For those who don't know: Chrono Trigger is one of the best games ever done. I found it late, on an emulator on the PC, and it was so amazingly good that it completely broke my Counterstrike addiction for three solid weeks.... a week on the emulator, until I got to a spot that wasn't correctly emulated at the time, and then two more weeks on the real used SNES and CT I immediately bought. I still fire it up on a regular basis, and absolutely love it.

The story is involved and intricate, involving time travel, and what you do in the past will very much affect you in the future. There are many puzzles and side quests involved with this mechanic. They did some really clever stuff, which unfortunately I can't be too specific about without spoilers. That's actually pretty frustrating, because there's one bit in particular I'd just LOVE to talk about, but I can't without messing it up.

The sheer size and scope of the game is breathtaking; it just keeps going and going, into new areas and new stories and new critters to fight. I can't even imagine the amount of engineering involved in getting a game that enormous into just four megabytes. They must have been rewriting routines over and over and over to shave off a few bytes here, a few more bytes there... and even at that, they weren't quite able to get everything they wanted in, and there are a few loose ends that are never tied up.

It's easily a fifty-hour game on the first playthrough, and with thirteen separate endings, you can most likely count on at least one more full playthrough. The combat system's tons of fun, the leveling is interesting, and the characters are imaginative and colorful.

Keep in mind that I played this game AFTER Baldur's Gate 2 and Final Fantasy 7, so when I give it 'best game ever', that's an educated opinion by an adult, not a first game love by a teenage fanboy. Even now, even after all this time, this is a great game, and I highly encourage you to buy it ASAP.

Set aside some time, go in with a clear head, remember it was written in 1994 and had to fit in four megs... and I think you'll be as blown away as I was.

BAH.

It was a great game in the day. I spent my own hard earned $70 or whatever it was at the time to buy this cart for my SNES. It remains one of the only RPGs I've ever actually finished all the way through. Still... the original is readily available in multiple forms and is easy to find. If they give it the FFIII/FFIV full 3d treatment, I suppose that might be something sufficiently new... although that sort of defeats the purpose of the Akira Toriyama character designs and the original art direction. If they don't update it, then it's just another rehash of an admittedly good game.

Hell, give me a SEQUEL (another one, that is). That'll get me a bit more excited.

I wish SQUARE ENIX was putting more effort into original IP (ala TWEWY) rather than this endless stream of remakes.

I'm sort of with you. I like seeing some of my favorite games remade, but most of them have been a huge disappointment and weren't as good as they were on the SNES. There's always something off, be it sound, loading, graphical glitches, annoying translation changes, or all of them together. I think I'd be up for a higher-res version on the PSP, but I don't think I want a 3D remake like FFIV. Chrono Trigger is already beautiful, and this would be a step down visually for me. I could certainly go for a sequel. It took me a while to get into Chrono Cross, but it ended up being one of my favorite games as well. There's a lot they could do with a sequel. That said, I couldn't help but get excited when I saw that site.

Did anyone ever play the adventure game semi-sequel Radical Dreamers? The team that translated the rom did an incredible job and it was very interesting.

I would love a sequel as well but I could see this as a testing ground to see if Chrono Trigger DS will sell and than release a sequel if it sells good enough.

So, when will the clock be replaced with content?

I could've sworn SE said that they weren't concentrating on new IPs now. I would love to see more games like TWEWY but, unfortunately, no one is buying them. Heck, the few reviews of TWEWY I've seen on the major review sites were utter crap. They made the game look like a fashion designer sim (buying new apparel boosts your stats? REALLY? I've NEVER seen that before!). TWEWY is the game people were screaming for since the release of the Nintendo DS and no one cares.

I couldn't see that. We're talking about Square-Enix here. Their current business model seems to be capitalizing on remakes of older games and pimping out Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy. Hell, even most of their Final Fantasy related products are remakes of previous Final Fantasies. I certainly don't expect new content from them, nor testing for new content, and should new content arrive I doubt the quality of said new content.

I'm with SommerMatt on this one. Bah. Look, I loved Casablanca as a movie but I don't think anything would be gained if someone re-released it in color. Leave well enough alone and make some new games!

Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.

Well Chrono is sort of a new franchise. It doesn't have 8+ (Dragon Quest) or 13+ (FF) installments, so it's almost like no franchise at all for Square And I'm right there with you on TWEWY, it's the best RPG on DS hands down and I'm currently having a great time with it. I will be hoping for a sequel, direct or spiritual.

I always wanted Chrono Trigger for my DS.

I think this is a great announcement... However, i DO NOT want a 3D remake. The 3D remakes of the final fantasies (3 and the other one) look like crap! I really do not want that. They never released CT here though i have played through 90% of it on a ROM.

If it ends up being a 3D remake, Square needs to go the Kanomi route and include the original game as an unlockable or something.

A sequel would be even better though.

Hrm, I remember I picked up the psx version of chrono trigger that was packed with FFIV and being terribly dissappointed. The load times between battles were just awful, if I can get a snes emulator running on my psp I'll probably just play it there

I'm happy that they are releasing it on the DS. I still have the SNES cart, the box, the manual, and the map, everything that came with it. Howerever, I would love to play this on the train into DC every morning. This is my favourite RPG and I cannot wait for it.

Malor speaks the unmitigated truth -- even though I prefer FF6 on personal level, this was the best JRPG of the 16 bit era, and everyone who enjoys the genre should play it.

However, I'd rather see an entirely new game as well -- sequel or new IP -- that embodied the creative and joyful spirit of Chrono Trigger, rather than just a remake.

I hope they do at least retranslate it. It would be interesting to see a version of the game where taverns didn't have only medieval soda pop on tap.

Thing is - and i couldn't deduce this from the release - does a remake mean 3D on 2D art? Or redone 2D art?

I bet it's the same graphics from the orignial. The original has great graphics and looks good to this day. Do not mess it up by changing anything.

The game is a port of the classic Super Nintendo RPG, modified to take advantage of the DS's dual-screen presentation and touch screen functionality.

If it's just a port of the original, I'm no longer interested. I have the original. I have a hacked PSP. There's no point for me to buy a port just for touch screen features.

Now, if they had went with a true "remake" like Dragon Quest IV - VI, that would've been awesome. New look, updated music... I would've been there day one.

Ah! But port can mean direct copy or changed to match the system. They say they're changing the game by modifying it for the DS... so i'm still not certain that it's one thing or another...

I mean, how many PC ports have significantly better graphics and controls than their console counterparts? At least some...
