George Carlin Is Dead
Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT/0100 GMT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin's routine were indecent, and that the government's broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.
Carlin's comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed.
I saw him live a while back. Time had taken its toll on him, physically and in his material, but still, legend.

I once heard him blend the Lord's Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. I have never laughed so hard.

May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house. ~ George Carlin
Although I only had an opportunity or two to hear excerpts from his comedy routines, he was probably our favorite narrator in the Thomas the Tank Engine series.

"Losing things" was one of his best routines.
He will be missed.
Still my favorite comic. =(
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
NPR had a segment on him just about a week ago (it may have been his birthday). We started talking around the office about how he just seems full of energy and is still going strong. This is certainly quite a shock.
They were covering the upcoming Mark Twain Prize for Comedy he was being awarded.

A great loss to the comedy world. I know he brought great joy into the world. I myself have several of his videos and I would watch them when bummed and always feel better. The Carlin seven and football vs baseball skits were some of my favorites. he was great as the priest in Dogma as well. He was also the first host of SNL.

Grew up on George Carlin. I remember listening to his albums at camp as a kid. I had the seven dirty words memorized before I knew what half of them meant.
I'll miss you, George.
I'm not lost. I'm locationally challenged.

"Denee"? Really, he's got a French name? Such irony.
Extremism in the defense of liberty *is* a vice. It has been since the first Crown Loyalist was tarred, feathered and set afire, and it's no better now. It corrupts first the individual, then ultimately the institution it defends.
Double Posting for George.

Such an inspirational comedian to so many in the mainstream today. The combination of intelligent wit, sarcasm and play on words not to mention societal abnormalities made Carlin a legend. World is a much less funny place without him. He will be missed.

Ugh, not a way to start off the day. I will miss Carlin greatly. Definitely one of the true grand masters of comedy.

He got extremely bitter after his wife died, but he was still one of the funniest people who ever lived.
And a great conductor.

What a horrible weekend for Comedy. First Get Smart, then The Love Guru and now the passing of George.

I'm sure he would be the first to point out that the world is just as funny without him, only now we have to figure that out without his help. As If I needed more sh*t to worry about!
Carlin was a good man, from what I could tell. May he rest in peace.
