I got Ganked!
So there I was, riding for my very life...
It was late in the day and I had about an hour left to play, so I go to darkshire and get the quest to take a crate of supplies to Netherguarde Keep in the Blasted Lands. "No problem," I think to myself, "I've got a sturdy mount and can out run anything that chases me." Yeah, right. So, into Deadwind Pass I go, and right off the bat I'm being chased by vultures with a huge aggro range, no way to avoid them. I die. The graveyard is by the Ivory Tower of Karazhan and it takes me 5 minutes to find my way out of the damn village and locate my body. I respawn and the damn vultures re-aggro on me! I jump over the edge and into the river below. Unfortunately, it a long way down and I'm at half health from just having re-spawned. I die again. Fine, I go get my beat-up corpse and swim down river. It takes me to Karazhan again, where I dry off and mount up. I mosey into town for the first time as a living creature and I'm immediately killed by some ?? level ghost. Great! I spawn again and this time I ride like the wind, more like a breeze, through town and up the road. Whew! Made it out of town, but what's this? Ogres! Tons of ?? level ogres are wandering around. I weave like mad and keep riding. I get dismounted from a good hit and keep running and make it out of aggro range barely alive. I find the passage out of the Deadwind Pass and head into the Swamp of Sorrows, it's nice to be out of that nasty Pass. I come to a fork and since I don't know the lay of the land, I randomly choose the right path. I encounter some NPC orcs patrolling the road and they attack me, but I blow by them on my mount with no trouble. I find the gates of Stonard and turn back. I have to ride past the orc patrols again and as I’m almost by them, I get dismounted. I out-run them and take a few seconds to heal up and recall my mount when this high level orc player rides up to me on his epic mount. He does the /wave emote to me and as I’m doing it back to him, he starts casting. My health bar goes bye-bye and I’m dead. Now, I don’t PvP and I never have my flag up, but something must have triggered it. Either that or just being in a contested area makes me vulnerable. I don’t know the specifics of it and I’m going to have to research it. Anyway, I respawn and head back down the road and I take the left path this time. It leads me to the Fallow Sanctuary and a bunch of feral Draenei who chase me around the swamps, along with big crocs and bog beasts. I finally make it through the swamps and out to the coast. Where is the pass into the Blasted Lands? Damn, I’m so lost. I like to explore with Moondrana, but there are times to resort to technology. I Alt Tab out to look it up and see its back over by Stonard. Great! I ride south down the coast and follow the mountains back east and as I pass by Stonard, the ?? lvl guards run out and kill me. By now, I know the routine well and the graveyard is right outside Stonard, so it’s a short run. I spawn as far away from the guards as I can get and ride for the pass. I encounter a few more wandering orc patrols on the road but ride past them and finally make it through the pass and into Blasted Lands and the relative safety of Netherguarde Keep. And I did it all within the 60 minute time-frame of the quest, so I was able to complete it. I was exhausted. I picked up the flight path and called it a day.
So, what are the rules for PvP in contested areas? Did my pet attacking the orc patrols when I got dismounted trip the flag? Or, is it just a free for all? I hope someone can explain it or provide me a link to that might help me understand it better.
Thanks,

Yup. Those patrols are PVP flagged, any aggression against them flags you too.

I don't play on a PVP server but I believe you are fair game in a contested zone on a PVP server.
Since your asking these questions here, I assume your not in a guild that can answer these questions for you? You should consider rolling a toon on Blackhand and joining up with the GWJ Alliance. There is no substitute for chatting and playing with 20-30 fellow goodjers every time you log on.
This was a great read, thanks for the story!

Well,
I'm in a guild, but it's not active at all. 40 members and I'm almost always alone. And, I've tried setting up the Ventrilo server, but I think my headset is not working right. Lil'Bean chewed on the microphone while she was wearing it. I'm bringing home another headset to try. I can always pay to have Moondrana moved over to Blackhand. The reason I chose Lightbringer was my good friend had his characters there, but he's let his account expire. So, I may look into moving. I don't want to re-roll because of all the time Ive spent on Moondrana. As you all know, "I don't game anymore, damn it!" So, it's hard for me to find time to sink into WoW. If The Wife (tm) finds out I'm playing the Mother of All Games, I'm a dead man.

