Best game ever? (not favourite)
Friday, July 11th, 2008 - 7:31pm
So.. the million dollar question, what do you guys think is the best game *EVER*. Not your favourite but seriously best game ever. The more games you play the harder it is to answer this question, I know I can't. So what is it? The thread about JA2 inspired me since that is *very* close for me but still not the one.
I can only think of perfection along particular genres right now so Unreal Tournament 2K4 for FPS for me, Soul Calibur 2 or 3 for fighting games, JA2 for TBS, Star Control 2 for space opera, Starcraft for RTS, WoW for MMO... but just picking one of those over others is... just impossible ![]()

Oh geez... impossible to judge. Too many forms of perfection to debate.
I could just list the games that have earned the equivalent of perfect 10 scores from me, but otherwise this topic's simply unapproachable.
Stunts.
May as well lock the thread.

Half-Life 2.
This is as much a snap-judgement as a thought-through one, but I've never seen a game just plain do so many things right. The setting has a real identity; you can remember your time there later as if it existed. The people are not only well written and perfectly acted, they're actually likable. This should not be as rare as it is. The science fiction aspects are never over-explained, but they always feel like there's a coherent world informing them. It's one of the few games I've gone back and played again, and felt like I've gotten more out of it each time.

Yup. With a nod to Go.

Backgammon.
Novices can understand the game quickly. It's older than sin. To play at the highest levels involves an amazing amount of subtle, sometimes non-intuitive strategy-- yet, there is enough luck to make it feel fluid. Finally, it's an easy game to play AND be social.

Man, I put way too much thought into mine. I should have just said Midtown Madness 2

There is zero possibly of narrowing this down, but ... ONE of my best games ever:
Thief.
There's very little I don't love about this game (or it's sequels...hell even Thief 3 was pretty good) and in my opinion there has been no stealth game released since the Thief games which have been able to hold a candle up to them (Garret keeps shooting it with a water arrow
)
OMFG

It contains the essence of a competitive game's form and function. Simple to play, yet incredibly deep.

Assuming we are talking video games... Pirates for my Amiga 500. Unlimited replayability, great graphics and sound! No question about it!

MaxShrek .. looks like Jake.. drives like Elwood.
Chess or Mahjong, if we're just talking about games in general. I could play those until doomsday.
If you're talking video games, I'd have to say Freespace 2. Amazing story, action, graphics, presentation, interface, and so on all wrapped together into a wonderful gaming experience that, IMO, hasn't been matched.
Strip Poker! Many a college night filled with delight thanks to this wonderful game and foolish alcohol consuming girls.
If video games, I would say.. Well its a tie.. Tie Fighter or Doom.

Nice list there, Unreal Tournanment and Star Control 2 are really good games! But my vote goes for UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: Ufo Defence). I loved that game!
X-COM: UFO Defense was voted "best PC game of all time" by the staff of IGN in 2007. It also appeared as #21 on IGN's "Top 100 Games of All Time" list the same year.
X-COM appeared as #22 on Computer Gaming World's list of the best games of all time in 1996.
