Wasn't going to go for the special edition, but the Steam pre-order and special edition bonuses are very tempting. We'll see how much it ends up costing once they put a purchase price up.
Those combos look pretty awesome, thanks for posting. Looking forward to wading in as a decked out Arcane Warrior and doing the shockwave combo on myself in the middle of a group of baddies.
These are the best 360 videos I could find...they are not great

and
Looks a lot more like KoToR instead of Mass Effect, which is fine by me. I never really felt much control over the other characters in ME. I could order them to do something but I couldn't make them walk exactly where I wanted etc.
One thing that does seem to be missing which I liked is queuing up actions. I would like to tell my mage - "cast grease, then cast fire, then drink mana potion" for example. It doesn't seem like I will have that much control.
I hope there are more (and better) videos of the 360 version soon.
Seems that the PC version shall only have the so-called Baldur's Gate camera angle. Not that I care; I tried using that angle in Neverwinter Nights 2 but wasn't all that fond of it in a 3D setting.

Fixed.
I am pretty sure they meant that the view point is fixed to be closer on consoles, but for the PC version there will be more options.
This is what I get for doing a drive-by update.

That absolutely blows and makes me very disappointed.
Edit: After reading the article it makes it clear that it's not dropped just restricted to those with a 360 compatible mouse. This is tempting.
Pre-orders on Steam are out. Comes in two favors now.
Dragon Age: Origins, one of the most anticipated RPGs from BioWare and Electronic Arts is now available for pre-purchase on Steam!
Check out the two different versions: Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition; both come with an exclusive Steam item: The Wicked Oath!
Personally I'm still not jumping in yet. I was kinda let down by Mass Effect and I'm not that big a fan of high-fantasy (Lord of the Rings and Aion aside). Besides, I already blew my gaming budget for the rest of the year on Borderlands and L4D2.

Hmm? You're probably not reading it the right way. He's just mumbling about how you have to use the mousewheel to zoom instead of simply saying that that camera perspective is not available in the console versions. That's the standard trick/habit - instead of confirming that certain versions lack a feature you simply talk about one of the versions actually having a feature. As if it was luxury. Also, 360 games do not feature mouse support. Microsoft doesn't like that since the early days of the first Xbox, and when you're toying around with XNA Game Studio you will notice that you can't simply deploy a 360 title with mouse support.
And let's face it - even if DA did, it would be one of the most ridiculous implementations ever. Why would anyone require you to hook up a second device so that you can just use one of its buttons for a simple function?

Kind of silly that there isn't an option in the menus for this camera angle. Also kind of silly to ask people whether they'd get the PC or 360 version. Why would anyone spend more for the 360 version and give up the chance to have mods unless they didn't have a PC to run the game. I don't have a PC to run the game, so the 360 is my only option and I'd like to play the game. I'm not too worried for the angle and with Bioware's recent console focus, I'm pretty confident that it'll work well.
An extra $15 for a few in-game items and a soundtrack? Forget that.
I'm going to pass on Borderlands and get Dragon Age instead. L4D2 will be occupying my multiplayer time.
Now available for pre-purchase on Steam. (With a buy button and everything.)

I'm gonna buy the special Edition on Steam, they don't seem to limit by territory. D2D and Impulse won't let me buy from Mexico for some reason =)

I plan in getting the SE just for the extra quests. This "DLC items" thing really bothers me. It feels too much like cheating, or at least too much like a disingenuous part of the game.

Because I want to play the game with a mouse and keyboard but do not have a computer that can run it :(.
I was reading it wrong. Makes more sense the way you describe it. Sigh, shouldn't have got my hopes up.
My problem with the camera control in NWN2 was the lack of it. There was more control in NWN than 2. If it mirrors the setup in 2 i may actually pass on the pc because that was the main reason i stopped playing NWN2.
Besides, I already blew my gaming budget for the rest of the year on Borderlands and L4D2.
Glad I'm not the only one in this boat. If I can stay strong, this will be a nice game to sink into after Christmas when it's too cold and miserable to do much else...

