It's finally official. 60GB 360 is in. 20GB 360 is out.

Much like the 20GB PS3, the 20GB 360 is history. The 60GB model will take up the $350 price point while the 20GB will be cut to $299 while supplies last. The arcade's price remains unchanged. I'm thinking this is a dumb move for Microsoft. Storage on the 360 is still too expensive, given that they want Live to be a media service and not just a game service. Plus, this isn't going to help the 360's relatively flat sales, nor its sales against the PS3. I'll let Bill explain why.

Thansk for the news. Any word on a price drop for the 120GB HD?
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.
Sad. I'd assumed they were coming to their senses and would permanently drop the price of the 20GB. The crossover between people who haven't bought a 360 yet and those who care about getting an extra 40GB is minuscule.
Two and a half years after launch, and the price has only dropped 12.5%? Hope both Sony and Microsoft have learned some lessons about pricing and the public's appetite for high-end consoles for the next generation.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Sony and Microsoft's message to Nintendo -
"Please keep handing our asses to us. We love it!"
I actually understand why Sony isn't cutting the price, they're already taking a bath on the PS3. Microsoft is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The only thing the general public sees for their consoles is prettier pictures and a price point that is too high.
Still wish I had a PS3 though, but I hardly represent the general public.

There isn't one. Technically there's no price drop in the 360 line at all. The pro 20GB is just being replaced by a new pro 60GB and is remaining at the $349 price point. The 20GB is now discontinued and the $299 price is a clearance sale.
Here's an interesting thought: how many of those 20GB models are the older pre-Falcons that people in the know have been avoiding?
I dont think either one of these guys worry about Nintendo. Totally seperate markets.

So Nintendo is in the video game market and Sony and Microsoft are.... ?
My only question is whether this new machine still sounds like a leaf blower when I turn it on and let sit and run a download.

Agreed. In fact, I see Sony and Microsoft's markets as completely different as well.
For Microsoft, the more they consolidate all PC gaming on the 360 console, the more money they make from their PC platform partners, and the more control they have of the market. They are basically cannibalizing their own market.
For Sony, it's the same thing, only they have to provide a valid reason for their massive PS2 install base to care. The games are just starting to arrive, and blue-ray is starting to take, so you are seeing more sales of the PS3.
Nintendo basically owns the casual/family gaming space, and Microsoft and Sony do not have coherent strategies to compete in that arena.

No word on a drop in price on the HD's? That would be welcome for they seemed over priced to me.
I'd buy a 360 if it was $200-250. Rock Band for the family alone would be a good reason, but I really want to have DLC on Rock Band, so am shying from the Wii version. Also, the Netflix deal for the 360 is very intriguing.
But I'm not paying $300-500 for a console.
I think there's a lot more crossover of the markets than people think, and if MS came down by $100-150, I think they'd capture a whole lot of Wii-for-the-family folks that would also like a "real" console, but can't justify a month's rent for the system.

Indeed. Every now and then I feel like picking up a 120Gb drive, but then I remember I'd be paying about a dollar a Gig, and that just ain't cool in this Terabyte age.
And since I have a 20gig model, every time I think about "renting" one of MS' HD movies, I remember I'd have to clear out some of the stuff on my drive and go watch TV instead.

A months rent? Man I wish Tucson had $300 rent prices.
I don't disagree, I think people would potentially start flocking in droves to the 360 if it dropped another $100, but in all reality, Microsoft set the new rules when they launched at $400. People hated it, last-gen people payed $300 at launch for PS2 and XBox, and i'll admit that I didn't pick up a PS2 until it dropped in price. But as I said, that was before, this is now, I groaned when I picked up a 360 at $400 but accepted it so now $300 seems like a hot deal.

Right now I'm wishing I had a 60 GB drive so I could install more games on my HDD. Sigh...

I still think that if Microsoft wants to capture families, they need to offer some type of family pricing for XBOX Live. Granted, I dont want my kids on LIVE, but still if my sons were older, no way in h3ll I'd pay for multiple LIVE accounts.

I'm in the same boat. Maybe I'll pick up a new drive after my current system red rings again.

One can seemingly get 120GB HDs off of eBay for <$100. I'm abit dubious...
