Father's Day - What to get?

My Dad is impossible to get an answer out of for Father's Day gift ideas. It's always, "Oh, whatever you get me will be fine, I don't care." At that point, I want to put his head through the drywall.

Anyway, I'm hoping to scrounge around from you guys here. What are you asking for for Father's Day? What are you getting your Dads?

I'm getting my dad a Newton's Cradle. I tied his in knots when I was about 3, and he spent the next 15 years trying to untie it. There was a standing bounty of £20 (when £20 was money) to anyone who could untie it, and no-one ever did. When he moved house a couple of years ago, he finally binned it, so I'm going to replace it. And when my daughter is 3, I'll encourage her to tie it in knots.

Also, a set of good screwdrivers. Always a good dad present.

On another note: my first father's day! Since my 17 week old daughter actully has more money than me, I wonder what I'll get?

Requires 2 non-replaceable LR41 button cell batteries for the monkey (included)

My dad liked Neil Diamond = DVD of greatest hits.

Actually he hates it when I go overboard, I think all these random days created by the various companies are rubbish myself as does he, so I went overboard with the gifts at Christmas instead. Went down far better.

Dear Old Dad is usually up for DVDs of obscure TV shows or movies that he hasn't found on his own.

This year: Banacek season 2.

This is my second father's day (congrats to spider_j!). The Missus and I aren't big into exchanging gifts with each other-- we're waiting for the little one to be able to make macaroni sculptures.

That being said, I have F/X and F/X2 on DVD coming. I guess I'm carrying on the tradition.

My father and I are rebuilding a frame off restore of a '57 chevy Bel Aire. Its really easy getting gifts for him at father's day/his birthday/xmas;-)

This year for father's day, he's getting screwed! I got him a brand new complete set of interior trim screws for the 57 chevy.

The liquor store delivers; mom gets flowers on Mother's Day, dad gets beer on Father's Day. I think that's about right.

For me the problem is that while not weathly, my parents are well enough off and have modest enough tastes that when they want something they just go out and get it. So there's no chance Dad will be dropping hints about wanting something in particular, he'll have already picked it up.

This has resulted in it becoming a new tradition for me to cook up something elaborate paired with a very nice bottle of wine.

Hm. Well, my dad does like ice wine (and so do I)... Might not be a bad route to go.

Alcohol is usually good... though to be honest i don't tend to buy presents for mother's or father's day. My love is enough Just like i don't really get much on valentines day normally - just a card.

I spend a load on them at Christmas and birthdays instead.

Father's day? In Germany that was, like, a month ago. I didn't know its date was region specific.

Anyway, I have two sisters that handle the presents so I don't have to think about it.

Tickets for a concert, maybe?

Well, I work in a town that has a candy company in it, and they make some of the best chocolate for north western PA, so I got a big box of chocolates for my mother for Mother's day... The ice wine would cost about as much as the chocolates did, so that's a good thing to get.

Is there enough sugar in ice to ferment?

My desire for a new laptop paired with recent blue-screens(memory parity errors) just coincided with an upcoming pseudo-gift day, so I'm getting a new laptop. And probably a hand-drawn and lettered picture book by my favorite 5-year-old author/artist.

Are you kidding? You've apparently not had ice wine before... It's the sweetest wine you'll ever taste. It's almost like a juice.

Mine is getting a light weight sleeping bag as he requested. He's a paramedic, and when he gets a chance to sleep at the station - there aren't always sheets or blankets to be had.

Usually my sister and I get him a wine kit, or whatever my mother tells us he's been hinting at that we can afford.

heh, my dad has been wanting to get one of those portable dvd players for a while now. I keep on telling him that those things are not worth it, for little bit more money he could get a really good PMP, or heck for $299 we could get him a EeePC that does a lot more than just playing videos.

(My folks actually don't have many dvds hence the reason that I think the dvd player is worthless... )

I'm getting (well, already got) a PS3. My dad passed away quite a while ago, so the stuff I got him back then were "World's Greatest Dad" coffee mugs and stuff like that.

I'm getting my ex (kids dad) tickets to the Rhianna concert to take the kids. I am mean.

Last year I got my dad a Case pocket knife.

Previous years I have gotten him Sports tickets, video games, DSL paid for one year, a pedometer, a deep sea fishing trip and a digital picture frame.

My stepdad likes to fiddle with his car, and is also something of a tech-nerd, and likes to save money so I'm thinking of getting one of these. It's something you hook up to your car to get a readout of fuel economy and error codes and all kinds of stuff. Not sure if that particular device is the best way to go because I haven't really researched it yet.

Can't go wrong with "World's Greatest Dad" stuff and a hand drawn card. I love it when my kid gets me that kind of stuff. Now when he's a little older and has a super high paying job, that's a different story. I'm going to be wanting high end electronics or luxury goods. But that's years away.
