The interesting part was when you limit yourself to only 15 you have to make some tough choices. I kind of suprised myself with my own choices.
I started the thread mostly so I could see what others have on their lists, but also to see if I have forgotten any. And I was shocked to see I totaly forgot x-wing. That was a good game

my vote cancels out yours
You know, I just realized that the Chessmaster series really needs to be on my list. While I wouldn't say it knocks NOLF out of the top spot it certainly deserves to be my #2, if for anything else the stupid number of versions I have of the game:
Chessmaster PC (3 different versions)
Chessmaster Gameboy
Chessmaster SNES
Chessmaster Xbox
Chessmaster 360 XBLA
Yikes!
In the order I thought of them....

Homeworld
Jagged Alliance 2
Master of Orion
Master of Magic

Cutting down this list was killing me.
I can't bring myself to put these in order:
-The Longest Journey
-System Shock 2
-Monkey Island
-Grim Fandango
-World In Conflict
-Heroes of Might & Magic III
-Baldur's Gate
-Baldur's Gate II

In order of how much of my life they stole:
I am floored by how rarely Quake has come up on these lists. That game had a mod for everyone. If you liked competitive pumpkin collecting, you could find a mod that did just that. I weep for those of you that never found happiness with a Quake mod.
XBLive: Ruckus
Lol
I had to come with with a grading system and then evualated about 80 games I thought belonged just so I could define those top 15. And yes it was brutal for me as well. I dont know how many times I went back and changed a grade. I have to admit though it was fun and surprising to me what I thought was good and then on second and third reflection thought was the true cream of the crop.
And if anyone is interested I used a 4 question system worth 5 points each, each game could get a maxium of 22 points. (4 additional questions could earn a bonus of .5 points each)
Criteria
1. (Interface), Design intelligent or not?, Effected by bugs?, Was it easy to use?, Organizaton, Was it linear?
2. (Plot\Options)Storyline, overall length, Game options and choices
3. (wow factor) Graphics, Sound, Concept
4. (advanced) Ambianaice, Was it gripping or Addictive, Did the game stand out from others?, was it fun
(bonus points)
(a) Was it innovative
(b) Was it replayable
(c) Is it mod friendly
(d) Will you remember this game in 10 years
Posting before reading other responses AND only using one example from a given series (for example, both Civ 4 and Civ 2 count, but I only include one of them). Also, I'm limiting my list to games that were primarily PC.
1) Ultima VII
2) Quake
3) Tie Fighter
4) Doom 1
5) Diablo 2
6) Half-Life 2
7) World of WarCraft
8) Civilization 4
9) Wing Commander Privateer
10) Fallout 2
11) Warcraft 2
12) Planescape Torment
13) EverQuest
14) Star Wars Jedi Knight 2
15) Portal
"I think Elysium has the right of it" - Certis
I, too, am an indecisive wuss and cannot put these in any sort of order.
Zork Nemesis
Myst
Riven
Team Fortress 2
Half Life 2
Portal
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
Freespace
Freespace 2
Starcraft
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (despite the abysmal cutscenes)
Alpha Centauri
C&C Tiberian Sun
Quake
Starship Titanic
May not seem like much of a list, but these are the ones that stick in my memory. That qualifies them.

I'll give this a week or two to fill out, and then I'll make a compilation with all votes being equal. Should be an interesting study.

Homeworld
Guild wars
Civ 4
Half Life 2
Portal
Quake 2
Dragon Shard
Swat 3
Call of Duty

I have a lot of other games that apparently are classics, but as yet haven't played far enough to form an opinion.

Chronicles of Riddick
Grim Fandango

- Starcraft
- Baldurs Gate 2

4. Mechwarrior
5. Diablo
6. Warcraft
7. Starcraft
8. Half Life
9. Call of Duty
10. Portal
11. Dawn of War
12. Red Alert
13. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
14. WoW
15. Dungeon Keeper
The list is in the order I thought of them. And if it's a series, I played them all and liked them, so I just named the whole series.
After reading over other lists, I can't believe I forgot Deus Ex and Descent. Also, KOTOR.
Um there is a conspicuous lack of Mechwarrior 2 in this thread...
Diablo 2 LoD
Mechwarrior 2
Quake 1
Diablo 1
Champions of Krynn
Fallout 1
Privateer
Jedi Academy
Mechcommander 2
Sim City 2000
Battletech Cresent Hawks Revenge
Wing Commander 2
Starcraft
World of Warcraft
Populous
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
You have a great point, it is interesting how many "blockbusters" dont necessarly appear on these lists. Its also interesting how certain games tend to be on almost everyones list.
Frankly I would have thought more folks would have said quake as well. Also it seems Doom isnt on too many either. Where Fallout and tie fighter seem to be on almost all of them.
Well we're not exactly the most diverse demographic sample.

Hmm...
Tie Fighter
Space Empires IV
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Company of Heroes / CoH Opposing Fronts
Victoria
Civilization IV
Pools of Radiance
Neverwinter Nights 2
Ultima Online
Crusader Kings
Madden '03
NHL Hockey -- the one year where they bled when you hurt them -- the one 'immortalized' in Mall Rats --
Vampire: Bloodlines
Metroid
X-Com UFO Defense
I wrote this out without looking past the first post, then went up to see everyone elses' selections. You know, it kind of (but shouldn't) surprise me about Tie Fighter. I played that game religiously and absolutely loved the story. I remember getting freaking chills when Darth Vader was flying along side you. Simply pimp, simply pimp.

Off the top of my head (I'm sure I'm forgetting lots)...
Thief
Vampire : Bloodlines
Deus Ex
Planescape : Torment
System Shock
Baldurs Gate
Half Life
The Longest Journey
Duke Nukem 3D
Dungeon Keeper
Morrowind
Gabriel Knight
Diablo
Bioshock
No One Lives Forever
Not in order (with the possible exception of Thief and Vampire being at the top) - and assume that I'm referring to all games in a series where appropriate (is that cheating?...oh well).
Except for Deus Ex...far as I'm concerned they only made the one game
.
