in the first place. So, I think this will be more constructive for everybody.
I do ask that it is actually music, not so experimental as to be categorized as an act of domestic terrorism (see: My Morning Jacket). Repeats from the previous threads are fine, and if you want to suggest a particular album from the group that's even better.
So have at it. Whatever you like. No judgement. Just a group of people coming together to passive aggressively mock one another about their interpretations of man's greatest invention.
Ze List! (minus groups I already have)
A.F.I. - Decemberundergound
Steel Pole Bathtub - Tulip
Life After Life - Just Trip
Red Giant - Devil Child Blues
Bloc Party
The Specials
Madness
The Avett Brothers
The Redwalls
Cut Copy
Citizen King - Mobile Estates
Bonepony - Stomp Revival
Lemon Demon: Damn Skippy
Montgomery Gentry: Tattoos and Scars
The Village Stompers: Washington Squared
Girl Talk - Night Ripper
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Rufus Wainwright - Want One and Two
Stars - Heart
Panic at the Disco -- Pretty. Odd.
Anberlin -- Cities
Death Cab for Cutie -- Narrow Stairs
Gina X Performance: Nice Mover
Fad Gadget: Back to Nature
Cramps: Bad music for Bad People
Mr. Bungle - California
David Torn - What Means Solid, Traveler
Mark Knopfler - Kill to Get Crimson

Gorillaz - Gorillaz (Their newest album is great too, but their first is the better of the two.)
Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah! (I don't have their first album, but their second is phenomenal. This is what disco would be if it were still alive.)
A.F.I. - Decemberundergound (These guys are just great. They are the only band that I am consistently checking their tour schedule hoping they'll make a stop nearby)
Do not disturb the Witch. Do not approach the Witch. Do not fire at the Witch. Do not point your flashlight at the Witch. Do not even look at the Witch, even with your flashlight off, even from a distance, ever.
I'll look up the rest of the album.
Letters to the Internet
Muse - Black Holes & Revelations
All American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret (I don't know why but I really like this album)
Billy Joel - Greatest Hits (I grew up listening to this man. I love how his music evolves. Piano Man is still one of my favorite songs ever, but who can forget We Didn't Start the Fire, a fine summary of major events from WWII to the (then) current day)
And I love the second side of Changes by David Bowie

SPBT is one of my fav bands and has been for a while. The other 2 I picked up on emusic and just enjoy them a lot.
Science ain't an exact science with these clowns but, they're getting better.
I've got Grenn covered on all those albums (there you got me to admit I like All American Rejects in public).
I haven't heard of Creepy's albums, so I'll start sampling.

A.F.I. used to have an entirely different sound. I suggest you listen to their older work, just for the shock value.
Elysium: The democratization of the web ... has installed an illusion of a digital first amendment that protects speech no matter how poorly spelled or stupid.
XBL: E Munnie

Bloc Party
And, in the "What the hell, it's Friday file":
The Specials
Madness
That is all.....since we're limited to three.
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.
The Avett Brothers
Folk rockers from North Carolina. Check out the album Emotionalism. I'm going to see them live for the first time this weekend. It should be awesome from what I'm told.
The Redwalls
Tribute to Brit Rock... by Americans... Check out their latest self-titled album. Lots of rich sounding ready for radio hits in that album.
Cut Copy
Check out In Ghost Colours for some catchy 80s style dance/rock music. I've listened to this album way too many times. Perfect for summer.

I said three because after the response from the other threads, if I had said as many as you could think of, I would have been crushed under the weight.

Holy crap! I just listened to that "Message to you Rudy" link you had for The Specials. I have a song which is a DJ mash up of I like it Raw by ODB and, up until this point, some random song. And this is the other song. I've been listening to that mash up for over a year and a half and never was able to find the second song. My mind is blown.
Letters to the Internet
Hey, I understand. A man can only take so much awesome at one time.
Glad to have helped you out on that mashup.