As Serengeti said, even on a PvE server, if you attack a "PvP" NPC (it says this in the description), such as a guard in the town of the opposing faction, you become flagged for PvP.
So, you probably inflicted damage on one of those Stonard scouts. I've done that.
Either that or Bean is engaging in teh Peh Veh Peh with your hunter behind your back.
And seriously, you were a hunter? You should have killed that guy. No problem.

Well, Mars, you'll see that life on a PvE server will let you avoid the gankers and in our guild, you should have plenty of help getting what you need. Not just gear but friendly advice as well.

Lil'Bean has her own hunter character. Can't wait till Mom finds out and I get my nuggets crushed in a vice.
I can't believe how fast he dropped me. I don't think I got to finish my /wave animation.

I was gonna ask how this was possible, given your past statements regarding !gaming status. You should have rolled a paladin. Wife aggros on ya, just bubble+hearth!

Hmm... if you didn't attack one of the orcs, then you either had something on you that causes damage to an attacker when they hit you (like thorns), or you had your pet out and on defensive (pet attacks against something flagged will cause your flag to go up).
On a normal server, the only ways to get flagged is to flag yourself by command (/pvp), do damage to someone who's flagged, or do damage to a flagged NPC (pet damage counts).
On a PvP server, you'll be unflagged in lands favored by your faction, flagged in lands favored by the opposing faction, and flagged in contested areas.

Lightbringer is a Normal type server. It must have been my pet, set to defensive, that go me flagged.
I see Blackhand is a Normal server too.
Thanks for the info, Pur. I'll remember to set my pet to sleep-mode when making long runs through contested areas.

Just for kicks I went to the big elevators at the south end of The Barrens (Maybe I was running someone to Taneris), and killed the two guards there with my Lightning Shield... and it didn't flag me at all

This thread is BOGUS! There is no way Marsman is playing a character that DOESN'T swing around giant swords all day!

OK, I've got Ventrilo working and made a Dwarven hunter on Blackhand. He's been to IF and gotten his professions; herbalism and skinning. I've also run an 1st lvl auctioneer to IF to do my selling for me. I'll be contacting the guild next time I log on.
I helped out a guy by signing up for his guild so he could get a charter for Battle Rage. I liked the name. Made a gold piece off the deal. The charter is good now, so I'll be dropping out next time I log on.
EDIT: Smoothbore is now out of the old guild and ready to hunt.

Smoothbore, Dwarven Beast Master Hunter, is now in the guild! Just did my Pet Quests last night and tamed my side-kick Ursus the Horrible, an Ice Claw bear. I have a leveling plan all set, quests lined up and not too much grinding. Look forward to seeing you guys on-line.
I'm going BM with Smoothbore. I saw a old thread (2005) on Hunters, but nothing new. I'd love to discuss the class, but don't want to be accused of thread necromancy. Would it be OK to start a new Hunter thread or can someone direct me to one that's more up to date?

I think one of the best places to start is BigRedKitty's blog/site.
He also writes a regular hunter column for WoWInsider.
But I'm sure folks wouldn't mind another thread with more recent questions/advice.

Great story, Marsman. I died a lot in my 40s around Stonard. I made up for it when I hit 70. After Dustwallow, I came to hate swamps, which is why I spent/spend at little time in Zangarmarsh as I could. (If Northrend is frozen, that means no swamps, right? Right?)
P.S. If your pet is on defensive, it will attack whatever's attacking you. If you're worried about getting flagged while in a zone full of wandering NPC hordies, make sure your pet is on passive mode, which means you have to order it to attack. Better yet, park your pet and don't pull it out until you plan to attack something for real.

... and thats why I don't play WOW anymore. I can't stand paying $15 a month for aggravation.

Actually, it added an element of danger and excitement that improved my game experience. I learned from it and I'm a more careful player because of the incident.

Yeah, that's the elevator in Thousand Needles, not The Barrens or Tanaris.

Yeah, that's the elevator at the southern border between The Barrens and Thousand Needles. As an Alliance character, this is a point of passage between the harbour at Ratchet, and Gadgetzan, Tanaris.

Yes, but it's technically in Thousand Needles, so my point still stands. Nyah.
