PSP Games Reccomendations

I've heard a lot of noise from people I know that there aren't a whole lot of good PSP games to choose from. I have a few I really like (I have several games, but unfortunately, I can't buy them all.), but I was wondering if anyone else had any recommendations? I've heared whining from all stripes of gamers, so genre isn't really a concern.

My favorites so far are Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (Thanks guys, I love the game, but I never would have bought it without hearing about it here.), Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and Me and My Katamari (Portable Katamari? Win.)

Liberty City Stories is also good, Ratchet and Clank is always amusing, Puzzle Quest is oddly addictive, I don't like match 3 games, but that one has me hooked.

Burnout: Legends is a lot of fun, but then again, I adore the burnout games. (Aside: Just got Paradise City for my shiny new PS3... Absolutely awesome.)

Any other gems I'm missing?

Every PSP collection needs to start with Hot Shots Golf. There may be no better portable game out there.

Jeanne d'Arc is considerably better than any of the other tactics games. By, like, a lot.

Wipeout Pulse is easily the best racing title on the platform, and the best Wipeout game since XL.

Patapon is necessary. God of War is too.

I'm MUCH more a fan of environmental puzzle games than "colored block" puzzle games. As such, Echochrome and IQ Mania are my two favorite puzzle games on the PSP by far. I even like the PQ titles, though they are further down the list.

And then, of course, there's the emulators. PicoDrive needs to be on every PSP, it's such a remarkable achievement in emulation on the handheld.

I'm glad to hear someone else likes Me and My Katamari besides me. Lots of people think the controls stink, but I never had a problem with them.

Chili Con Carnage is great fun if you like bullet-time third person shooters. I've played it through at least twice at this point.

Sid Meyer's PIRATES! is very good, and perfectly suited for a portable system.

Twisted Metal Head On is probably already in your collection, but if not you might give it a look see.

Agree with Legion on Patapon. And while you're shopping for that one, don't you dare skip Loco Roco. At least download one of the demos for it. Almost sickeningly cute, but a fun platformer.

WTF is pretty good too. My understanding is it's basically a warioware game, but the games have a darker edge-- you do play as a temp worker in Hell, after all (one of the minigames has you feeding a hairy monster, then scrambling to escape the cage before he eats you. It's virtually impossible, so you get eaten a lot).

If you get an emulator, you don't need any of the compilation discs out there, but I haven't got an emulator (and don't want to spend the money for a larger memory stick and a pandora battery), so I've got the Sega Genesis collection, Capcom's first compilation disc, and the Namco museum. They get a lot of play (Rolling Thunder is still a blast after all these years.)

Excellent suggestions. I'd even rank my top three picks in that order too (just make sure you pick up HSG: Open Tee 2, as it has all the content from the first game included).

Other top favorites of mine that you can likely find at a discounted price include:

Metal Gear Acid 2
Mercury Meltdown
Killzone: Liberation
Exit
Lumines 2
Daxter
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

Just to add my 2 cents - Jeanne d'Arc is pretty much the best turn-based strategy game on the PSP. If you're a huge FF fan, you might want to try Final Fantasy Tactics PSP, but time hasn't been kind to it.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Exit. There's a good environmental puzzle game.

I rather prefer Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, but that's probably because I'd rather play as Captain America and Iron Man than as Cyclops and Nightcrawler. They're basically the same game, anyway-- and they're both good.

Killzone: Liberation

K:L is an excellent shooter for the PSP. Be forewarned, however, that this game is Hard with a Capital H. Also a capital ARD. But the checkpoints are fairly generous, so I won't complain. Too much.

You don't need your own Pandora battery, you can use the one that's currently being passed around in the No PSP Left Unhacked thread for the price of shipping. And, if all you want to do is run emulators, you don't need a very big memory stick at all. Seriously, put yourself on the list, you won't regret it!

It begins and ends with Lumines. One of my favorite *experiences* ever. Definitely buy that. And definitely track down the first Lumines first. Shinin' is sublime. Hot Shots Golf is a must. As Legion says, it's probably one of the best pure handheld games right now. There are tons of great games for the PSP, but a lot of them suffer from not really being handheld games (I'm looking at you Disgaea and FFT). Jeanne d'Arc is a better handheld game and thus I think is the better Strat/RPG on the system.

Anyway, buy Lumines for sure.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is solid gold. Love me the hell out of that game (and I'm still looking for people to play over XLink Kai).

Disgaea is a must-buy too since it's got endless replay value but if you have a DS you might prefer stylus control to better graphics/sound.

Is it much different from MHF1? I just couldn't get into it, even though I really wanted to, so I traded it in to put it toward The Orange Box on PS3. Might have been my choice of weapons (bowgun), combined with the fact that I tend to be a hoarder, which meant I was very stingy with the good bullets.

Crush is an awesome game. Very clever.

I don't know where the PSP gets a reputation for not having good games. There are still a bunch of titles in my to-buy queue, and so far I've only traded in two games that I've bought for it.

I think it takes a specific type of person to enjoy MHF2. I put a few hours into the game and just couldn't find the "gold" Lobster did. It has great graphics, and seems very deep... it plays sort of like a single player WoW with lots of "go here, kill 5 of those, grab 10 of these" kinds of missions.

