360 standard or Elite?
Monday, June 16th, 2008 - 1:02pm
A 360 costs like 400 dollars here, and an Elite 360 goes for 600.
Does the Elite have any significant advantages to the normal one, besides the larger HD?
I'm just wondering if I'm better off spending an extra 200 dollars, or if it's just a big hard drive for storing movies or whatever.

HDMI connections. Beyond that i'm not sure.

I think they all come with HDMI now... I bought an Arcade version last month and it also has HDMI.
Also, there is a rumor going around that Microsoft might unveil a new 60GB model of Xbox 360... and there might be a price drop. So it might be worth waiting until E3... mid July.

The larger Hard Drive is worth it and since a standalone 120gb is already $180 the price of upgrading later is steep indeed. Not to mention I thought the Elite came with everything you need for Live as well. I think you'd be better off just spending the $200 upfront.
Also, I thought the Elites tended to not be the old chipset that likes to sh*t itself and die.

Yeah, the Elite is no longer the only 360 to have HDMI. The bigger hard drive and black color are the only advantages. Buy a cheaper one, or wait as Nei suggested. If you really find the hard drive size to be an issue, upgrade later. It probably won't be an issue, though. I've barely used any of my space. Just remember to do garbage cleanup every now and then (remove old videos and demos, arcade games you haven't played in a while, old betas, etc.).

Hmm, good call. I am in no hurry.
I dont even know what HDMI means, so I probably dont need it. : )

HDMI is the pretty much standard connection for HDTVs.
I just bought a "pro" model a month or so ago, and I don't think you need a bigger hard drive unless you plan on downloading TV and movie content.

I think this thread endorses every possible outcome. Good work, team.

Just got Elite a couple weeks ago and...price drop? Noooo....
I thought the Elite was the only one that came with an HDMI cable. The others support it, but you still have to buy it separately.
When Mimble and I were looking at which one to get, I barely started building my case before she said "let's just get the Elite"

I bought a standard a couple of months ago and it came with HDMI. I haven't come across any storage limits yet, and I've been downloading a ton of demos. But I'm not downloading a lot of games or videos through the marketplace and don't use it as a multmedia machine or anything.
Since Mex is, well, Mexican, I don't think has access to the video marketplace. Without that, I can't imagine ever filling the thing.

Just for the record, HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface.

The 120 gig hard drive version always seemed like overkill to me for a video game console, unless you plan on ripping tons of media to it. If you can settle for a smaller hard drive, the 100 dollar difference could be put towards a wireless adapter.
On the other hand, it seems like there's a reference to a blu-ray 360 on Kotaku about every other week.
You waited 2 yrs and 8 months for a $50 price drop? That's $1.50/month you saved.
At this point I'd wait for the next price drop and/or hardware revision.
Ok you saved $125 in Live fees plus the old games are now alot cheaper so you saved alot. Still it seems like a price drop is around the corner as is a new hardware revision. And you waited this long so ...
I'd definitely wait for E3.
If you can't I'd definitely just get the 20gig. The 120gb is such an unbelievable ripoff and some people are starting to report success with DIY hacks to get off the shelf drives working just fine.

If you're going to play Rock Band and download songs. The Elite is the way to go. I have a Pro model* and I've only got about 5gbs of space left.
If you've waited this long, though, what's another few months. If, indeed, there is a price drop, you'll be happy you waited.
*I don't really have the Xbox, per se, as its on its way to Texas because it died. Its the second system I've had die on me. I also know 4 other friends who have had a system die. One guy is on his fourth, no kidding. All Xbox Pro models. I know 2 people with Elites and not a problem......erhm.....yet.

That's true -- all 360s have HDMI ports on the back now, but only the Elite ships with a HDMI cable in the box. HDMI cables are standard though, so you don't need to buy a Microsoft-branded one with the typical first-party accessory tax, and you can get them quite cheaply (unless you get a $200 Monster cable or something, to make really, really sure that your 1s and 0s arrive intact).
I picked up an Elite back in August last year when they came out here, and the 120GB hard drive and HDMI cables were nice bonuses, but the main reason for me was that I knew I'd be getting a nice, fresh system. With all 360 units being theoretically equal now, you really just have to decide if the HDMI cable and extra 100GB of space are worth it for you, and like others have said, you don't really need the extra space if you're not getting in to Video Marketplace or Xbox Originals (I haven't used either, and I have about 98GB free, even with a pile of demos on there).

I'm in the same boat as pneuman; my Elite was bought primarily to stave off hardware issues and my hard drive's sitting around 100gigs right now without any cleanup and with quite a few downloaded Rock Band songs. In fact I bought the cheap-o 40gig PS3 specifically because of my experience with the elite's hard drive (and because I don't give a crap about backwards compatibility). Given the chance I might have just saved myself the hundred bucks instead. It helps that I don't have a HDTV so the included HDMI cable just kinda sits there looking sad.

That HDMI Cable should in NO way influence your decision to buy an Elite. Monoprice sells them for $4.05 a pop (not including shipping), and Amazon has nice cables (these are the ones I use) for $12.00. If you have Amazon Prime, like I do, the Monoprice cables are still a bit cheaper than the Amazon cables, but the return policy and procedures for Amazon are easier and more forgiving. Not that I've had issues with the cables, though. They all work well. Shipping from Monoprice can vary based on your location, too.

How about colour scheme? Because the Elite looks sooooo good on our shiny black stand
Seriously though, I didn't realize how much of a disparity there was in pricing given the similar quality of HDMI cables. Looks like Monster cables have struck again. Will definitely do more research next time. That said, I don't regret like the extra-large HD.

I must admit, the black was a factor for me -- all I need now is a black AV receiver, black Wii, and a black case for my HTPC and I'll be sweet
The worst thing about the ridiculous pricing on HDMI cables is when you see some poor confused sod shopping for TVs and being bombarded by an upsell-or-die sales guy who insists that "you really will notice the difference" between the $100 Monster HDMI cable and the $10 generic one beside it. Every time I see that happen I'm tempted to walk up to them and yell "either you're lying, or you're a gullible fool -- which one is it?".

Ha! You WISH you could find a $10 HDMI cable in a retail chain store.

Well, maybe not $10, but cheap
I think the generic cables here are actually about AU$40 in the retail chains, but the Monster one is AU$200, so it's still a big difference. The super-cheap place I get all my computer gear from has them for AU$15.

Honestly, I haven't seen a cable under $25... most I've seen are actually higher than that.

Well, I must admit that said super-cheap computer store is somewhat of a retail aberration. It runs on razor-thin margins, cutting costs wherever it can, starting with the website. Its show floor is really just extra warehouse space -- the shelves are stacked with boxed motherboards and video cards, and every square inch of the floor that isn't needed as a walkway is covered with cases and monitors stacked to the roof. The minimal staff have no time to offer advice, since half the time the line of people waiting to be served extends through the shop and out the front door.
Yep, it's the computer equivalent of the Soup Nazi. You walk in, line up, tell them exactly what you want, and they get it for you -- no discussions, no "helpful" suggestions, and no bullsh*t. It's heaven

Ok, I got the Elite version (600 bucks) and the PS3 version of Rock Band(300 bucks).
Yeah, you heard right. So I got home and I couldn't play sh*t =)
They told me I can return it tomorrow so no problem, but I feel like an idiot. To be fair, the big Rock Band box for PS3 has like NO indication at all that it's for the PS3 besides a small print on the back that says PS3. =P
So my black 360 is ready to be played, but it just sits there lifelessly. I guess I could play some songs or sumthin'.
Thanks for the advice tho, I got the expensive version just hoping it doesn't die.
