Non-Game iPhone Apps Catch-All

Seemed like we needed one of these. Let me start by saying:

Remote: insanely great.

VNC Light: better than the desktop client, honestly. Essentially perfect, and I can imagine if you needed it, the full version with macros would be a life saver.

Sketches/Band: both occupying antsy children for years to come.

Guitar Toolkit: complete chord chart plus awesome tuner that's always with you. What's not to love?

Twittelator: way better than the other twitter clients.

WeatherBug: Way better (and faster!) than the default weather client.

I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded Remote and still can't get it to work. I launch the app, click on my device in iTunes, and there's no prompt for me to enter the 4 digit code. I checked the options to make sure everything was correct as well. Any ideas? There doesn't seem to be much support for it yet.

Facebook: Decent, but seems a little cludgier than the mobile Facebook client accessible through Safari. I had some weird issues seeing my friend's picture albums.

iPint: Get this immediately. Turns your iPhone into a virtual beer mug, filled with the tasty golden liquid. When you tilt it, the glass empties. It makes me crave beer intensely!

Swat~ Connect your iPhone to your PC, make sure iTunes is running, then open the Remote app on your phone. A new device will appear in iTunes after a moment named "iPhone". Click on that device and you can enter the code there.

I have a Touch, so by far the best app for me is Instapaper. You can save any webpage on your computer, and you can access them through the Instapaper app while offline. The cool thing is that you can the original web page, or a mobile version.

If I were a bad demoman, I wouldn't be sitting here dicussing it with you, now would I?

What kind of ebook reader apps have been made available?

I saw one called STANZA, but are their any others? Do these allow you to create/import books, or do they require proprietary downloads?

EDIT:

Great, the required desktop software is OS X only. Fail.

Yeah in theory the new device should appear right I've tried a bunch of different things but can't get it to pop. It says iTouch is supported, maybe only iPhones work?

First app I'm getting when I get my iPhone? Pandora, no question.

The Remote app is life changing.

Edit: you might need that "Bonjour" networking stuff to make it work right.

Yes, you need all the bounjour ports and whatnot open on the target machine, and yes, it's insanely great.

I double checked to see Bonjour was running, checked in services.msc and restarted/started it again, etc. Looks like I'm not the only one with the issue though. Some are saying it might have to do with uPnP. I know I've had issues streaming via Tversity and WMP11 using my Laptop running Media Center as well. Been through the firewall and router a bunch of times too with no luck.

Tversity streams fine from my other XP machine. I figured I'd give it a shot and install iTunes on that one, but low and behold, iTunes won't even launch after I freshly installed it, even with a reboot. The process just hangs there with zero activity. It's just not my lucky Apple day!

You might also check to make sure that iTunes is configured to look for remotes in the Advanced Options. It should pop up over in the left window. I was able to get it up and running under both XP and Vista, though I'm not running much in the way of super-duper encryption.

Is there a good "Enter url" streaming Audio app out yet? I have Pandora and Last.fm, but I'd like to basically open iTunes "Radio" while I'm on the net. I also need to find a mic so some of these iPhone apps (Shazam, Guitar Tuner) work. So far it looks like even if I build my own or buy one it's not 2.0 software compatible. Anyone heard anything in that dept. ?

Ereader Pro is available free. All of the books I purchased for my Treo even showed up on the 'bookshelf'. Functionality is basic, but they are promising more in version 1.1 before the end of July.

Shazam is really cool, it identifies music using the microphone. In my (limited) testing it has worked extremely well.

The "Tuner" app will open audio streams via URL.

It works pretty well but chews the battery.

Never used that before... from the looks of things, though, it seems to only use its own proprietary format.

I used to use something called uBook for my pocketpc, and I thought it was great. It would read zipped HTML, text, rtf... and best of all, there was automatic page scrolling (something that is essential, in my opinion, when dealing with the small screen space of a handheld device). I have yet to find a "commercial" book reader that even touches uBook for functionality.

Right now, I'm using Mobipocket reader on my Blackberry Curve... which seems to be the only ebook reader available for Blackberry. It's OK, and at least I can build my own books with the creator software. But still... my quest for the perfect ebook reader goes on.

Thanks for the tip, I installed it on my Touch and my N95, I was looking for a great chat solution and this looks to be it.

is this a free client? I have 4-5 separate IM programs on my blackberry, so an "all-in-one" solution would be nice... I'm just sure as hell not going to pay for one.

The comments arent very positive about this one. They say the client is very buggy (even locking one iPhone completely until the user managed to remove the app) and generally un-useful (as is AIM at the moment)

It locked up on me while taking a picture. I've used the app on windows mobile and it's excellent. Sadly the limitations are that of the SDK, not the app.

That you have to sign into the Palringo account before connecting to anything else worries me.

It's just like Digsby where all your settings can be used on any platform. If I sign into palringo from my iphone, then go to windows mobile all i have to do is just sign in. No need to transfer settings.

I'm digging Palringo on both devices, it's the best Gmail chat client I've used yet on them. I was snapping pictures on my N95 and sending them very quickly and instantly to my friends. Slick!

BeatMaker is an incredibly cool musicmaking program. For an iPhone app it's remarkably sophisticated - sort of like a stripped-down, mobile version of Reason. It's $20 and, amazingly, worth every penny if you're looking for a surprisingly flexible hardware beatbox/software sequencer kinda thing for your iphone.

Beatmaker is still a toy, but just barely. It's gorgeous to look at and makes excellent use of the touch screen. Hit up the product website and check out the screenshots. I've spent 3 hours with it and feel like I've just scratched the surface. It's not really kid-friendly, and it presupposes some familiarity withy sequencers, etc., but it is awesome.

Honestly, I did not know the iPhone could do such things.
