How I reviewed a TV I "bought" at Circuit City

Background:
I tried to buy a TV at Circuit Cuty for my daughter and had a horrid experience. A week later they solicited me for a review of the TV. This is what I posted:

Title: How the Hell should I know?!

Quote:
I ordered online. I went to the Manchester CT Store and they tried to give me a box that looked like it had been brought ashore with the first wave at Omaha beach. I wanted to open the box and inspect the TV and was told no. I was repeatedly told "They pack them really well". I insisted and when I opened it up the "protective styrofoam" was a dusty-pulp-like substance. I told them I wanted another TV. They told me it was the last one. I got a refund. A week later they still hadn't gotten any new ones in. I asked for my $24 gift card and was told they did not have to give me one as "technically, we had the TV, you just didn't want it". I asked them if, hypothetically, they had come out with a snow shovel, on which was a pilke of plastic and glass, that they claimed had once been a TV. Would I still be unable to get my gift card? I was told "look, sir, we don't want to argue...". I left and bought a better TV at Best Buy across the Street. Hooray for the Manchester CT CC's customer service!!!

So far the review has not posted, apparently they must revoew the reviews first. Too bad.

So you know, The $24 gift card is what you are supposed to get if you order online and your order is not ready for pickup in 24 minutes.

Hey, I'm from Manchester! And yeah, that Circuit City does suck, I've been expecting them to close down for a long time now.

Do you have any cop friends that you could convince to harass the store manager?

I never had a problem with the North Haven store. Granted it's a bit of a drive. If possible I try to not shop there at all though

The only reason I tend to prefer Circuit City over Best Buy is they tend to be more susceptible to lowering the price. Best Buy usually won't budge but I've had a lot of luck talking down the price with managers at Circuit City on various items. That being said, I avoid both if I can help it.

Circuit City? Isn't that kinda like the flea market of electronic stores?

I've always had bad service there, so I just don't go.

Best Buy may cost a little more sometimes, but at least they've never given me any problems.

Unfortunately, I've had no better experiences at Best Buy. They have been just as inept. Hooray for box stores!

When I saw "bought" in "quotes" and saw that this was a SwampYankee thread I was assuming you stole it. You let me down, Swampy.

I never go to Circuit City because they always try to rip me off and I always feel bad about ripping into the workers there because I know they don't set the policy. They're just kids with part time work. Their lives suck enough without me hassling them. Since that kind of empathy rarely works in my favor I try to stay out of the situation to begin with.

My last experience at a CC was buying my digital camera. I ordered online for store pickup and it worked great. Then I noticed that the "in-store" price was $40 more than I paid.

Between this shady pricing practice and the glory days of Divx, I've sworn them off for good.

Maybe that's why they like to haggle. Who knows?

Completely true - buying online and picking up in-store to save on shipping (that is, IF a store is close to you that has what you're looking for, now that gas is so high), is the only way I do business with Circuit City. Their in-store prices are not only higher, but they also don't give you the same financing. I found this out recently strolling through a store killing time. I looked at a Samsung plasma that I saw online for $1099 and 3 years no interest. It was $1199 and 2 years no interest in the store. I asked a salesperson about the discrepancy and they of course "had no idea why it was different." Pfft.

Only semi on topic, but I bought a new HDTV a year ago from NewEgg.com. I was very nervous about buying such a big ticket item online, but in the end NewEgg was just as great with my TV as they have been with all my other purchases. The shipping was awesome, with the shipping company calling me ahead of time to setup a delivery time and insisting that I inspected the TV before they left so that if anything was wrong they could take it back. NewEgg's TV warrenties are pretty nice too, so I'm confident that if anything every goes wrong they'll take care of me.

So, anyway, that's something to keep in mind for the future.

I often see reviews on Newegg dissing the AIT delivery service that they use for TVs and such. Is this how your TV was delivered? I'm just curious because I'd definitely consider buying from Newegg for something like this but the prospect of delivery for something like that scares me a bit.

I did the same. Had a great mental picture of Swampy, Shotgun_Phil, and Richy all decked out in unfortately sized spy gear.

Hmm, yeah, AIT was the delivery service that brought my TV. Maybe I got lucky, but their service for me was very professional.

I love NewEgg but I don't think I'd buy a TV from them just because buying a TV is almost a tactile experience. You want to see it in person before you buy. I also can't imagine what a hassle it would be to return it to NewEgg if there was a defect.

I too had a terrible, month long ordeal with them about a tv replacement. I will never, ever buy from them again(!). ( I actually got better service when I went directly to the dealer who I further logged a compaint about CC's inability to service me. They said they would take care of it!)

You know the old joke about looking at the barber's hair and finding out where *he* gets it cut? Choosing between Circuit City and Best Buy is like finding out that both of the overpriced barbers in your town look like bowl-cut victims with bandaids and spray-painted patches galore. And they are both rude about it too.

Meanwhile, NewEgg has a really sexy salon where you can sip cocktails and get a fantastic cut for ten dollars.

I have purchased electronics from Newegg and Vann's - most recently a 58" plasma from Vann's, arrived a week ago. I have never had a problem with either, even when I bought the wrong graphics card - return was painless and exchange was quick. Delivery has never been an issue either. Even though it is usually stated "curbsdie", most truckers have no problem moving it into the house. And the prices, even including shipping, are better. Just about the only thing I don't buy online these days is clothing and groceries.

I'll pay retail....if and when the service of brick and mortar stores ever improves. Frankly, I do not see how it can, given the low salaries of staff and high overhead of maintaining a retail environment.
