OK, The App Store is live, and you can install the firmware by hand. So post your thoughts here. I'll be buying a ton of the games just to try them out. Bomberman anyone? Pinball? Enigmo?
Note a LOT of games seem to be under "entertainment" not "games."

I'd love to see Nintendo market an app that allows NES games like Tecmo Bowl or Contra to be played on the iPhone.

Saving your state on the iphone is of utmost importance. I want to be able to leave the game at any time and have the state saved.
I enjoy strategy type games like risk and uniwar. A nice axis and allies game would be awesome. One thing that is very helpful for those types of games is the ability to zoom in/out. Strategery lacks that zoom feature and it makes playing the large maps tougher. One plus with risk/axis and allies type games is that you don't have to remember what you were doing when you left the game. You can almost always figure that out with a quick look at the overall playing area.
Finally, can you make a game like this:

Nomad - that's free if you jailbreak your iPhone. Which makes me think I should.

I've really been enjoying Uniwar, but I'm starting to wish the AI were better. I'll reach a point in most games where I know I'm going to win and I just have to slog through the remaining bazillion rounds to do so. But then I'm still working through the campaign so perhaps I just haven't hit the really hard stuff yet.
As for a tactics-type RPG... if they made a version of Jagged Alliance for the iPhone I'd probably wet myself with excitement.
The longest lasting iphone games really are the ones you can play in short spurts. That instant gratification has the added advantage of exploding around the watercooler when users share their favorite games. Flight Control is a good example of that. It couldn't be a simpler game, but it's stylish and has that 'just one more try' factor.
I wouldn't bother trying a match 3 game or any kind of puzzler unless someone comes up with an -amazing- idea.
Creative word games seem to do pretty well, like Textropolis and Word Fu.
Tower defense games are getting pretty saturated, but they still get a lot of attention and I imagine the good ones still get good sales.
Lite versions are a very good thing and trying to get some early coverage on sites like TouchArcade won't hurt either.

Agreed on all points.. I'm thinking of Settlers of Catan.. just not sure if it works on the Iphone.. have to sit down with the XBLA version over the weekend and give it some thought.

I'd probably buy that, especially if it can work with the upcoming local multiplayer options the bluetooth connection is supposed to allow. I haven't tried a single true online iPhone game yet. Local multiplayer sounds like more fun to me.
That's not really a sit and play for 5-20 minutes game though
Still, the name alone would sell well.
ThePolypusher
Yeah! Local multiplayer/Online multiplayer Settlers sounds awesome!
It looks like Zooloretto is out now for your board gaming fix.

For those interested -- Flight Control is updated to v1.2 with two new airports (a beach and an aircraft carrier) and some new planes (sea planes and military jets). Oh, and there's a button to fast forward through slow parts of the game.
Nifty!!

Its a great update. Apparently their cloudcell site thing can now track users by tag which allows sort of grouped leaderboards, so we could post under GWJ and see how we match up against the rest of the folks here. I haven't really looked into it yet, but it could be fun.
ThePolypusher
Oooh, nifty, I just updated and also created an account last night. I didn't see anything mentioned about tags in Flight Control, but i just logged into cloudcell.com and added GWJ as a tag to my profile. On the site you can search by tags, but I'm not sure if you can do anything from within the app itself. pretty neat none-the-less!
oops, forgot to leave my cloudcell profile name: "jborthwick"

Anyone tried Star Defense yet? It's another tower defense game, there's a shortage on the iphone
, but it feels different enough to still be fun. It's kind of different because the playing field is a small planet, being a sphere instead of a flat surface changes things up a bit. The rest of it is pretty standard tower defense, enemies move along a path and you put up towers to kill them, nothing that you haven't seen in every other TD game. Still, it's a pretty fun game, and quite hard I thought.

Wow, nice!
So, the island beach airfield seems quite a bit easier to me than the original, while the aircraft carrier is just pure hell.
Anyone hear try Real Racing yet? This is done by the same company as Flight Control. I'm sorely tempted, even though it's $10.

I'm such a phone whore. I pre-ordered the 32 gig one today, as if I need all that room.
On a related note, my sister is excited about getting an iPhone on the 18th.

I was so depressed by the games they decided to feature at WWDC. The best upcoming games are another racing game, and yet another tower defense games? Yeah, this is totally gonna replace the PSP/DS.

The iPhone app demo portion of the keynote was excruciatingly boring. They should have limited it to 3 apps total. I'd have pretty psyched if the tower defense game they demoed was PvZ. Totally don't care about Star Defense.
I want Metal Gear Ac!d. I know you can't get the license but do something similar to that and I would love you forever.

I find myself constantly playing Fairway Solitaire on the PC and I think if you can figure out the magic of that you would have a great iPhone game. It is easy to play, quick, has pleasing graphics, and you can just minimize and do something, then go back to the game. I find that last point is also true about games I play on my iPhone. You can just look away from Peggle because nothing will happen if you do.
Good luck and be sure to post when it is out so we can all enjoy.
Just picked up an awesome game called I Dig It. It's currently $.99. You pilot a digging vehicle to dig tunnels and recover resources that are sold to upgrade your vehicle and ultimately save the farm from being taken by the bank. If you've played Miner Dig Deep on XNA, the games are very similar except that this one is a lot more polished.

Has anyone gotten the SimCity port? At $5, it's looking pretty appealing, but I don't know how good or playable (or not) it is.
Also, in that "New features of the 3G S", there was some hack-and-slash 3d diablo-like game. Anyone else see that? And know what it's called?

Sims3 is TERRIBLE. It does what it sets out to do well, there's nothing WRONG with it, but I find it entirely devoid of fun and charm.
SimCity is quite good thoguh.
I ordered the 3GS as I was elligible for the upgrade. Anyone know if you can use it without a plan, just as an iPod and gaming platform?
