Spore Creature Creator June 17th + New Hands On
Saturday, June 14th, 2008 - 7:06pm
I can't believe if there is another post on this, that we aren't spitting out posts like an AK.

Can't wait!
Need more details on what's included in the pre-release full creature editor vs. free creature editor.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.

Saw an ad in Wal-Mart for the Creature Creator right near the front door. I was really surprised to see that sort of coverage from Wal-Mart for a pre-release item.

The demo version seems to have already been leaked.

What's the point of this? Is it to populate Maxis' exchange with creature designs? Because as a teaser, it's pretty frustrating to never go beyond this into the game.
So why was it released?
Extremism in the defense of liberty *is* a vice. It has been since the first Crown Loyalist was tarred, feathered and set afire, and it's no better now. It corrupts first the individual, then ultimately the institution it defends.
I'm having a blast.
Its is a pretty light teaser. 3 (15) arms, 3 (15) legs, 7 (20) mouths, 7 (20) eyes and sensors, 6 (20)hands, 6 (20)feet, 6 (20) weapons (claws, spikes, mace tails, squirting orifices, etc.) and 6 (20) details (scale kneepads, bumps, wings, fins, etc)
The numbers in parentheses are the rough maximum planned at launch.
The texturing schemes are really nice and basic animations give your character massive amounts of personality. Interacting with your offspring is downright adorable!
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Okay I just counted the actual amounts:
8 out of 40 mouths
10 out of 40 eyes
3 out of 12 arms
3 out of 12 legs
7 out of 28 hands
8 out of 32 feet
6 out of 24 weapons
10 out of 40 details
And we know nothing about the vehicle and building designers. There is also no part of the starting amoeba creator.

Going to check this out. Spore has me excited. I like making things.

Well, as limited as it is, be careful because it has that all important Sims feature...
The one where you just start piddling around with something and 5 minutes turns into 2 hours in a blink of an eye.

I've been having a blast with it as well. I found this section on the spore homepage. Download Creatures According to the "tip" to the left of that page. All you have to do to add one of these creatures to your Creature Creator is download the thumbnail ".png" to your desktop and then drag it onto the Creature Creator window. Or just drag it straight from the web page and into the CC window (in firefox at least) Apparently the entire creature is held inside a 120x120 pixel PNG usually under 100KB +1 for procedural animations.
I should note that some of the creatures were apparently built using the entire stock of parts and the demo version can't open those...
Oh and it looks as if the official release of the Creature Creator has been pushed back till June 18th

yup, demo of the creator tool was leaked - I've been having fun here http://www.pissheadnerds.com/news.php?readmore=119
And youtube has exploded with monsters sporting hormonal problems in the genitalia!
Possibly NSFW spore critter.
Man, I'm in pain trying not to guffaw at the office.
If I could only bring three things to a desert island, all three would be you. And I'd make you all kiss. -a softer world
Can we all agree not to post the butt sex monster video here?
EDIT: I guess not, Chumpy.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

my biggest concern is that the game picks up your windows username and tags your creations with them without any obvious way to change it.
Great way to tell everyone valid usernames on your network/PC.
Makes sense that Chumpy would post that horrible abomination.

It's not butt sex, it's doggy style.
I could also have posted this one: also NSFW (but still entertaining).
Man, this game was MADE for me. I'm forseeing a new avatar soon...

The F*CK monster is pretty good too. Viewable here if you scroll down a bit.

How much do you think the job that deletes all the inappropriate creatures out of the "sporeopedia" will pay?
Do you think there will be such a position or will we just be doomed to explore the universe only to find giant D*cks and F*ck monsters?

The F*ck Slug is adorable.
I believe that the community is supposed to take care of this, at least to a degree. If you see something inappropriate you flag it, it's reviewed, and if that user keeps making stupid crap they can no longer upload stuff. I may be missing a step in there somewhere as that doesn't seem to account for the possibility of someone creating the Reticulated C*ckmongler and a 5-year-old being the first user to see it.

The DoggyStyle Monster is the best! I played a little with the demo at home on my lunch break and I made a monster with a man part! This is going to bad ASS!
To bad the demo doesn't let you like fight another animal or something. I think my wife liked the man part monster I made, she was smirking when it did the "stomp"

Yoink! I've heard about that kind of "performance art".

I've played with it a little today. It gets a resounding "Meh" in my book. Yeah it's fun for 5 minutes to make a creature, then I want to move on. This may have actually turned me off from the game.
Xbox Live | Steam | Last.fm
I had the same problem but with a different result. Really want to see how the game progresses and watch my creature evolve into something. The biggest problem I see is sticking with the same creature all the way to the universe stage. Probably would want to constantly start new ones and never actually get anywhere.
McChuck wrote:
That might be my problem too. Maybe a compressed 3 stage vertical slice with a limited creature demo might pull me back in. Everything sounds great on paper, but the execution generally leaves something to be desired for me.
This isn't stirring my God-needs, it's just a 3-D sketch book.
Xbox Live | Steam | Last.fm
That's a great way to put it, as it really is just a sketch book that we have access to.
Part of what rubbed me the wrong way about the creator is that it looks like the only influence you have on your creature's performance is the total # of stat points that all your pieces accrue. So a combat creature would seem to just be a big pile of mouths or something equally silly. I don't know why, but I expected more simmish qualities, where body shape, leg placement, etc would make more of a difference. Instead it's more playdough, and I can make ridiculously fat things and have them run around on a single spindly leg.

The thing is that there are point costs for different pieces and there is a complexity meter at the upper right of the screen. Im sure you will have to do things with simpler creatures to gain money to buy parts. I'm also positive that the player will have to spend time with the game in order to make more complex creatures. (more limbs, more and different types of weapons or mouths)
Another interesting element is in the Details section. Some of the parts add to sneak. So there will be a sneak element to the game and it is mentioned that attacks from sneaking will have bonuses. (no I'm not confused and talking about AoC here!)
Also, don't forget this is the 2nd or 3rd stage of the game. There is the amoeba creation and development stage before this. And there is the vehicle and architecture stages. It also looks like there are weapons in the tribal stage and who knows if we can make those too. (if so, unlimited coolness!)
I am also waiting to see if they will have a creature export so that I can take my creatures into Maya, 3dsmax or Lightwave. (textured would be a major plus but not necessary)
