For those who may have missed it, SOE is running a promotion where they're reactivating the accounts of past EQ and EQ2 subscribers and giving them free play until August. They're also restoring the characters for said accounts and giving them plenty of bonus items.

It's been over three years since I last played so I decided to give it a spin. I had no clue where the game was, heck I think I may have eBayed it. I was forced to use their installer so I let it download everything overnight.

The only hiccup that I've had so far is that the UI I was originally using wasn't compatible with the current version of the game (kind of expected after 3 years). The learning curve has beat me up a bit though.

Indeed, thanks for the heads up. When I played EQ2 I had to run it on low settings, will be interesting to see how it looks now.

I would jump on this for my old EQ account and give it a nostolgic run through Kunark.

I have no idea my old username and password. Nor do I remeber my email address I used to use back in the day.

I would be very surprised if I can somehow get my old EQ account and it still had my character. I haven't played since the first few months after launch!

I stopped playing after Planes of Power I want to see if my stuff is still there.

Go here and look to see your stuff.... Just search for your character name and find it's server. (I was originally on Xev, but that server merged with Druzzil. That may be an issue with finding your character as well.)

Oh, and that's mah paladin.

*Edit:
They did this a year ago, and I decided it would be fun to visit my old paladin. I went and downloaded the client, installed it and loaded up the game. It was completely uninstalled from my computer 15 minutes later. As was mentioned on the podcast not too long ago, EQ just does not hold up today. If you had been constantly playing it over the years you'd never know, but having played other games it just didn't work for me. I have lots of fun memories of my time (read: addiction) in EQ. But I tried to go back and have fun for a month and it just didn't work.

The new EQ2 newbie zone Timorous Deep is terrific! Of course I'm sure people will slam it for being WoW-like. It is still definitely EQ2 and I am having a lot of fun.

I got a Defiler up to level 12 in about 2 hours. And because its the Kunark all in one install with all the expansions, I got my little wolf pet achievement! He doesn't do a heck of a lot of damage yet but he gets some passive upgrades from achievements that seem nice.

I think they tweaked the healers a bit. They used to take forever to kill things because their nukes were very long in the tooth before they upgraded. The nukes upgrade sooner now and it makes a big difference.

About the Kurnak all in one part, I dusted off my level 50 Guardian which I retired right before the first expansion came out, but I can not seem to find my way to the Desert of Flame area at all. It seems that it should be a bell from the Qeynos docks but the bell doesn't seem to work for me. Has anyone who has not previously bought the expansion packs been able to access those areas?

Pretty sure there was a carpet you could ride from the Qeynos Docks, but I might be wrong. It's been a while.

For some reason I'm tempted to try this out. I think I had a 30-something swashbuckler and coercer a couple years ago when I tried EQ2. But, for now, AoC is taking up my time and I've never managed to handle more than 1 game (let alone mmo) at a time.

Yeah, AoC is sucking up my time which is probably the very reason SOE is gunning so hard with this offer. It's tempting since I have 64th level toons in each game (weird coincidence) but the thought of dealing with some of the old school problems in EQ1 and the blandness of EQ2 is not crossing my threshold for downloading...

Yea I spent 24 hours patching EQ1 from scratch just to see what it was like. Amazing to think how much time I wasted in there. Ran around with an old Beastlord alt for a while (anybody remember the all Beastlord guild we were running for a while. Amazing to think how much I enjoyed that at the time.)

But as said above it does not hold up very well. Fought a couple wolves and got killed in one of the new zones. That was about enough for me.

I wonder if ten or twenty years from now SOE will still be running those servers on some virtual node somewhere and they will do another free month. Might be fun to check it out down the road. Decades of farming plague rat tails by noobies....

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade...

Even though I'm deep into AoC I can't pass on a free meal. I have a lvl 34 assassin from a couple years ago on Permafrost but I think I'm going to start from scratch on a PvP server. Anyone else re-rolling for some PvP action?

i don't think I can EVER get over the BOSS spawn camping I had to do in EQ2 to finish quests.

Yeah, I looked at my level 50 quest log and saw the quest for the screaming mace still there, and remembered all those dam bosses I still needed in Cazic Thule. Killed some crocs in Ro, might look around a bit more, but it is not something that is going to pull me away from LoTRO.

My 46 Guard actually has that mace right now (go Shoal searching). However, I can't go back to EQ 1 or 2. 1 is a high level raid fest, WHICH I HATE, and 2, well, there's some bad blood between me and 2.

As mentioned above, the starting Kunark zones are pretty boss. If you haven't tried them, you should. Easy enough to hit level 10 in an hour or so. And you can't beat free.

Good point - EQ2 is definitely dangerous and can cause bodily harm. Wait scratch that it's fun and worth checking out Kunark if you haven't. (I just logged in for the free months and + exp) I truly regret you have such bad blood toward a game; perhaps try playing a priest over a necro?

I tried the EQ2 trial and remembered how much I dislike the art direction.

Back to AoC. Move along, nothing to see here.

I tried this today as I used to subscribe to EQ2 and had quite a few characters (my highest was around 35). I logged in to find all my characters gone. Erased. Kaput. Nada.

WTG Sony!!! Thanks for saving me the money to try a real re-subscription as I had been previously contemplating.

I am so going to quote that out of context.

I've been playing here and there. I haven't touched my Inquisitor because I've been spending my time with my Gnome Necromancer. He was level 15 when the promotion began and now he's at 23. I think that's a fair progression considering the limited amount of time that I've put in.

I don't really see myself plunking down the monthly fee when the promotion ends. Mainly because I don't think I play enough to justify the expense; but that's a time and availability issue.

Well I did it, I resubscribed.

My two biggest gripes (horribly complex crafting system and massive death penalties) were apparently fixed quite a while ago and it has me wishing that I would have resubbed in the past.

I'm now looking for a casual guild on Kithicor. I have a few in mind; but I'm taking my time deciding between them.

Going to check this out tonight for the last few days it is free. It is my understanding that if you re-up before end of the promotion you get the last xp digital added your account? Basically making the xp $15?

I wonder what the original EQ is like today... Probably still looks like SoL/PoP. Were there any graphic updates afterwards? It's been a long time since I've done that ol necro slow --> DOT pulling technique, which was actually quite fun.

There were specific zones that had better graphics with promises of going back (slowly) and adding the graphics engine onto the older ones...it was really odd to have your guy look great in the newer zones only to zone into a much older zone and have the entire place look like garbage. But hey, it's SOE they are nothing if not unconventional in their updating practices.

Even better, you get the "all in one" pack. So you're getting 3 expansions and 3 adventure packs. Plus $5 off the next expansion.
