New PS3 but no friends online :'(

Hello all, I'm a long time listener of the podcasts and very rare poster.

Things have changed around in my life somewhat recently, I have a new job doing what I want to do and I my main PC gaming laptop has finally died. The graphics card was on the blink and it finally bit the dust (quite literally)

Due to my lack of a PC for gaming, I at first resorted to a PS2... but now due to a very cool moblie phone deal I now have a PS3

The only problem is my lack of real world friends who own a PS3 and I thought I'd venture onto these forums in order to track down some people to play games with and be able to expect a reasonable level of mental capacity

anyway.. my pasta is about ready, I better go!

I've got a PS3. I don't have much time for scheduling online play, but I do have The Orange Box, which means TF2.

What kinds of online games are you looking at?

Probably one of the most consistently thriving PS3 multi-player communities is Warhawk. I'm not sure if there are any other games that have real strong followings.

Warhawk is good. A lot of us have PSN names listed in our profiles, and some (like me) put it in their sig. You're welcome to friend me up, I reject no one.

A full list of people with PS3 accounts is right here. I think I'm sitting at around 50 people on my list right now, so there are definitely a few owners kicking around.

Yeah same here. However, I get the feeling that for most of them the PS3 is essentially a single player (or at the least, local multiplayer only) kind of machine. I know that is the case for me.

Right now, there's basically no PS3-specific multiplayer game that demands attention.

SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet, and (don't laugh) Buzz will help change that.

Buzz is a game that I think will end up blindsiding a lot of people. The idea of a online-playable quiz game with the built-in capability for creating and distributing user-made quizzes is something that people won't truly realize the potential of until the game's out. User-made quizzes takes the game from generic trivia into the realm of hyper-specialized trivia for specific audiences. Sports quizzes, anime quizzes, African swallow quizzes, "how well do you know me?" quizzes, all that kind of stuff... you'll see.

I'm on the list, make sure you add me. Haven't had time to play much since I'm getting ready to move to D.C. but I'm on.

Hey man if you are looking for some PS3 buddies and want the new game to play it's Battlefield Bad Company. A few of us from the site plus some RL friends of mine are picking this up today now that it's finially hit Canada. I started a post about it in the forums to. Inioth is my PSN name so friend me up if you are interested. I also play Warhawk and Unreal Tournament 3. Most of this community sticks to 360. More and more I am using my PS3 and PC for my gaming mostly because those systems don't just randomly break for no reason. (waiting for my 5th 360 to come back in the mail now) I know the friends list sucks on PS3 but it's lag free so I tend to take better performance even over some ease of use. I may be insane though. Also it sounds like you are from Europe which may work out because I am always on crazy hours with work so I am usually playing quite late here.

P.S. I don't have a headset for my PS3 yet but I will be picking one up on Friday

Speaking of SOCOM, did you buy the first issue of Qore for a spot in the beta? Just curious, cuz I'd heard that you kinda got a thing for the game.

I know the PS2 games, this new version sounds awesome.

That sounds super cool. I'd also be ok with a new version of You Dont Know Jack.

I'll be "developing" user-made quizzes, if that counts.

I certainly do have a thing for classic SOCOM, to put it mildly. I didn't care for the more recent versions, but neither did most of the SOCOM community, hence this game's harking back to the classic style.

Yes, I did buy Qore episode 1 for the beta key. I will also probably pre-order the retail version, which is supposed to have even earlier beta access. We need another Bluetooth headset in the *Legion* household for the PS3 we'll be getting the wife, so the retail version makes sense for getting that and a second beta key.

I also recently purchased a PS3, and my name is on that mega list... Feel free to friend me up.. I've sent out a few requests to some of the list. I'll be hitting the rest of it later in the week...

I am SO all over designing my own quizzes. Hope you all like John Wayne movie quotes!

If I can get Buzz cheap, I might give it a look.

By the way, anyone who wants to "friend me up," feel free. (doubtingtom396) I only have one online game (TF2), and I'm not allowing myself to play it until October, but we can compare Pain scores.

I only have Resistance and Metal Gear Solid 4, and I don't often play online games, but I welcome anyone to add Effin Bear, which is me in disguise! If the recent Quartermann rumor of God of War's Kratos being a character in Soul Calibur 4 turns out to be true, it looks like I'll be getting that for PS3 and if the online stuff turns out good I'd probably be up for some of that. Plus, I'm going to need people to play Little Big Planet with when that comes out.

Speaking of You Don't Know Jack, there's apparently a new one coming to the Wii.

This is true, but anyone with a PC or a 360 is more likely to end up playing with the crowds on those platforms.

There's a number of "me-too" PS3 online games (like the Rainbow Six: Vegas titles) that are good online games, but are more popular on the other platforms.

Until Sony cobbles together some sort of respectable online system, cross-platform online games will continue to be played on the other systems by anyone who owns more than a PS3. Hopefully, that situation doesn't last for too much longer, although I'm not necessarily looking forward to the time when the GWJ online console gaming community becomes more evenly split across the platforms.
