Rush on Colbert Rep. last night. First time on American tv in over 30 years.

In the never-ending battle of "who's my favorite 70's/80's rock band", Rush and The Police are always duking it out for first place. Both hold the spot for periods before I hear a random song from the other, and a new winner is declared (for the moment).

After seeing Rush on the Colbert Report last night, they're back at number one.

Great interview, great performance (even the song has funny moments).

Oh man, I was just on my way here to post this.

It was a great episode, and doubly so if you're a Rush fan.

Anyone else notice that Geddy had Edward Teach's flag on his shirt?

Lifeson's actually trimmed down his rig quite a bit since the 80's.

So, in the battle for your favorite band, it's between the awesomely rocktastic Rush, and... The Police? The single-worst musical atrocity this side of the Holocaust! Seriously? That's like saying, "I don't know what I want to eat today. It's either this delicious turkey dinner or a bag of hot barf. Ooh, tough decision."

What can I say? I likes me them talented percussionists.

BTW, be careful not confuse the modern-day, smooth-jazz/elevator music Sting with the bad-ass jumping-around-on-stage-like-a-maniac bassist/singer from The Police. They're like two different people.

Geddy Lee may actually be the greatest rock bassist who ever lived.

You know when playing a Rush song on Rock Band to not fall into the "bass is easy" trap so common to other, more pedestrian songs. Those others will lull you into a false sense of security and then Geddy Lee will come along and bitch slap you into the year 2112. Drums too.

He's definitely up there.

There's this single minute of music in Freewill that showcases the guys simply firing on all cylinders in a godly fashion (Lee really shines here). When people ask me why I like Rush I tell them to listen to the song from the 3 minute mark to the 4 minute mark for a quick explanation.

All that being said, I still think Les Claypool (Primus) is a better bassist, but are they even considered rock?

I'd call him the best rock bassline writer who ever lived. I remember in high school, the bridge bassline to Tom Sawyer was like the pinnacle of bass playing... if you could do that, you could do anything. From an older vantage point, it's not that hard to play, but the line is so sick. And I still get a charge when they kick into the bridge of Freewill. Walking back to my desk at work yesterday, 'Xanadu' was streaming on someone's iTunes station, and I stood there for a good five minutes soaking it in. I don't even listen to them anymore, but that sh*t is fundamental... like reading.

I'd put Chris Squire up there as well. Prog rock is heaven for bassists.

There are plenty of better bassists out there from a technical standpoint. To me, what makes Geddy awesome is:

a) He is a trailblazer for rock bass. He showed a generation of players that you didn't have to be a frustrated guitarist to play bass, and you didn't have to limit yourself to doubling the rhythm guitars an octave down. You could kick ass right up there with the lead guitarist and still hold down your half of the rhythm section. Your tone could be just as mean and command as much attention as a guitarist playing through a wall of Marshalls. Without Geddy, we'd have no Les Claypool, no Doug Pinnick, no Billy Sheehan, no John Myung, and a host of other players.

b) He did all that on the bass as a frontman. He plays that stuff and sings at the same time, not to mention the keyboards and bass pedals.

All that and he's playing Nissan Pavillion this weekend. Sadly, the wife has me booked with other stuff.