As someone with a hard drive full of musical chaos that is almost exclusively played on random, I find your three item limit arbitrary and offensive!
Since you already took the Zippers out of the equation ... three things I never tire of that many folks are unaware exists:
Citizen King - Mobile Estates This one I can't explain, but the songs are frequently on my iPod.
Southern Culture on the Skids - All of them. Dirt Track Date is where most get their start. Redneck surf rock. What's not to love? Latest album streamable from their web page.
Bonepony - Stomp Revival. My favorite of theirs. They changed after this one (lineup change).
I'm also a fan of Eels, but E becomes annoying in too large of doses.

Lemon Demon: Damn Skippy. This is probably LD's best album so far, though Dinosaurchestra does have "Ultimate Showdown" on it. It comes with bonus tracks in MP3 form if you buy the physical disc.
Montgomery Gentry: Tattoos and Scars. I've liked individual songs from other albums by them better, but this one was the first album I ever listened to where I liked every single song. Usually you get one or two throwaways that you skip when they come up on the CD, but not this one.
The Village Stompers: Washington Squared. What can I say, I'm a sucker for dixieland.
I was going to suggest something by Charlie Daniels, but I can't pick one album from his discography. He's done so much more than "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" that it's not even funny.
L337 is not a word. BA7F is a word.

Girl Talk - Night Ripper
If you like Dangermouse's mashup work, you'll like this.
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Ethereally beautiful.
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Difficult to describe. In this album listen to Wolf Like Me and Hours first to see if you like it.
By the way, I think you'll like MIA's Arular better than her new one.

I'm going with song titles because I can't remember the albums name with out llooking at the covers.
Gina X Performance: Nice Mover
Fad Gadget: Back to Nature
Cramps: Bad music for Bad People (ok, that is the album name)

The Saint Soundtrack lived in my stereo for a very long time after that movie came out.
Oil 1 is still a personal favorite.

baggachipz: Who cares about Japan, let them have their silly pointless dog games and countless re-hashes of anime-based dragon princess super lucky crapitty crap.
The Decemberists - Okay, I mentioned them previously but I love the band so much I have to bring them up again. If you haven't listened to Picaresque, you should.
Quien es Boom! - Despite that spurious and flagrant exclamation point, I like 'em.
Broken Social Scene - Just because they haven't been mentioned yet in the thread. They're completely awesome and full of energy.
I'm like a flashing lightning and a rolling thunder, I'm like a stepping razor
Mostly I listen to electronic stuff: trance, techno, IDM, deep house...but that does not mean I do stay current on other stuff. Take a listen to The Hold Steady, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and Aesop Rock.
I've already mentioned most of my favourites in the previous threads, but here's some more of the good stuff:
Daedelus - Love To Make Music By
He dresses like a Victorian dandy and plays a monome, which has to be good. An example of him doing his stuff.
Youngblood Brass Band - Center.Level.Roar
Genre defined as 'riot jazz'. Basically a nine-piece (approximately) brass band playing hip-hop.
Justice - Cross
They're ripping off Daft Punk, but they're doing a good job of it.
Pistols for two and coffee for one.
Gamertag
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys - Friday at Last
Jess Klein - Live at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction
Kathleen Edwards - Asking for Flowers
Xbox Live Gamercard - bennard
Beer For Ben
Cutting it down to three hurts, but here are three where I think it's good music people may have never heard of:
Belly - Star
I think this is one of those groups that got pigeonholed because of one or two hits. The rest of their stuff is great, but never listened to.
Richard Cheese - Tuxicity
At some point, everyone should at least give Richard Cheese a listen.
Boa - The Race of a Thousand Camels
To be honest, I think this falls short of great music, but most people who hear it like it, and most non-Anime watchers have never heard of them.

Kid Koala - Some of my Best Friends Are DJs

Yeah, I didn't think the rest of that album was as good as Duvet, but thanks to Lain pounding it into my head, that song just triggers a great pavlovian response for me.
I'm like a flashing lightning and a rolling thunder, I'm like a stepping razor
So far I got The Specials by The Specials and In Ghost Colors by Cut Copy. I'm probably going to get something by The Redwalls and TV on the Radio was interesting enough to listen to again.
I'm still going through the suggestions.
