Bringing a tear on Independence Day
Saturday, July 5th, 2008 - 11:08am
I heard this on the radio and was moved to tears with pride listening to it. I know that makes me sort of a softy or a square, but I'm still amazed by what the Founders managed.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

We do this every year in my hometown. A thousand people show up to hear it read. It's an amazing document.

"In other news, Miyamoto pissed on my head, and gave me a forecast of rain." - *Le
Wow, I'd never read that.
This paragraph caught my eye:
Hmm..
The man wears a bucket of KFC on his head. I wouldn't expect anything less. - Pred
Might have that sooner than one might think given what's in store for the future; however, expect for it to be a much bloodier affair that encompasses the entire world.
" On that same day, July 4th, 1776, George III, king of England, wrote in his diary, "Nothing of importance happened today."

There was no Internet or TV news in 1776. News travel across the Atlantic was measured in weeks, not seconds. George wouldn't even know about the Declaration for some time. The document didn't hit British shores until over a month later.
What's more, the diary thing is a myth. King George never kept a diary.
Kind of a double blunder on NPR's part, but at least they corrected the myth part. (Still no accounting for the "how the hell would George have known about it anyway" failure of critical thinking though)

Wow. This is the first time I've read the entire thing.
Dang, our Founding Fathers were pretty hardcore.

One of the most incredible documents in the history of human kind.
No sh*t. I was quoting the article.
MaxShrek .. looks like Jake.. drives like Elwood.
No sh*t. I was addressing the content of the quote.
It *should* be pointing out the obvious, but obviously NPR missed the obvious.

That's actually quoted by Nicholas Cage's character in the first National Treasure movie.
Reading this I'm so sad to see what we've been reduced to since then, I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen a internet speak version of it. (and hope I never do)

"internet speak"? please explain.
Giving Cosole Gaming an excessive amount of consideration since 1978.

"Hubris, thy name is Graduate" -- Mine. That's right, I didn't steal from .Alex "Spaz" Martinez .
They were probably throwing that out there because it would have been ironically funny. NPR is dry, but they have a sense of humor, on occasion.

I attend an annual 4th of July party where every year this amazing document is read. Sometimes accompanied by a flutist, Jimmy Hendrix on guitar, or once with Europe's the Final Countdown playing in the background whilst a sparkler show of amazing size was lit for all to see.
