One night in Manhattan - what to do?
I'll be in Manhattan for one night next week. I have no idea if my co-worker or the client will be planning any nocturnal activities but, in the likelihood they aren't, anyone care to suggest some? The hotel is near Times Square if it's a useful bit of information.
Edit: More info from further down the thread...
I still need to be presentable and functional for business purposes come the next day(s) so guess I'm looking for suggestions more along the lines of restaurants, bars (but not clubs), perhaps even a show or something. I've been there a time or two over the years as a pure tourist already, so I've probably hit all the standard tourist destinations (I even walked from Battery Park - after getting back from The Statue - to Central Park one day) but if there's some new, can't miss attraction (no, ground zero doesn't count; I have enough emotional scars from that day already, thanks) in town, then I'd consider it as well. Thanks.

What do you like to do? There's so many things that it would help to narrow it down a bit.
If I were a bad demoman, I wouldn't be sitting here dicussing it with you, now would I?

Do you want to do touristy things, or party things?
Do not disturb the Witch. Do not approach the Witch. Do not fire at the Witch. Do not point your flashlight at the Witch. Do not even look at the Witch, even with your flashlight off, even from a distance, ever.

I'd hardly call ground zero a "can't miss attraction" anyway. It's a big construction site and path station, surrounded by various pamphleteers and profiteers looking to expose a conspiracy, convert tourists, or hock cheap garbage that plays on tourists patriotism.
As far as restaurants, there's a million great ones, but I think it's fun to visit various celebrity chef places, since the food is usually very good and there's a high level of novelty in eating at Anthony Bourdain, Bobby Flay, or Mario Batali's restaurants. It leads to better stories about your trip to NY.
As far as bars go, I'd recommend barcade. Just take the L train to Brooklyn. You can sample some fine local and north eastern brews while playing classic arcade games. For a more straight up bar, my favorite in NYC is gingerman, on 34th. I think it's 55 beers on tap, most $6, and the selection is awesome (assuming you drink beer, and not the canned piss most American's call beer).
As far as shows go, there's a half priced ticket booth in times square. You get what's available, but you can see a broadway show at a decent price. I also like going to Sunshine Cinema and the Angelika, as you can often see films there that you can't see until months later elsewhere in the country, although it's only recommended if you're into indie and art house film.

Thanks, Yellow. Plans got changed so I'm only in town for one night now (and on the Jersey Shore the other). We'll see what I can squeeze in. Thanks again.

Well, if you stay one night, I hear the world will be your oyster.
Keep in mind that the bars are temples, but their pearls ain't free.
If you see a golden cloister, there'll probably be a god there. If you're really lucky, the god will be a goddess!
Hold on, my wife's coming to talk to me.

Ok, now, where were we?
Oh, right. One night stay can result in humility for even the hardest of men, so be prepared. Thin line between being sad about not getting a cab, and some guy trying to sell you some E on the street. I'm just saying.
If you're a tough guy, watch out for the sidewalks... Some people have had some NASTY tumbles.
Another thing, don't just talk to strangers. You can't be too careful up there. You could be talking to some guy, and after he buys you a drink, you'd find out he's the devil. Talk about a conversation ender!
Right.
So, that wasn't actually that helpful. You should probably ask someone who lives in the area.

Is there any kind of restaurant you can't find down where you are? If so, NYC probably has one. I generally go to the Korean restaurants done in the West 30s because I like Korean food and can't get it at home. Pick the one with a lot of pissed off-looking young Koreans sitting inside. That's where I went last time. I don't know if it was the best Korean place around, but it seemed good to me (and let's face it, whenever someone says X has the best food, someone else is going to come along and say that place is crap and the only decent place to get that kind of food is the place you didn't know about).
I freely admit I don't know much about NY, but the few times I've been there I've ended up at a bar called The Joshua Tree more than once. Pretty cool place. IIRC it's not too far from Grand Central Station...

I'd go to Jeckyl and Hydes. That's always a fun place to eat and the shows they have there are pretty unique.
Other than that I'd say just walk around. Times Square is amazing at night! Madame Tsaou's (err, close maybe) wax museum is down there, as well as a Dave and Busters. You can have some drinks, play some games. Right across the street is BB King's house of blues, might be a decent show going on.
Warhammer: Haruspex / Marauder at large
Priceless!!!
My standard suggestions: visit the observation deck at the top of the Empire State Building. Then walk to the Times Sq (after twilight), and have a dinner at the spinning-rooftop restaurant The View at Mariott Marquise (48th St and 7th Ave).

I've been there. It's a standard bar, and totally a meat market, so if you're looking to meet a lady for for your night in the city, then it's probably a decent place to go. Or if you're a lady, looking for a dude, it would also probably work out fine. If you're a dude looking for a dude or a lady looking for a lady... probably not the best choice.

Observation deck of the Empire State Building isn't a bad suggestion, but I'd do it only if it's your first time. Getting up there costs around $35 a person last I checked and you have to go through near airport level security.
All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.
Compleat Strategist on W33rd St around the corner from the Empire State Building. Full of wargaming goodness!

Cheap and good.
Gingerman or barcade are excellent recommendations in terms of bars.
I would not bother with a show: if you have only one night in NYC, and you haven't been there before, then why spend 2+ hours indoors. Go to Soho! Go to Canal St! Go to Times Square!
If you're going to Soho, stop at Bruno's Pasticceria Bakery on La Guardia Pl Between Houston and Bleecker St. One block above Houston. The very best cakes in town in a cozy tea/cofee shop ambiance.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is DHP still in Spamalot?
Just to reiterate for the skimmers...
You know, it just occurred to me that I've had Fettucini in Little Italy, Peking Duck in Chinatown, dinner at Tavern on the Green and drinks in the Rainbow Room... but I've never had pizza in New York. Go figure. Any good pizza up around Times Square?
