General MMO: Best Boss Fight?
Thursday, July 10th, 2008 - 9:54am
Bear brought this up in vent the other night about wow but I want to take it further.
What was the most memorable/best boss fight you ever had in any MMO?
For me it was waking the sleeper back in EQ. Not only because how awesome it was to see that encounter but we C*ck Blocked the rest of the server from ever seeing that loot.
It was the defining moment for my guild and my MMO life thus far.

Rags in WOW was wicked the first time you see him rise from the lava and kill his wee servant. Even more so when he goes down and that hammer spins before the fall.
I'd say one of the most memorable is still the Baron in wow also as we killed that bastard for the mount what... 200 times and it still never dropped

I still like C'thun from AQ40 in WoW. Clearing all the trash to get to him was a bitch and somewhat excessive, but the actual fight was incredibly well thought out. Bringing 40 people together and having everyone (mostly) do the elaborate steps required to take him out was pretty damned impressive. You had a two front battleground with people being sucked into his stomach and doing damage on the inside to weaken him on the outside to allow for significant damage. All the while outside the groups were taking down tentacles and claws quickly before they wiped them out.
Timing it right with dots as a Warlock on the inside tentacles to get spit back out in time to pop all your trinkets and do massive damage on him in his weakened state was always a harrowing experience. I would still love to see the fight from a blimp like perspective as everyone rotated in groups from the Dark Gaze laser beam like attack and reestablished their correct positions. I have yet to see anything in any MMO that begins to approach the complexity of this fight, but I did miss out on a lot of the Burning Crusade raids due to time constraints. But given the tendency to reduce raid sizes I doubt we'll be seeing anything that requires so much coordination from so many people for awhile.
AoC- Indozola (Guardian), Bauchelain (Bear Shaman), Aphesian (Demonologist)
The Indiana Jones thing in Uldaman(I think it's Uldaman).
I love that thing.
The event in UBRS - the one right after all the hunters get screamed at to release their pet before jumping.
Black Morass. The whole thing is like one 30-minute boss fight. I'd like to see more instances after this model. No slacking, no "pacing", no nothing but 5 people who better be on their A-game, fighting for their lives, scrambling for every advantage. Oh, how I love this place.
Oh, and that dragon in Karazahn where you have to make sure the beams don't get to him. ("Don't cross the beams, that would be bad.")
Great mechanic.

I really liked both Razorgore and Vaelstrasz in Blackwing Lair (WOW).
Razorgore got very tedious by the time we were farming Nef, but I've never had a greater sense of accomplishment than killing him the first time.
Vael I just felt was a very fun encounter. Not really overly difficult (I never understood people who said he was the second hardest boss in BWL), but it was a ton of fun. I loved the intro when Nef takes him over, having infinite rage/energy/mana. It was a very fun boss (it didn't hurt that there wasn't even what I'd consider a trash pull between Razorgore and Vael (in fact the lack of trash in BWL was my favorite thing about the instance).

I had a love/hate relationship with Vaelastrasz. One person out of 40 could ruin the entire encounter. And it was really easy for that to happen. Get burning adrenaline and don't run away, or pull aggro, or a tank transition doesn't happen right, and boom, it's over. It was easy to waste an entire night on him, because after a few wipes, people start slacking off, and it has the potential to go downhill. On the bright side, it's a short encounter. When you one-shot him, it's always a great feeling, although that's not always an accurate indicator of how well the rest of BWL will go. And twice we had the entire raid wipe with him at 1% only to have a shaman rez and finish him off with a shock.
Razergore is like a big complex dance for the entire raid. It's actually pretty when you watch a video of your raid and everyone is running around doing what they should in perfect coordination.
Jin'do from Zul'Gurub. I'm a big fan of fights where hardly anyone is actually beating on the boss at any given time due to the complexity of the fight, and Jin'do with his random banishments (DOT THE SHADOWS) and skeleton-pile-on teleports (paladin/mage teams of excellence) and totem dropping was about as compartmentalized as you could get.
Awesome that you went on a sleeper run Wired, I always wanted to have the chance to do that, but I showed up in game just after all that was going on .. So I only ever got to hear about people doing it.

