How Culturally Knowledgable Are You?
Monday, July 7th, 2008 - 12:35pm
This is a 2006 painting by Dai Dudu, Li Tiezi, and Zhang An named "Discussing the Divine Comedy with Dante". It contains some of the most influential people throughout time. How many can you name?

That's a cool picture.
I think I identified around 70%, give or take a bit.
I wish the picture was interactive so you could click on the people you are sure of and have their silhouette blanked out. It's gets kind of confusing trying to muddle over the ones already identified.
Queen Giraffabeth?
Rock Band Name Generator!... too funny to merely be coincidence.
"Truly, this mishap has set back the swamp sciences several years." - H.P. Lovesauce, lamenting a tragedy.
If I recall correctly, there used to be a site that would name all the people through an interactive version but that site no longer exists.

It's pretty cool seeing who is considered 'influential' from a non-American view. But Mike Tyson? Really?
No. Nuh-uh. Just because everyone recognizes him, it doesn't make him influential.
hee hee!

I wouldn't really go as far as saying "throughout time" considering that more than 50% of the people in that picture are from 20th century. And some of them are American sports figures from the last 20 years.
But cool pic none-the-less. As other have said, about 70-75% are recognizable.

Mord was showing this off at work earlier this morning, and we were around 50% or so. Looking at it bigger, I managed to pick out a few more folks. Bill Gates & Saddam Hussein to name a couple.

I'm not going to try and find them all, I am not a humanities buff. However, I do recognize many immediately (like Einstein, Bruce Lee, etc).
The same can be said of GW Bush. Just because he's the current President, and he started a war, he hasn't influenced anything that we will remember him for in 25 years, outside of the screwed up war. History will remember this as "9/11" -> "Afghanistan" -> "Piss poor Iraq deal" -> "F'd up American Dollar/Econ" and Bush will best be remembered like any other president, the guy who was in the office at the time but not worth discussing. (How many times in American History do we discuss the President as opposed to the Incident. I.E., we don't associate Dwight David Eisenhower and Vietnam like we should, we just talk about Vietnam.

Where was Osama at? I saw Saddam and Yassir Arafat, but no Osama.

I'd add some more to vector's observations. Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, prince Charles, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Luciano Pavarotti, Gengis Khan, Caesar, Lorenzo Medici, Vincent van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Ernest Hemingway, Kofi Annan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Benito Mussolini, Charles de Gaulle. And I believe the black bearded man in front of mother Theresa is Saint Augustine. With Socrates in front of him. And Moses in front of a camel. There are others (like Sigmund Freud), but I'm lazy.
Osama is the last one in the queue that heads towards the pyramids (upper right corner). The question is: where is Chuck Norris?
You can't take the sky from me.
He got my hair all wrong.

Feels Chinese-centric. I can identify a few. Many more besides are obviously Chinese, just judging from the way they dress. Understandable, considering who the artist is, but meh.
Guan Yu - Guy with the red face and long beard to the left
Sun Yat-sen - Two in front of Bill Clinton, with mustache and wearing a brown vest
Bruce Lee - You know him, you love him
Genghis Khan - Left of Napoleon
Mao Tzetong - to the right of Lincoln
Lin Biao - Behind Mao
Confucius - between Plato(?) and Gandhi
Lao Tsu - In front of Che Guevera and Fidel Castro, riding a mule
First Emperor of Qin - To the right of Michael Jordan, guy with the, uh, hat
Emperess Cixi - in front of Pavorotti
Yue Fei(?) - Far right, the general in armor

I believe that's Prince Henry the Navigator, between Bill Clinton and Bruce Lee.

To add a few:
Audrey Hepburn
Sigmund Freud
Marlon Brando
Friedrich Nietzsche (Maybe)
Otto von Bismarck (I think)
edit:
Charles de Gaulle
Charles Darwin (several people look like him)
Leonardo da Vinci
Alexander Fleming
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Shakespeare
Margaret Thatcher
Johann Sebastian Bach ?
Humphrey Bogart

Osama is directly above GW Bush (upper right at the near side of the long line of people in white hoods (KKK?)) who is ironically looking in the opposite direction of Osama all the way across the painting to Saddam Hussein.
I had a hard time locating Clinton and Gates. The brightness seems off with the two of them.

Curious to find Audrey Hepburn in there too. No Marylin Monroe or Bogey.

edit: NM found him. And oh crap Marylin is in there.

The only one I've caught so far that hasn't already been mentioned at least once is Shirley Temple.
There's others that haven't been listed but I suspect that's because they're so obvious it's not worth noting, like Abraham Lincoln and a few others.
*edit*
Who's that supposed to be up there between GW and Arafat? Kirk Douglas? I feel like I'm supposed to know who it is but I really just can't dredge it from the depths of my mind right now. Or am I right? It sure does look like him, I just don't get why he's influential?
