Bedroom Fan/Light Issue
Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 - 11:46am
So, the other morning I went to turn the light on (ceiling fan) in our master bedroom, heard a pop, and it hasn't worked since. I replaced the bulbs, reset the circuit breaker, but still no luck. The fan works just fine as do all other lights and outlets in the room. Any ideas on what might have died and are there any possible DIY fixes. Or, am I basically SOL and looking at replacing the entire unit?

You should have a mirrored ceiling anyway.

That's already planned for the next house.

Is it a remote controlled fan? I blew the receiving unit on mine replacing light bulbs. Stupid candelabra light bulb broke off its base, didn't notice it, kept twisting which shorted out the 2 wires. Big ol pop inches from my face. Nice..
If it is a switch, you still might have a similar issue in the guts.
Is it a 2 switch(light and fan) or just one?
Remote or pull chain?

It's a pull chain (one for lights and one for fan) with no remote and no wall switch for either function.

So just one switch at the wall for the whole thing, and the fan portion is working just fine?
Sounds like a piece in the light kit has blown. The light kit attaches to the fan w/ 3 screws normally.
Turn the power off!
unscrew the 3 screws, if its a recent fan, you should have it drop down, and be attached via a plastic connector, usually like a 3x3 plug. If so, unplug it, and bring it with you to a Lowes/HomeDepot and find a new kit that is the same brand(open the box in the store, make sure connector is the same).
That is most likely where the problem is. Just go home, plug that in(dont screw it in yet or worry about all the glass stuff, it should hang with out a problem), put bulbs in and turn on the fan and see if the lights work. If so, attach it and you're GTG, else, return the light kit since it wasn't the problem, and buy a new fan.
Unfortunately, I really doubt you'll be able to match the light kit. Their selections usually suck, since the fans all come w/ the matched ones. Good luck! You might get lucky.
They also sell the mirrors and glue you need for the ceiling. Good luck holding that up there while the glue sets.

Reinforcing Taer, cut power to the fan until you check it out. Might be that the pull switch shorted out and popped to open since you aren't tripping the breaker but you don't know what's going on in there and if it might short out causing a fire.

Gotta hand it to the boys, that's better advice than mine.

No switch at all....just a chain for the light and one for the fan. I'll open it up tommorow and try the kit suggestion. Thanks for the help all.

Right, but that pull chain works an internal switch.
That's the one I was talking about.

Gotcha. I thought you meant wall switch to turn on/off.