Oh, man, the stairs even in Zul Farak. That was utterly amazing at the time.
"And my son, too, thinks everything is a launchpad, every bug a meal, and every sunny day a reason to take all your clothes off and roll around in the grass." - rabbit
Lady Vashj - SSC - WoW - Hands down, one of the toughest fights in WoW. This fight requires perfect execution on all levels. Even the smallest of mistakes will cause a wipe. Even the most advanced guilds out there don't technically have her "on farm."
Kael'Thas - TK - WoW - This is like a highly concentrated version of Black Morass in that there are waves of mobs to deal with with no rest. He sends his minions out, then sends some floating badass weapons. When you down the weapons, players can pick them up and use them. They are legendary, by the way. His minions rez and it's on again. THEN you fight him.
It's amazing to me to see elements of many other boss fights used in these two encounters. There are plenty of fights that precede these that are meant to be training exercises.
I will also echo comments here that the C'thun fight in AQ40 is a sight to behold.
Oh crumbs, I'm all thumbs laying here with you. You're beautiful and busty and I'm a little rusty - I've forgotten what to do...
I have to agree with the Baron. I ran that instance over 60+ times, and even did a successful 45 minute run (when it mattered) and still NEVER had my Dreadmist Leggings drop. I'm not bitter or anything
But, he was a blast.
I'd also add the Ogre King from a Tribute Run...fun! The best part was bringing a newbie along and making them put on the ogre sit and dance for us.
(WoW)Snaekolf -- lvl 69 Dwarf Hunter (BM)-- Dragonblight
(WoW)Whyppet -- lvl 70 Gnome Warlock (MD)-- Dragonblight
(WoW)Tarnya -- Lvl 70 Human Paladin (Prot)-- Dragonblight
(AoC)Whyppet -- lvl 29 Necro -- Thog
(LotrO)Snaekolf -- lvl 39 Champion
I'd mention a couple WoW fights that were cool, but it seems most people here have it covered, so instead I'll mention...
While not particularly hard or really even a boss fight, the first Public Quest you encounter as a greenskin in WAR. You fight off squigs and give beer to a giant so that he can blow up a section of a Dwarven wall. The dwarves then pour out and you have to fight them until you defeat the Champion that comes out.
It's a very cool fight, and is refreshing to see a little more life breathed into quests.

One of my favourites will always be Thekal from Zul'Gurub. The first half of the fight is so controlled, then: "SHIRVALLAH! FILL ME WITH YOUR RAGE!" and suddenly there is a giant tiger-man running around and going completely apesh*t.
The one fight I always hated was Hakkar. Not because it was a bad encounter, but because I was always put on Son-pulling duty: while the other 19 people were fighting a giant awesome God-monster, I was standing off to the side counting seconds and keeping a watchful eye out for flying snakes.
(Both in WoW)
Not really a 'boss' fight, but the first time I completed the Sergeant Bly event was joyous.
Also, the couple of times I got to hunter kite Drakkisath in UBRS were great, mostly because as a hunter there's very little in the way of real pressuring moments (which the tanks and healers experience all the time). That said, there's probably a lot more 'hunter moments' that I've not even seen with my lack of raid experience.

I was a main tank in WoW and there were a few fights that I just loved.
5. Onyxia (Onyxia's Lair)
She's a big freaking dragon! I mean, this is the epic of fantasy roleplaying in my opinion. If you play Alliance side, fighting Onyxia is the icing on the cake. The storyline around Onyxia begins at level 1 and continues all the way through 60. Just fantastic story writing and game development from Blizzard.
4. Twin Emperors (AQ 40)
Just a great fight. The timing that had to work between the two main tanks was just some of the best times I've ever had in a game.
3. Thaddius (Naxxramas)
This is just pure fun! There's a lot of teamwork that is required during the entire fight. The two adds at the beginning of the fight that launch the tanks back and forth through the air was just brilliant. Then the raid having to move and be up on the charge changes during the main fight is just tons of fun!
2. Ragnaros (Molten Core)
The summoning of Ragnaros is truly epic. The way the raid must work together over several weeks to get the rep to acquire the water, so you can extinguish all of the runes. When he finally falls was an epic moment in raiding.
1. Nefarian (Black Wing Lair)
The story that deals with Black Rock Mountain is truly epic (from an Alliance perspective)! The rivalry between Nefarian and Ragnaros is simply awesome. The fact that you see Nefarian in UBRS just adds to the story development. And the fight is just a lengthy one that requires everyone in the raid to be on their game. And again, it's a giant dragon! Onyxia's brother to boot.
Rag hands down.
Everything up to that point in WoW was cool and neat but that was the first time it was downright jaw dropping. The clincher was the way he died on top of it. Ultimate climax for a fight and long instance. Honestly wish I killed more then past twin emps, seeing C'thun and some of Naxx. I'd be sold on a 60 dollar WoW 1.0 single player raid game so I could see all the stuff I missed by them sewering their own content with BC.
Drak in UBRS is my favorite as well and I've had other hunter moments in the few raids I've done.
I got a fever.... And the only prescription...is more cowbell!

Also, seconded on kiting Drak, I did that so many times I put it on my resume!

Everybody talking about kiting Drakk reminded me of another great Hunter raid moment: the Baron Geddon pet pull. There's nothing like sending your poor pet in on a suicide run against a building-sized living bonfire, then booking it down a tunnel with him in hot (pardon the pun) pursuit. Bonus points if he casts Living Bomb on you so everyone else in the raid gets to watch you run out of the tunnel and explode.
