I need to talk about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Ok first off I searched for a S.T.A.L.K.E.R catch all thread and there was nothing for the first 12 pages so I thought I would create a new post as I am finally playing through this game. I absolutely love it....for me this game is Fallout 3 before Fallout 3. I have to rank it right up there next to the Half-Life series as one of my favorite shooters of all time. This game for me personally has better atmosphere than even Bioshock had....and that's saying a lot. I'm not saying it's a better more polished game than Bioshock I'm just saying as far as atmosphere this game is pulling me in so well. Also this game has scared the living crap out of me so many times. It's genuinely scary in that when I get to an underground section I sometimes put them off for an extra 20 mins to a half hour just so I can psyche myself up to actually go down in the bunkers and take care of business. I haven't finished the game yet I am just heading up near the Red Forest so I'm not sure how much of the game is left but so far this thing is amazing. It's actually great that I am playing this now because Clear Sky is out in like a month. Is there anyone else out there that loves this game as much as me? Also have there been any games for people out there where despite all their flaws you simply can't stop playing because the game is so much fun? The last game I had this with was The Witcher. Sorry if this post is disjointed and all over the place.....I just shut Stalker down for the night and it's almost 4 a.m. I would love to hear what other people have thought of the game......also kind of makes me excited for that other Russian shooter Cryostasis.

Stalker, FarCry, Boiling Point to name a few that i can remember.
The one thing i think that Stalker needed was more content. Once you'd cleared an area by going through the storyline there wasn't much left there. Sure, bandits re-spawned but the side missions were pretty poorly handled... despite all this i still loved the game.
Still waiting for a cross between Stalker/Boiling Point (go anywhere - even inside) with the content of a game like Thief. Perhaps Fallout 3 will be along this path... the devs are talking it up as such.
A blog: by me!
I REALLY need to get back to Stalker at some point. Got as far as the first underground area then got distracted by other things and never went back to it. Plus my PC should now run it with everything turned up full...think I'll jump that to the top of my "to play" pile.
There's two new games by the people that made boiling point (White Gold and another sci-fi one which I can't remember the name of) that will be out soon. They're promising these will be much less buggy that Boiling Point..but no less crazy (I believe "riding sharks" is a promised feature
).
I keep trying to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (man, that's a pain to type), but the first firefight always ends disastrously. I mean, my character can't shoot the side of a...of a...of a thing with really big sides. WAY bigger than a barn. I know I'll love the game if I can ever get into it, but the beginning is harsh.
Also, I loved Thief 3. - I'm sorry, Thief: Deadly Shadows. *scoffs*
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. - Albert Einstein
I had a lot of trouble with the very first firefight too, until I discovered something that makes it a lot easier.
Go to the guy that gives you your very first mission. (Not the trader, the guy in the stalker camp outside.) There is a ladder behind him that leads to the attic of the house he is standing next to. Climb the ladder but don't go into the attic. Instead, make your way around the edge of the roof to the opposite end of the house. You should see another house more or less identical to the one you are standing on.
Make a running jump onto the roof of the second house then make your way across the roof to the opposite end. Down near the edge of the roof on the far end there is an opening. If you stand on the very edge of the roof and crouch you can see inside. You should see a crate that is just out of reach.
Shoot the crate with your pistol. The crate contains a set of STALKER armor, which is very good at the start of the game. You should just be able to reach the armor and pick it up. (Sometimes the armor drops out of reach so you should probably make a save right before shooting the crate.) The armor makes the first few missions much easier.

STALKER made me crap my pants several times. It is the most frightening game I've ever played... but sometimes I wanted to kick it in the nuts for boneheaded design decisions. For instance the "Don't just stand there, Stalker, come in!" guy "And I have some information that might be useful to you" guy made me loathe going to the Bar. Addressing those things are what people mean when they talk about "polish".
That's where I quit, too. I liked it a lot, but I'm still looking for a mod to tune difficulty and AI. One that doesn't go overboard, just makes it easier for me to not die without resorting to cheap tactics. I'll probably start playing again once Clear Sky comes out and by the time I finish, they'll have patched the new game to a playable state.

I just got this game in the past week in anticipation of the next game and there are some things that I really like about it and some that I'm not so sure about. The biggest thing that irks me is that I can't hit a target 50 yards away with my crosshair directly on them and in the lower crouch while not moving. I understand it from a certain point of view that they don't want me trying to take guys out from ridiculously far away but it still bothers me, but 50 yards away while crouched x2 isn't that difficult to imagine, especially when the army guys are killing me in like 5 seconds from that distance.
I would praise it for its atmosphere that it creates, but not necessarily the way it tells the story, at least not as highly as Half-Life or Bioshock (at least before the 'first' ending).

There were a lot of things I liked about it but it seemed determined to ruin its own atmosphere. I'd find that abandoned facility a lot spookier without 50 soldiers and a HIND buzzing around.

