July 7th to 13th

Every time a PC developer dips his or her toes into the console waters, it's an interesting study in how they think about the controller bound audience. In the case of Civilization Revolution, hand coded by Sid Meier himself, there are a couple changes to the classic Civ formula to make it more palatable. For one, the Sim-like nonsense babbling from the on-screen advisers must be a comfort to the caveman console player. So too the large, eye popping graphics and colors. Yet, for all their efforts, the Civ series is a devil for details and all the sizzle in the world can't bury that if you still want that addictive "one more turn" gameplay. From what we saw in the demo and early reviews, it looks like that core is still strong in Sid's latest.
On DVD this week we have Stop-Loss, Sleepwalking, Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten and lots more.
Devil May Cry (PC)

I'm interested in how the DS version of Civ Rev turned out. If the interface controls well I will definitely be picking it up on Wednesday.

My 12-y.o. kid, who's previous RTS exposure has been limited to C&C, is in love with the Civ:Rev demo. Will definitely buy it tomorrow.
P.S. is it true that there is already a Zero Punctuation review out? Can't check in, since escapistmagazine.com is filtered here at work.

No, there's no Civ:Rev review at Zero Punctuation.

The Civ series has always had a certain tongue-in-cheek air of non-seriousness about it, but this just seems too cartoonish to me. I'm having a hard time reconciling it to what I know about these kinds of games, so my interest is close to zero.
Then again, I really lost interest after Civ II. The concept just seemed to repetitive and even after ole Sid returned it felt like more of the same. In fact, I think I preferred Alpha Centauri to Civ III, so having him back in the helm just doesn't get me excited like it used to.

Demos are available for both 360 and PS3
I urge everyone to try it out, especially if you haven't played Civ4. It's beautiful and the interface is great.
I'm kind of a weirdo, in that my first Civ game was III. For some reason, I just can't quite enjoys IV like I did III. CivRev looks cool, and it is at the top of my daughter's birthday list. She played the heck out of the demo. So it will probably be a day one purchase. Oddly, she has no interesest in the DS version. I'm really curious about that version the most, although I really enjoyed the 360 demo myself.

I'm torn; in my experience, Blu-Ray doesn't offer that much better visual quality for animated movies over regular DVD. That, plus my Blu-Ray apparently doesn't remember where it left off after you turn the player off, makes me want to lean more towards DVD.

I don't buy too many movies right now, so at the moment, my mentality is if I buy it in DVD now, I'll just end up buying it in BluRay later on anyway.

I agree that Alpha Centauri is better than Civ III. I also had more fun with Civilization ("one") than Civ II.
I do think Civ IV is the best out of all of them, but I'll always have a soft spot for Alpha Centauri ("VENDETTA!!!").
Me, too.

Well said. It never got old taking on Sister Miriam and her frenzied followers. That is, unless I was playing her.

I never liked games like Civilization, but I was actually enjoying the 360 demo. I found myself reading what the other people said, and thinking out loud, like an Edward G Robinson-like gangster. I just fear it may bore me like GTA4 did, although it is a different genre.
