Office Chair Recommendations + Health Issues

Consultant

I have a horrible office chair that causes a great deal of discomfort. I'm also worried that it's contributing to a lack of sensation in the genital area. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? I need something that will protect that area from too much pressure.

I've obviously been here too long, I immediately remembered this thread.

Um, no advice on the genital thing. Good luck with that.

Castration should solve the genital problem.

Well I can't speak to your medical problems, but I can say that the Aeron is just as comfortable as it was when that other thread was going. I wouldn't be shocked if it's still just fine five years from now.

Thanks, Malor and bnpederson for taking the thread seriously. It's an -immense- problem for me and I'm worried that I'll never be able to feel things down there, so I'm trying to figure out what could be contributing to it. Thanks for the recommendations.

The whole point of the mesh is to avoid pressure points, by spreading out the load uniformly, so if that's indeed causing the problem, I bet it would help. But I make no claims about whether or not that's the problem; you'd have to see your doctor.

I went to a urologist and the quack said, "It's entirely normal." =\ Going to go to a GP and neurologist soon.

I'll recommend Aerons until the end of time, but I'm unclear about this whole medical issue. Are you sitting on yourself, or is there some sort of twisting and pinching going on? I have trouble imagining where nerve damage would come in unless you're sitting very strangely.

I'm not, but I do sit a lot and this chair doesn't have much padding. Anyway, I've read that it can result in pudendal nerve entrapment. So by sitting on this chair for such extended periods of time, I'm possibly irritating the nerves in that region.

The lack of sensation in that area is really troubling me because I cannot figure out what could be causing it. And I'm concerned that the longer it takes to figure it out, the worse it will all become. =|

Boxers or briefs? Not that you need to answer here, but maybe that's having an effect, possibly combined with the bad chair.

Boxer-briefs for the past few years. Prior to that, I always wore briefs. And yeah, I'm circumcised. The lack of sensation is confined to the glans.

There's a lot to tell, but I don't know if it would be appropriate to talk about it on here.

Take breaks. Get up and walk around. Work standing or kneeling some of the time. These are all things that I do myself.

As for your condition, I'll back you up by saying that if I sit in the wrong position (I don't know what it is exactly but it only happens infrequently) for too long (e.g. when gaming, not so much in the office) then I'll experience a temporary numbness, much like your foot or other appendage "falling asleep" complete with the "pins and needles" sensation as blood flow returns once I realize what's up and shift/stand. I've also had it happen on the motorcycle a time or two. If your issue is more permanent than I described, then you probably do need to get a second opinion, but if it's as temporary as I described, your urologist is probably right and getting a new chair (along with moving around more) should help.

Good luck.

Edit: Also, if we're talking about an employer-supplied office chair, you may be able to put a little pressure on them by getting a "prescription" for an Aeron or something similar.

Yeah, I've been doing that recently. I take at least 5 minute breaks every hour.

I don't actually feel any numbness anywhere else in that region or the "pins and needles" sensation you speak of. The glans is the only insensitive area, but the sensations tend to fluctuate, even in a single day.

I'm 22-years-old and relatively healthy. I don't drink, smoke, or take any medication. I've only sustained one injury in that area, but it occurred when I was a child and healed rather quickly, I believe. The only problems I do have are urinary frequency and nocturia, which also fluctuate quite a lot. Very rarely (rarely more than once a week, if that, and always very temporary), I'll experience dull pains in the urogenital area. The urologist diagnosed me with prostadynia, but the diagnosis seems to be a catch-all rather then an absolute cause.

By posting on here, I was kind of hoping to find someone with similar problems. =|

I would like to add that I have no erectile problems at all and I can achieve ejaculation with ease.

If you're not going to post anything constructive, then stay away from the thread. This is a very troubling condition for me that has really tested my patience. It's not amusing to me at all; in fact, it's downright infuriating. So show some tact and avoid the thread if you're going to be sardonic.

I think you might be better looking for help at a medical forum of some sort. I'm not really comfortable with all this talk of genital issues, you're running pretty hard against the grain here.

Best of luck with it.
