Virus scanner recommendations

So, finally installed a virus scanner on vista......

TF2 crashes, takes forever to load.

So I attempted an uninstall.

it crashed.

now I'm in a void. It is sort of still installed.

it is bitdefender.

POS.

Yes, I've attempted to reinstall/uninstall.

I've whacked the programfiles/bitdefender dir. I'm annoyed

So, lets just say I go back to XP. I so far have yet to play a DX10 game. Would I miss it? If I did, or manage a cleanup, any recommendations on a AV product that doesn't suck? Kasparov destroyed quicken, I blame Bitdefender on my new instabilities.

Edit: Moved to right forum

Avast all the way. (which, given previous employer being one of the big AV companies, might be a surprise recommendation)

I've used it for over a year now, pretty good for a free one I think

Has anyone had bad luck with AVG on Vista? I may be upgrading soon and would be loathe to give it up.

Got any toast?

NOD32 - doesnt hog memory, works like a clock, updates itself numerous times per day while you dont even notice it. Since I`ve been using NOD32 (been around 2 years now, I guess), I have never had any problems.

Works fine for me. Their Firefox plugin broke with Firefox 3.0 though I expect them to have that fixed soon.

NOD32. I've been saying it for years and quite a few goodjers agree with me.

Seconded. Avast = win.

Oh crumbs, I'm all thumbs laying here with you. You're beautiful and busty and I'm a little rusty - I've forgotten what to do...

I was on the Avast train, until it took a big swing-and-a-miss at a virus on a computer I have to maintain.

Avast was sent to the bench, and the brand new re-designed AVG 2008 got called back up.

That said, Avast, AVG, Avira, and NOD32 all belong in the same conversation.

So what exactly do you get with the paid version of AVG that isn't available with the free and is it really worth shelling out money for?

I dig AVG, just turn off the email scanner. I've never had any luck with it (and don't really need it anyway).

Nod 32

Definitely NOD 32

Runs great on Vista 64 for me. And if it runs well on that, it will run well on 32 bit.

It is a very good non intrusive virus protection. It barley eats up memory

Speaking of NOD32, did anyone get the new version (3.0 I think)? I really really don't like the fact that I can't turn off email and web protection permanently...

Oh yeah I recommend NOD32 as well.

Though Avast is great for a free AV

Commercial use, mainly. The free one is only licensed for personal use.

I'll throw my hat in the Avast ring. I've been using it for years and have no complaints.