Bleh, I kinda feared this might be the case when I couldn't find any camera controls in the 360 build version I played. The issue I have with the third-person shooter view is that it detaches me from the rest of my party, who are often out of sight. As with Mass Effect, I'll probably get so wrapped up in the nuances of controlling my own guy's powers/attacks that the rest of the party will be left to do whatever they feel like until they die. With the Baldur's Gate classic view, you have a pretty tactical perspective of the battlefield and can better see and dictate how the battle is going on a grander scale.
Still, as long as I have a firm handle on the fact that this is the way the game is going to be, I imagine it will still be doable: superhero me saving the world, followed by a ragtag band of permanently scarred and physically disabled distraction characters.
Ok, well, I must've been under a rock (and that rock is oddly WoW-shaped...) to not have this on my radar. I think I just didn't know it was a BioWare title.
I've got a lot of catching up to do... But for now, for those familiar with the previews and info out there at the moment, and who liked and enjoyed Mass Effect (only picking on ME because it's the latest BioWare title) does this look like it will be at least as good? Subjective question, I know, but I'm seriously tossing around the idea of the Steam preorder just because it's BioWare and there's some part of me that nags and says, "that's not a good idea just yet..."

Yeah, the party was very peripheral in Mass Effect. It felt very much like Gears of War with squad mates rather than an RPG with a party at times.
Mass Effect maybe isn't the best game to compare.
I would say that if you enjoyed NWN, but missed the tactical control of BG, then you'll enjoy this title in terms of gameplay.
Also, I'm hoping that this game is mature for the right reasons. There's a lot of blood and sex, but I will get greater enjoyment if there are themes like substance abuse, beatings, messed-up childhoods, molestation, betrayal and you have to deal with that by making uncomfortable decisions.
You know, Adult Mature instead of Teen Mature.

And what would you say if I had played neither game?
Impulse is not making this easy on me. I was hoping to buy from Impulse, but Steam is absolutely kicking their butts when it comes to offering this game. Impulse seems to be the only vendor that does not have an exclusive vendor item, and on top of that the CE version on Steam is $10 less.
In fact, if you guys haven't noticed, it bears pointing out again: CE version of DE on Steam is only $5 more than the base version at $55.
Then you are in for a treat!
Digital Download pre-order's a good way to go. Earlier in this thread there's a coupon code for 10% off if you use Impulse. Something like "Survey-2009". Pre-order, get some extra goodies, and pay $40. Not a bad way to get one of the most highly anticipated games of the year.
Edit - the coupon is correct, and it's 20% off
Will you be picking this for the 360 or PC?
A friend of mine (slazev, for those who get the reference ) said that DA looked a bit like KOTOR, another example, in terms of control scheme and I agree with him.
You can jump between party members and control them directly. You can also chose their stances, like in Baldur's Gate (Aggressive Mage, Defensive Fighter, etc) and focus on just 1 or 2 characters.
If you don't mind waiting a week, check the reviews. It's well known that there are many reviewers already playing the final build, so you'll get informed opinions about the story in the first or second day.

Yeah, but regular version on Impulse was $40 for me because I took that customer survey and got the 20% off coupon. That was a no-brainer for me.
PC. There is (free) extra content, it's easier to play with a mouse and keyboard, more options with the camera angle, modifications you can add, the online community. Only reason to go 360 is if you haven't upgraded your computer in the last 2-3 years.
Ah, what the hell. I'll probably buy this on Steam even though I already pre-ordered a physical copy of the collector's edition. I wanted the cloth map, but the more I think about it, the less I actually genuinely care about stuff like that. Plus, I'm getting pretty pissed off at my experience with the pre-order. Note to everybody: Even if we're talking physical copies for mail delivery, and even if we're talking about a really great price, never buy from the EA store. It still turned out to be a nightmare for me.

It will be on Steam, and likely a preorder. BioWare games have yet to disappoint me (on the whole... The Mass Effect inventory on the 360 was downright infuriating), so I'm optimistic.
That folks are comparing it to KOTOR is a very good thing, in my mind. KOTOR is one of my all-time favorites.

Seriously, the question for me came down to whether it was worth 10 bucks to get a magic ring that I could just mod into the game if I really wanted it. As far as the CE content goes, it's so unlikely that I will be seeing everything the base game has to offer that I can't justify spending the extra cash.
