NHL 2008 Entry Draft and Free Agent Thread

The entry draft is this Friday sometime. The first round probably won't be televised in the US but will be on TSN in Canada. Rounds 2 through 7 will take place Saturday morning and won't be televised other than the NHL network.

For those that don't know. This is supposed to be a "deep" draft. What that means I have no real idea.

Some good sites:
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/
http://mckeenshockey.rivals.com/
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=240884&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main

Stamkos is expected to go first overall. There are some very good defencemen and a few great offensive players. The Kings have 16 picks in this draft , including two in the first round (2nd and 26th overall).

As for Free Agency. That starts sometime after the draft. I'll look up the actual date soon. Should be a crazy summer since most of the players available aren't upper calibre but teams are desparate to make changes.

I'm really looking forward to the draft/trades/free agents, Columbus is supposed to be making some major moves.

Would not be shocked if they did. Howson has what I call "The Nonis Imperritive". He'll be in his second year as a GM and will have to make moves to put his stamp on the team. Columbus should be a great hockey town and the way the fans have supported the pitiful franchise (no offense but the management team has been pathetic until recently) is outstanding.

Right after I posted this thread I realized that I may ended up missing both the draft and the start of free agency.

Edit: Hot Rumour Appears that Ryan Malone has been traded to Columbus. Possible contract could be between 4.5-5.5 million and 5 years length.

Rumor around here is Hossa to New Jersey. I don't think it'll happen, not with the purse strings welded shut.

I can't see that happening either. Doesn't seem like a great match but who knows where he'll wind up. 29 teams are in the running.

All I can say is that Edmonton better not sign Redden. One over-the-hill defenceman signed to a huge contract is enough.
Also - MTL needs either Hossa or Selanne, and I've heard rumors for both. All likely garbage of course, but a man can dream.

As I said in the other thread:

One day the NHL won't be a Mickey Mouse organization...one day.

Some trades have already gone down. Fairly insignificant but they are movement.

Mayers (St.L) - 3rd (Tor)
Mason (Nas) - 4th (St.L)
Nashville resigns Ellis
Hordichuk (Nas) - 5th (Car)
Carolina resigns Tim Gleason
Anaheim signs Josh Green
Prospal (Phi) - 7th (TB)
Phi resigns Jeff Carter

The Prospal and Hordichuk trades are a little odd since both are UFAs on July 1st. It's more of a trading of negotiation rites than anything.

Rumours:
-Jokinen (the good one) to be traded today
-McCabe has waived his NMC to go to the Islanders
-Canucks are looking to move their 10th overall pick
-Flyers are offering Gagne and the 15th overall to move up in the draft

My quick and easy top-10 mock draft:
TB - Stamkos
LA - Doughty
Atl - Bogosian
St.L - Pietrangelo
NYI - Filatov
Clb - Schenn
Tor - Wilson
Pho - Myers
Nas - Boedker
Van - Hodgeson

Signing Free Agents like it's 1995:

New Jersey has signed Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik, re-signed Bryce Salvador, Jay Pandolfo and David Clarkson. Sergei "Sarge" Brylin was not re-signed by New Jersey. He was in Jersey for 13 years and 3 Cups, not a bad run!

From TFP:

The New Jersey Devils have signed unrestricted free agent forwards Brian Rolston to a four-year deal and Bobby Holik to a one-year deal, TFP has learned. Rolston, 35, played in 81 games with the Minnesota Wild last season and registered 31 goals and 28 assists for 59 points. In 977 career NHL games, Rolston has accumulated 286 goals and 348 assists for 634 points. Rolston, who will earn $20 million over the span of his new contract, was originally drafted 11th overall by the Devils in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Holik, 37, will earn $2.5 million next season. In 82 games with the Atlanta Thrashers last season, Holik registered 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points.

Other quick news:

* Jose Theodore signs with Washington
* Kolzig signs with Tampa
* Wade Redden signs with the Rangers

Damn, I was hoping Columbus would snag him. They did sign Mike Commodore and traded Gilbert Brule (he got screwed by the previous regime getting called up way too soon) for Raffi Torres.

Wow. Hossa to the Wings on a 1-year deal (something like 7-8mil). Talk about something I did not see coming. Couple that with the Wings resigning Stuart yesterday and inking a decent backup goalie (can't remember his name; he backed up Andre-Fleury last year in Pitt) and they're looking pretty well stocked for the upcoming season.

The Hossa deal is kinda strange. Guess he genuinely wants to win a cup. If you look at some of the multi year deals guys are getting you might of thought he would of gone after a 5-6-7 year deal with lots more money in the long run. Kinda have to admire his bravery that he is confident he wont get seriously injured or have a bad year that would effect him for next years contract.

Quote:
Hossa signed a one-year, $7.45 million contract with Detroit on Wednesday. He had rebuffed a chance to re-sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were reportedly offering $7 million a season as part of a five-year contract.

So he left supposedly 28 million or so on the table for a run at it this year. Bigger man then I would be in that situation thats for sure.

Columbus traded Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche to the Rangers for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. I'm going to miss watching Z, he could take over a game by himself. I don't follow the east, can anyone fill me in about Tyutin & Backman?

Detroit is known for getting both their existing guys and the occasional UFA to give a Hockeytown discount to be in the Motor City and perennial Cup contention, but that Hossa deal is a shocker even to Wings fans, I think. I really wonder what Hossa's intention is as one year contract is an awful lot of eggs to put in one basket. For the Wings a one year deal makes a ton of sense, since their GM Ken Holland (best in the league) has to get Zetterberg and Franzen signed to big deals after this season. This is gonna be another interesting year. I just hope that lineup is healthy come playoff time.

Greene and Stoll are good. Definitely not as good as Visnovksy.

Canucks offerred Sundin 20 million for two years. Looks like he turned them down and will wait a while. So far they've struck out on what they need the most: OFFENSE. If nothing gets done between now and training camp it'll be a long season.

And the list of teams with $$$ for Sundin is shrinking....it seems its down to Vancouver, Toronto and MTL...and I don't think it will be Vancouver.
Plus, we just signed Big Georges Laraque! Awesome signing, I think he'll fit in great.

anyone else think that these contracts are already getting silly? What was the point of fighting for a cap if the cap minimum is already above what most teams were spending before the lockout. NHL could be in for some huge shocks considering what currently is driving the profits is completely out of their hands.

He, actually, had a 9 year 81 million contract looking him in the face from some team (I think Islanders) and he turned that down for a one year. The guy has put his 'not-so-proverbial' money where his mouth is. He had his agent call Detroit to offer a 1 year, also, after they couldn't come to terms on a longer contract, which really impresses me.

Ah the proud Newfie Michael Ryder. He's...decent. Had some very very good years (2 time 30 goal scorer, had 3 straight 50+ point seasons) but struggled badly last year. Was frequently scratched and showed little effort to improve his play. Not worth the money paid. Very similar to the current Glen Murray but has the potential to turn it around. If he returns to his 60 point form he'll be a great addition and add some offense to the Bruins.

Canucks FINALLY do something. Acquired powerforward Steve Bernier from Buffalo for picks. Okay they have a first line (Sedin-Sedin-Bernier) and now need a second line (or part of one).

The Islanders are truly stupid with their huge contracts. They have DiPietro's, and bought out Yashin's, and they offered another bad one? No offense, but as bad as it is for the Devils, the Islanders are truly becoming a "Who cares about them" franchise, also. One of those teams that could move back into Canada if things don't improve and Wang pulls out (hmmm... Freudian!).