It was mostly true about 3 years ago, so many early adopters felt like they got burned and dumped their systems. Many people back then (and now) also took sides in the DS/PSP fanboy wars, and the "no good games" thing was one of the slams against the system people would repeat ad nauseum. Many of those people (the burned out early adopters and the DS fanboys) still spread that same story today, since they haven't bothered to look into the system since their initial dismissal. If someone can't find any good games in the PSP library in 2008, then I don't know what to say... other than they're insane

I'm a burned out DS fanboy who goes the other direction. We do exist. I think the PSP's library (while not as portable or "handheld-y") is better than the DS's.

Me too. I can still hear my crew chanting. Why they keep shouting "Yar glahar!" in perfect synch is beyond me, but they do good work so I let them do as they like.

The games that I've put the most time into are Jeanne d'Arc, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and Tony Hawk 8. The latter two especially bring out the truly impressive power of the PSP.

Hacking the PSP is a must. Even if you don't want emulators, you've gotta rip your UMDs to a memory stick and play them with practically zero load times.

Agreed - it's nearly a game unto itself (in a good way, if you're nerdy like that), and it's really made me enjoy my PSP more. No need to tote around games, quick load times, and SCUMM on my PSP!

I'm of the opinion that every electronic device needs to be able to play old adventure games.

The only thing that threatens SCUMM on my PSP is if I get an iPhone.

Ok, here's the list of games I have (Jean I had before, just haven't played it yet.)

Worms Open Warfare 2 ( I love the worns games)
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (I love this game)
God of War: Chains of Olympus (Short, but spectacular.)
GTA: Liberty City Stories (Good so far, kinda got distracted by Disgaea)
Arthur McLean's Mercury (I thought it was damn good, at least)
Mercury Meltdown (Haven't played it yet.)
Puzzle Quest (I dislike match three games, but this one is oddly addictive.)
Me and My Katamari (The controls are a bit worse than the PS2 games, but hey, what do you expect?)
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (No offense, but I don't see how you'd need more controls than what the PSP has for it.)
Jeanne d'Arc (a family member picked this up when I mentioned it to them)
Cube
GoSudoku (a family member grabbed this cause they love sudoku)

Nevermind the SNES and Genesis emulators.

Needless to say, I adore our local used games store. Outside of GOW and FFVII (Which I picked up new) I got the rest for under 100$ total.

The first thing I did with my PSP was mod it. Actually, making a pandora battery and then reversing it is pretty trivial. (I'm not very steady-handed with an exacto knife, but I didn't have any trouble. And despite how it sounds, filling in the cut with #2 pencil lead works like a charm.

Thanks for the info. Not only did that save me $20 on MHF2, but it also quashed what little interest I had in ever trying an MMO (which I don't have time to play anyway, so it's a win)

The thing that killed MHF1 for me was the level 2 sootstone mission. You can't bring a weapon, because it will slow you down, and even if you do you can't permanently kill anything that would prove an obstacle. You just have to grab the stone and hope to heaven that none of those leaping raptor-things sees you.

Tried that mission a dozen or so times, finally completed it (after realizing I needed to change my character's clothes), and never played it again.

It's a shame. Like I said, I wanted to like it. The concept was really cool. It just didn't gel for me.

I never got into the hacking scene. It's enough of a pain in the ass to have to update my firmware every time a new game comes out without also having to keep up with the latest cracks.

Except the notion that you have to "keep up with the latest cracks" is completely unfounded.

The process of keeping your hacked PSP up to date is the VERY EXACT SAME process as keeping your official firmware up to date: Network Update downloads and installs the newest firmware.

Hacking a PSP is a one-time initial install process.

The "latest crack" thing is a pre-CFW mentality. I agree that about 2 years ago trying to run homebrew wasn't worth the hassle. HOWEVER, as Legion points out, it's now just as easy as metaphorical pie.

I'd say both of the handhelds right now are somewhat slim in new releases, but between my PSP, DS, and 360, I have enough to worry about.

That said, some great games have come out in June, specifically:

-Space Invaders Extreme
-Lego Indiana Jones

If you guys can manage to check out Ys, Arc of Napishtim. It was definitely worth the time I waisted on it lmao. Not sure how many hours I spent on it, but I played it straight threw 3 days in a row give or take 6 hours a day idk and beat it...

It was awesomely addicting xDDD.

Adventure/RPG like but more of like the original zelda games on gameboy and stuff.

Psssttt also hacking makes the psp a whole lot more worth it!

Like, I just got into manga and I downloaded like a whole set of volumes for inu-yasha and I'm currently reading them on my psp with PEP Viewer xD. Awesome!

Yeah. But I mostly use my psp for PSX games basically...

These PSP titles guarantee that I will always have a system capable of playing PSP games:

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Patapon
Jeanne D'Arc
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
Crush
Lumines II
Metal Gear Acid 2
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Field Commander
Mercury Meltdown
Exit
Pinball Hall of Fame 1 and 2
Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins
Namco Museum Battle Collection
Monster Hunter Freedom 2
Wild ARMs XF

That list is just from the titles I currently own. I've played many other quality titles (rental) that, while they didn't appeal to me personally, are obviously top games that others would enjoy.
