What MMO franchises/settings would you like to see?

The majority of successful western MMOs at the moment have similar settings. Sure, you might have different flavours of orc and giant over a range of heights of fantasy, but they're fundamentally similar. There have been a few other franchises (SWG, Matrix Online) and some creative new IPs (Hellgate London, for example) which have been moderately successful, but my impression at the moment is that fantasy rules the roost.

At a range of distances on (or over) the horizon we have both new concepts (like The Agency) and more fantasy (Warhammer). What would you like to see? What's your wishlist? Any existing franchises you'd like to see MMO'd? Any new settings or concepts? More fantasy? Less fantasy? Or do you not care so long as the game is fun?

I'm lucky, since the one I'd most like to see - Warhammer 40k - is apparently already in the works. Sure it may "just" be orcs in space, but I have a soft spot for the IP. Haven't heard much about it recently though...

I'm currently loving that both 40K and Fantasy are getting their own MMOs. But other than that, I am desperately awaiting an Planetside 2. I don't care what the IP is. I just want that large scale FPS battles in a persistent world.

Warhammer 40k gets me excited! Plenty of other IPs though, but where to start? Shadowrun, Mechwarrior, Dune, Mutant Chronicles, Call of Cthullu(have fun trying to level, and stay sane), Elric of melnibone, and a survival (permadeath) style mmo with zombies. Might make for some interesting pvp too.

Dark Sun (setting not the crappy D&D ruleset)
Mechcommander (MW universe, MC2 style combat )
Mechwarrior themed Planetside would rock
Spelljammer
Champions of Krynn (Dragonlance universe, lots of dragons and dragon mounted combat)
Al Qadim (sp? D&D arabian universe)
Wild West
Steampunk
Feudal Asian
Musketeers
Da Vinci era
Rise of Legends (art direction for that game rocked)

I'm still waiting to see how the Stargate MMO turns out. Is there any word on if you can play as a Goa'uld? That would be awesome.

Shadowrun.
Specifically the story arch timeline around 2071.
And since it can't be said enough.

Shadowrun.

The 2070 timeline introduces a wireless intergrated Internet that uses Augmented Reality technology, which easily explains all the HUD artifacts that FPS and other game genres have.

Keep the gritty feel, object hacking and guns to make the sci-fi/system shock crowd happy, but don't forget the Orc, Trolls, elves and Magic to keep the fantasy crowd placated.

Currently The Agency sounds like the one with the closes concept that would work fit the license: squad focused, objective based gameplay.

Really hope that all the rumors about what Smith & Tinker are working on how that the have the license is true.

-Star Wars during the KotOR era.
-Discworld (WTS Shampoo and beheading! PST!)
-A Dragonlance MMO, set a ways before the first trilogy.
-A Homeworld MMO setup similar to EVE. I just think it'd be interesting to see small fleets of players banding together, maybe even forming their own Kith. Maybe set it after the Taiidan Empire has fallen, and the galaxy is still in chaos (between HW1 and HW2, but ignoring the whole Cataclysm story arc). Classes could be set up by ship specialization, like defense, resource collection, combat, exploration/scouting, research (trade skills), or support. It wouldn't even be hard to set up factions, or add new races that players can play, if they don't want to stick with the Kushan. And each player would be able to augment their mothership/fleet by trading resources to the Bentusi.

For the Emperor!

I too would like to see 40K but at sametime it scares me considering how other GW IP has turned out. My only hope is that the one GW PC game that I really like Daw of War happens to be the same people that are working on 40K.

Of course that does not equal any sort of success, just look at companies that have made a 2nd MMO and see how weell they did.

Planetside 2 would be cool (maybe) as I did enjoy Planetside a lot.

Starcraft or Diablo also has some appeal to me.

Planetside 2 or Tribes as an MMO.

I had a blast playing PlanetSide but it always felt like it could have been soo much more an Sony kinda bailed on it.

Tribes seems like it would make and AMAZING MMO.

I think Wheel of Time would be an awesome fantasy setting. Magic system is ripe for exploiting into a great MMo system. Great setup for good/evil classes. Lot's of potential for back story and zones. Don't want to include spoilers so I'm being vague. I'm just finishing up book 5 and the whole time I've been thinking about what a great MMO world it would be. (And new ideas that could be implemented with Warders/Linking and such)

I would LOVE to see a RIFTS MMO. The setting of the game is such that anything is possible in the universe, and it's got a lot of tech intermixed with magic. I'd kill to play a Glitter Boy!

I'll pile on here. I would love a good space MMO that involves resource gathering, an appealing economics model and twitchy combat. EVE actually satisfies most of these criteria but comes up short in two areas: the combat just isn't exciting enough and the sense of immersion is lost because you can never see your toon. I want a space sim where I can get out and walk around the space station and pass the guy in the bar whom I just capped a few hours prior. Where I can talk face to face with someone who wants to sell me the next upgrade on my ship. Where the combat is twitchy and fun. Where I can't build a ship called the "Titan" (that's big enough to require a 10,00 man crew to pilot) and pilot it all by myself. It really shouldn't be too much to ask for a good scifi MMO that does all these things. SWG got a lot of things right but, like EVE, it falls short in enough areas that the game just doesn't cut it.

Car Wars - Even though I never got to play the board game much, I loved designing vehicles and really enjoyed the Autoduel computer game. All the combat calculations in this game would lend itself to being handled by a computer, and I love post-apocalyptic settings. I really tried to like Auto Assault, and it did have potential, but all the balance issues and lack of content did it in.

Fallout - I think everyone that's played Fallout and likes post-apocalyptic settings knows the appeal there.

Independence War or Privateer - As Copingsaw said, EVE did a lot of things right, but there are several things that keep me from really enjoying it. Earth & Beyond gave you the ability to walk around stations, but the universe was rather small, and the engine was obviously retrofitted from a fantasy RPG (the 3rd dimension was somewhat broken).

Edit: Added reasoning behind my choices.

Im still suprised RIFTS never ended up in any game or movie or animated series or anything (that I know of). It seems like a robust license that really lends itself to some fun gaming.

Can I clarify this and say either the first (Macross) or third (Mospeada) parts but not all three lumped together and soap opera-ized? Actually, even the second one would be cool as a stand-alone with a complete story rewrite.

And as long as we are going that route, I'd love to see a Macross 2 or Macross Plus MMO.

There was: Rifts: Promise of Power

I'd certainly enjoy a RIFTS MMO; but I think the developers' heads would explode trying to keep everything balanced. That said, somebody start the process and be sure to give the guy with the mop a couple extra bucks.

CannibalCrowley wrote:

You can't just throw that out there and leave it hanging! I'd be interested too, but I'm curious as to why you mentioned it. For me, it'd be their game design. Midnight Club 2 - despite being daft and having horrible cutscenes - was an absolute hoot to play. Their table tennis game struck a great balance between simplicity and sophistication. They probably could do something very cool, and would be a good bet for doing something different.

Anything GW. I'm at the point I would play a blood bowl MMO. I know they only want to release a game that is up to their standards but I almost don't care at this point. Even if its crap as long as it has the story and feel of the universe my money is theres to patch it out of crapiness.

Or a non fantasy MMO that isn't a flop. Wait 40k could be both. O the torture.