I just wished the game had a sort of "leveling" element

This is not your replacement Fallout 3. This game is great on its own and something completely separate.
Although some parts of the graphics look crappy, some parts look so well done and different that it makes it awesome.
All I have to say, is as a PC gamer, I LOVE THE EASTERN EUROPEANS!

Precursors is the sci-fi game by that team.
I recently heard that they made Boiling Point with a team of just 13 people. All I can is that those guy must have balls the size of cantaloupes to have taken on a concept that ambitious with a team that small. On one hand, no wonder it was riddled with bugs, but on the other hand, it's amazing that it came out as well as it did. They're a much larger operation now, so I have high hopes for White Gold and Precursors.

As for STALKER, I love it but I keep getting distracted. I've been playing it on and off since it released, and I finally made it to the bar a couple of months ago. I might finish the game by Christmas at this rate.

Ya like I said before I'm not saying the game is better than Half-Life or Bioshock but I put it right up there beside them because of atmosphere and the way the game just pulls you into the universe. I know the game has problems like the constant dialogue being spewed from the people at the bar or even when you complete a mission and all you need to do is collect the reward you can still fail if you don't come back within the time limit they set.....which is fairly long but still. Also the beginning of the game is REALLY harsh but for some reason I just didn't care.....and I died a lot. But it was that atmosphere and subject matter that kept pulling me in, to the point where I actually liked that I had to approach each fight like it could be my last....I would actually think about how to tackle a situation instead of just running wildly into a building. I would look for back entrances or scout out the location with my binoculars to find out what I was up against. The game pulls you into this world and makes you feel like you are scrounging off of people for ammo and food/health, so that when you actually do get to a settlement it's like an oasis or a godsend like I can actually talk to people and buy and sell things. It's the same way I felt about The Witcher, that game had a lot of problems but the story and the consequence system was frickin astounding! One last point is the game has gotten me really interested in the subject matter of Chernobyl and the area around it in general. So if anyone knows any great books about the reactor incident or just the aftermath and surrounding area let me know. Cheers guys I'm going to play some more STALKER!!
Well, i bought 'Roadside Picnic' which is the book that Stalker is based off. It's quite thin but a thoroughly enjoyable read. Great sci-fi considering when it was written.

There's also a film "Stalker" based on the book by Andrei Tarkovsky which also served as inspiration for the game. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/ Must get round to tracking it down at some point.
The only need I derived from STALKER was ... a need to bleed.
I barely got past the first major firefight also, another casualty of the dead zone....

Check out these Russian guys who play at Stalker, in the actual Chernobyl hotzone, with airsoft guns.
Also, you can download Roadside Picnic and other Strugatsky books for free.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that playing Airsoft in the hotzone, while conceptually cool, is also a really bad idea.

Agreed, thanks for the book/movie links to guys
It's a pretty bad idea, but they'll live. The outer area has cooled down a lot by now. It can't kill them instantly and probably won't give them cancer unless they eat the grass or something dumb like that.
I don't know if they're actually there or in some other location that looks like Chernobyl. If it's fake, then they're perfectly safe. But they still shouldn't eat the grass.

That's not entirely true, Nyles. You can go most places in the hotzone without protective gear, yes, but there are hotspots all over the place where radiation has collected. No indication it's there (throwing a bolt at it doesn't help) but if you stand in it long enough it will kill you surprisingly quickly. They also say you should never take more than one vehicle into the hotzone because the dust in the roads is radioactive enough to be hazardous as well.
So while not suicidal it certainly is taking more of a risk than I'd consider reasonable in order to play a game.

Really, the dust is still radioactive? I thought that dissipated in weeks or months. Not the dirt, of course, just the dust. Hm.
I just meant that it's a health risk rather than a sudden death risk. They're definitely crazy if they walk around there without Geiger counters and don't rinse off afterwards.

I just picked it up for $12 on sale brand new today! I played the demo way back and really dug it, but the performance was kinda all over the place on my machine so I let it slide. Hopefully there's been a couple patches, I'm about to go give it a whirl.
PS - Anyone in Canada can order it from NCIX.com over the next week for $12 depending on how much stock they have left, but the weekly sale just started yesterday.

To go back to the game, I always found it incredibly eerie when my counter started clicking quickly. The Geiger counter in Half-Life sounds exactly the same but it never made me tense at all. I think it's because you can see big puddles of toxic waste in Half-Life, but in Stalker it feels invisible and omnipresent. There are a lot of creepy invisible things in Stalker.

I recommend getting Float32 and the Weather Overhauled mods. They don't change the core game, just make it A) faster and B) a hell of a lot sexier.

Sweet.. thanks for the tip Azure. Just got it loaded up and I'm playing around with some options. The fully lighting is just too sexy to turn off, but it's hitting the system hard.

I second this recommendation. Float32 not only makes the game look much better, but also run much smoother. And in a real way, not in the crappy "I oversaturated the colors and the HDR" type of graphical mods that people sometimes go nuts over. It's exciting knowing that the same team is working on a similar mod for Crysis too.
