web browsing performance on a smart phone

I'm considering getting a Palm Centro now that Verizon has picked it up, since I'm due for a phone upgrade, I can pick this up relatively cheap. For those of you with a phone with a web browser (not just the centro per se on Verizon's EV-DO network), whats the performance of loading up non-phone formatted web sites, like say www.gamerswithjobs.com? If I turned off picture loading, would there be reasonable performance? I'd love to be able to skim the forums when I have downtime.

I'd love to get a new 3g iPhone, but I'm tied to Verizon (on a family plan), plus the data costs are more than I think justifiable at this point. Verizon has e-mail and web browsing available for $30 a month, and that's pushing it, but if the experience is workable and useful, then I could probably convince myself to swing the extra costs.

The centro is appealing because I still have an old Palm with lots of software that I could load up. Or maybe I should just stick with my motorola dumb-phone and get an ipod touch now that the app store is on its way.

I'm in the wait and see mode for the Android stuff. Firefox Mobile looks really good and Opera Mobile works decently enough. The biggest thing is the resolution on the phones. Once the new models hit the market with the bigger resolutions things should get better.

I'm in the wait and see what Edwin does mode. Hopefully I can trick ATT into giving me an iPhone for new subscribe cost. Currently they believe I"m using an iPhone and see that I signed up in August of last year. They'll think it was just strange that I didn't have to get a data plan. Unless they see through my scam, at which point, I go back to waiting on Edwin to make up his mind.

Personally, I'm not going to bother with the 3G upgrade, because there's no 3G around here, and not driving, GPS would just be a toy.

But I have to say, the experience on WiFi browsing around is pretty awesome. The limiting factor is definately the speed of the system, not the speed of the connection though.

As for data plans: last time I checked I was still paying 60 bucks a month with unlimited data, which is less than I used to pay for my Treo. What am I missing?

I am kinda disappointed with 3G. I am using Sony Ericsson K850i. AT&T offers HDSPA 3G here in NYC, which is supposed to be the showcase. But the coverage is quite fickle. The phone frequently falls back to EDGE. When the connection is up, the data throughput is excellent, though.

I can't find it directly on the Verizon web site, but heres a link. When I choose to upgrade my phone, the choice of data plans is:
10mb $24.99/month
unlimited smartphone e-mail/web $29.99/month
unlimited wireless internet $44.99/month

The last option allows you to use your phone's wireless access on your computer, versus access restricted to just the smartphone itself with the second plan.

right, but what was your voice plan? My old verizon plan was 15 a month for data, but that was only if I had the 60 dollar voice plan.

The tethering would be nice on the iphone, but alas, no go so far.

I'll be migrating from my folks' family plan to my own plan soon, so I'm thinkin' 3G iPhone.

Google Android is tempting, but I'm thinking I'll end up eventually jumping from a 2nd gen iPhone to a 2nd gen Android handset.

I have a Android thread here. Here is the Ars Technica video that really shows off the possibilities. Here is a video of Firefox mobile concept.

I went ahead and got the centro, with the $30 email/web plan (which is on topof my voice service, about $118 total per month for 3 more lines and 700 shared minutes). I got the phone for free because I was due for an upgrade.

It's great! I'm typing this from a rest stop in Indiana. The web is pretty speedy, and the phone itself is pretty slick, even if the palm os is getting long in the tooth. I'll still probably have iPhone envy, but this will do for now.
