Netflix and The Classics

I joined Netflix in February this year. My main purpose for doing so was to grab a number of the classic films that I haven't seen, that everyone says are so good.

I have, thus far, rented and watched the following classics:
Casablanca
The Godfather, Parts 1, 2 and 3
Dr. Strangelove
Dog Day Afternoon
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Citizen Kane
The Great Escape

I also have these in my queue, waiting to come up:
Network
Doctor Zhivago
Lawrence of Arabia
Gone with the Wind
On the Waterfront
The Maltese Falcon
The Caine Mutiny

I am looking for more suggestions. What classics am I missing that you can recommend?

I had it on in the background while playing TF2, wasn't really paying attention to it, though. The reason I came up with this thread was because I let my Netflix account stall for about two months, and just this weekend started up again. The vast majority of the stuff in my queue is not classics, though, and I really want to use this to see the classics.

FYI from what I've seen a good number of these classics are available through the Instant Download feature.

And thumbs up to ranalin for recommending Kurosawa right off the bat.

Check these out, too ... some of these may seem obvious, but I don't know what you've seen.

Anatomy of a Murder
Magnificent Seven
The Philadelphia Story
Rear Window
High Noon
The Birds
Hang 'em High
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Two Mules For Sister Sarah

I'll post more later if I think of any. Have fun!

Haha! For real.

Isn't that movie considered one of the worst of all time, right up there with Plan 9 From Outer Space?

Speaking of which, Plan 9 should be on the Netflix que as it's a "so bad, it's good" classic.

Double Indemnity, Deer Hunter, The Graduate, Chinatown, Rear Window all seconded.

I also second the Akira Kurosawa comment, especially his non-samurai films (Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, High and Low, The Bad Sleep Well. . .. . .how good are these titles? Lol)

If you like the Hitchcock you can pretty much go through all of his films with pleasure and ease. Noteworthy films would be Rope, Psycho, Vertigo, Rebecca, Marnie, To Catch a Thief.

If you really get into the Noir you also can't go wrong, all the Netflix suggestions would hold water and some of the classics of the genre would include The Killers (burt lancaster version), Out of the Past, Touch of Evil, The Naked City, In a Lonely Place, Mildred Pierce, etc.

Define "classics". Pre-1980? Pre-1960? Pre-2000?

Pre-1980 would probably qualify. Anything after that, I've likely already seen, or determined that I don't want to.

If 1980 is the limit then I'll have to push the date just a few years later to make sure you've seen Gandhi. Incredible film.

If you get Plan 9 you might want to get the MST3K version so you can watch the movie and laugh at the mocking of it at the same time.

And here I come, to be contrarian and pick movies that almost no professional film critic would consider classic, but hold up well and remain entertaining to this day:

Anyone who thinks John Wayne can't act hasn't seen these movies:
True Grit
Stagecoach
Rio Bravo
The Searchers
Trouble Along The Way
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Man who Shot Liberty Valance has already been mentioned, but bears repeating

And, just to throw in some movies that don't feature John Wayne;
We're No Angels (the Humphrey Bogart one, not the Sean Penn one)
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
The Wackiest Ship in the Army
Operation Petticoat
Battleground
The Big Red One
Gunga Din
The Buccaneer (the version with Yul Brynner is really good, but the 1938 one is good too)
Patton

(I had Kelly's Heroes on the list, but Vic already mentioned it. Great movie.)

I think he should have gotten one for his role as General "Buck" Turgeson, myself.

From his obituary on the BBC

George C. Scott wrote:
I have nothing against Oscar. I know what he stands for and it's terrific. And I think when people used to hang around and pat each other on the back over a drink and dinner it was wonderful. But when it became an international hoopla, where careers lived and died on whether or not you did or didn't get an Oscar, then it got out of hand.
