logitech G9.. Worth it?

So. Amazon has the G9 at $67.

I currently have a wireless Logitech MX-Laser(first laser) mouse. Does anyone have any opinions on the G9? I know for 100$ at frys, no deal. But 60s is the high end of what I think a mouse could possibly cost.

Does anyone HATE it? If so, why?

Thanks

Yes. Mostly because it's ugly. No, wait, make that U G L Y, but also because I find it really uncomfortable in my hand.

I'd say the shape makes it impossible to know if you might find it comfortable if you've never used one before. Best Buy here has all their mice on display and the G9 is among them. You might consider going and fondling one a bit to figure out if it pokes your hand uncomfortably the same way it does mine.

That last sentence is made of pure awesome.

I have the G7, and it's 100% awesome. Don't know the differences, other than the different form factor, and the fact that the G9 is wired. Honestly, though, the G7 is 6 dollars cheaper, wireless, and I've never had a single instant of lag with it in the ~2 years I've been using it.

It's there. You just can't tell. Bully for you, but I hate that thing. And every other wireless mouse I've ever touched too. There's a delay in all of them. I wish I didn't/couldn't notice the delay because a wireless mouse is an appealing idea, but damn they're annoying.

Well, I've been using it for FPS's and whatnot, I've not noticed anything like lag. I'm not terribly elite, though.

Me neither actually. The frustration and the swearing in there comes from jealousy. I want it to work well for me. It just doesn't

Also: this totally belongs in Tech and Help. I didn't even notice at first.

How close are the mouse and the base? If some of the data is getting lost due to a weak connection, that'd do it. Mine's about 10 inches away with nothing in between.

The last time I used a G7 it was sitting maybe 6 inches from the base. I've used them in several different situations each time on a different PC, always with the delay.

I got a G7 and love the hell out of it.

Only had to have it replaced 1 due to a faulty reciever but it's the bomb... I play FPS's, MMO's without a detectable trace of lag.

I will open one of my six mouths, and sing the song that ends the Earth.

My opinion is that G9 is absolutely worth it. I have tried all the mouse from Logitech, MS, and Razer and G9 is the best that I have ever used so far, esp. if you have smaller hands.

The reasons that I love it:
1) all the buttons on the mouse are easily accessible. In fact, with practice, you could use the middle of your index finger to press the two buttons under the left mouse button w/o letting go the left mouse button.

2) Setpoint 5 software is the best mouse software that I have ever used. You could bind anything to every one of the buttons, scrolls on the mouse. You can easily create profiles, gone are the days when you have to create a profile for every game, you could create one for all the games if you want to.

3) the onboard memory of the mouse is nice. I have already taken my G9s (yeah I have multiple ) on my travels and it is nice to have all the key bindings and settings for the mouse w/o the need to install setpoint software.

4) The "micro-spin" thing that the mouse have is very nice for reading documents and browsing and programming. (It is that free spin feature introduced on the MX revolution, which I also loved).

The only negative thing that I have with the G9 is that if you try to fire up setpoint on a system that the G9 was originally configured on (so that you can configure it). All your settings on both the computer and the G9 will be reset to default (so yeah, you have to manually back up your settings if you don't want to loose them)

Decisions are just decisions, there are neither "good" or "bad"

G9 is probably the best mouse out there right now since it fits similarly to an MX518.
Best value for a mouse is a logitech MX518, the gold standard of mouse making.

Thanks. My current mouse is starting to dbl click, and it is wireless as well. I dont know if I notice the lag, but have always played wireless. But pretty sure I want a cord. Nothing sucks worse than sitting down to play and seeing the red battery light on.

Gonna have to head to best buy and find out if the brick is good.

I'm going to have to agree with all these points. I've been struggling to find a mouse I could be happy with for years. I've tried over 10 different mice (bought and returned all of them) over the last 2 years. I tried the g5 and Razer Copperhead the longest before just realizing that the laser didn't make much of a difference and they were just uncomfortable to use. The Razer felt really flighty, just like they all have since I tried the original ball models at Quakecon 2000. I liked the g5 ok, but I just couldn't get used to the weird dry grip texture. I settled on an MX518 that I felt fairly happy with for the last 2 years, but I haven't really been as good at FPS games as I was in the past. I figured it was because I don't practice much and change settings all the time.

Recently I built a classic Pentium III machine with everything I would have wanted back around when Quake 3 came out. I found an old Logitech mouse like their original optical model back from 2000 or so and I started playing a bunch of old games. I noticed I was way better with this older, smaller mouse than I was with my MX518. I could actively aim at things rather than positioning myself with WASD to where I thought someone might end up and firing. So I brought it over to my current machine to play some games and it was great. Rather than having to move a massive ergonomic mound, I could actively use a claw grip and aim like I used to. However, this old mouse was missing some of the things I liked about the MX, most importantly the side buttons. So I wanted a new mouse with a similar shape. The g3 seemed to fit the bill since it was the same shape as the old mouse, but they ruined it with the right side button and that awful drygrip texture. So I decided to give the G9 a try.

I've been using it for about a week, and I've been extremely happy. The small size is just what I wanted, and all the features are great. I don't use any weights though. I like it to be as light and easy to move as possible. The software is surprisingly great, too. I felt that the vertical movement of the mouse was a bit low, so I was able to bump up the DPI for that without changing the horizontal sensitivity/DPI. I wanted to use the smaller grip for it, but I still can't stand the drygrip surface. The surface of the wide grip is nice, and it's still small enough to move how I want to.

I think the problem with the big ergonomic mice is that it's difficult to move up and down with your fingertips since it slides back into your palm. Most people seem to prefer Mx518 and Intellimouse 3.0 type designs though. Perhaps it's because I use invert mouse in all my FPS games? I'd assume that normal people push forward more to aim at jumping targets or things in the sky while not needing to aim down very often. When you're inverted though, you need to pull back a lot. The only other inverted person I know also prefers small mice and a claw grip. I don't know.

Anyway, for accuracy in FPS games, I love it. However, it's probably not as comfortable for normal computer use as the MX518 was. It's still nice though.

Well, BB didn't have the G9. They had the razer Lachesis, but not on display.

Went ahead and grabbed the G9 from amazon. Thanks for reviews.

My fingers feel cramped when I use it. I have normal sized palms, and ridiculous ET fingers.

Hm. Well, my hands are just essentially scaled up versions of normal hands all around.

So not good for disproportionate hands then.

This is pretty much me.

All the Razer mice I've tried except the Habu have been too small, and that one had some weird driver issues that popped up later on and I couldn't get them to stop. I'd like to try the Deathadder as it seems pretty large and goes back to an optical sensor over the laser, but I haven't been able to bring myself to spend the cash when my updated G5 works so well for me.

I got it. So far, one complaint.

The screensaver no longer works.

There are a few complaints online about vista and setpoint not interacting well.

Anyone with Vista and G9 mouse have a functioning screensaver? Did you have to do anything to get it to work? Like the idea of setpoint's autochange modes, but would like the screen to be off when I'm not here more.

Thx

Got it. I had my old MXLaser still plugged in. Apparently, that HID filter thing only works with one mouse.
