Firefox 3 is out
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 - 4:29pm
FireFox3 is now available for download. Mozilla is trying to set a world record for most downloads in a day, so get it now and help out. Firefox3 is supposedly much better then previous versions, running faster and using a lot less memory then before.

Fear the flames...

Do they support inline-block yet? That's the one thing that always ticked me off about Firefox, the snubbing of CSS 2.1.

Good luck trying to d/l it though. Their sites are hammered it seems.

I downloaded it in about 3 seconds. I've been using it for about an hour and a half now and I really like what they've added.
It doesn't feel all that different that the Release Candidate 3 I've been trying for a few days.
In fact, it lost a few of my bookmarks and I wasn't too thrilled about that.

For a while I was getting a link with a Firefox 3 logo that was still downloading 2.0.14, but a couple hours ago it seemed to be fixed and I was able to download it. It's definitely snappier bringing up web pages and it seems like it displays text better, but maybe that's my imagination?

Yeah that link leads me here:

More people seeing it is not a valid reason. Moving to Tech.

Okay, now that link is going to a no-image page with the FF 3.0 download link.

Well I downloaded and installed it just fine. I randomly decided to check Mozilla and the link was there.
It looks like IE7 and Firefox2 had a baby. Haven't tweaked with anything yet.

Using it now. Seems faster.

I've been using the beta for awhile. Good stuff.
Big changes: faster, better rendering engine that's more compliant with more buzzwords, and doesn't leak memory, at least in theory. Much better page zooming for those on big monitors. Very powerful history interface; the system now can, if you wish, track where you've been for months or even years. If you visited a page but can't remember where it was, the history can be a big help in finding it again. The 'smart bookmarks' idea is an outgrowth of this tracking idea. If you don't like to be tracked, this is useless to you, but if you don't mind putting your browser history in the system, it can be pretty handy.
Most other things seem to be fit, finish, and general polish.
This is a very, very good web browser. The better scaling alone would have prompted me to upgrade, if I weren't already running the beta.
I had no idea that this was a feature!

When I couldn't get the new version of ff3, I decided to grab Opera 9.5 instead. I've grabbed FF3 now, but I think I'll stick w/ Opera for a while. The sync feature also works w/ my phone. It'sa verra nice.

It's only been a few hours of use, but so far it feels quicker and less bloated than the previous version, which almost made me go for IE7 with how often it crashed or just got bogged down.

I'm not digging how the "Open All in Tabs" is now opening more tabs instead of replacing the current ones open. I've searched the settings, but I'm not seeing an option to change this.

I've been using it for the afternoon and I really like the changes. Much faster, much less bloated, doesn't seem to eat up memory (though it can still take a lot when rich media sites are open) and all my extensions have been updated to work with it. It looks like they did a really good job with it.

Except for a hiccup where it deleted a rather huge folder from my favorites toolbar (let me tell you how much fun it was spending half an hour trying to get it built back up...) it's awesome.

Pretty dam fast.
Safari does a better job at sizing up pages on the Mac though and has a cleaner interface.
But man Firefox seems faster now.
I'm loving it so far. Past that initial hangup it is awesome.

It really is quicker. It was obvious how much faster it was this morning as I opened tabs for all the GWJ topics that I wanted to read. Normally if I click on 3 topics in a row, my cursor will turn to an hourglass for a couple seconds and then I can resume opening tabs, today the hourglass never appeared.

Hmm, mine was already set to true. I tried toggling to false, restarting and then setting back to true, but I get the same results.
EDIT - It seems that it does replace the first tab, but it's not replacing all the tabs in the set. I tend to group my stuff together and when I want news, I get my 4 tabs of news, then I go to my games and open in tabs. The news would then be gone and the 5 game tabs would be there. Now, I still have 3 news tabs after the 5 game tabs.

After doing some research, I think it's browser.tabs.loadGroup in 2.x. I'm not sure 3.0 supports that integer value.

Have you tried selecting multiple tabs before hitting the link? I feel like there is a way to do that.

Blah, right at the end there they sneaked in some sneakiness! Up until RC1 or RC2 or something, if I closed my last tab with Ctrl+W, Firefox would close. This is good. I intend the app to close when I close the last thing.
Now it goes ahead and closes that last tab, but it then instantly opens a blank one. Firefox does not close. This is bad.
My google-fu is weak, and a quick read of about:config didn't turn anything up. Anyone know how to flip this behavior from "bad" to "good?"
