If Saints Row 2 isn't on your radar, it should be . . .

Spraying pedestrians with sewage + insurance scam side missions = day 1 purchase. That's all there is to it.

I just watched all their Saints Row 2 videos and I can't wait. I loved the first game and from the looks of it they'll be the ones to give people the "over the top" experience that GTA abandoned.

Oh it is. It was on my list even above GTA4. I'm one of those Saints Row fans who fully appreciated the tongue in cheek approach to open world gaming, and it looks like they upped it a notch or two for the sequel. I can't wait to make my own unique character again!

That trailer really sells it. I'm curious now as to whether I missed a great game with the original Saint's Row.

seeing as it's $19.99 right now, you could probably go check it out
I haven't yet... too many other 360 games to play first (including finishing GTAIV).

Now that GTA's out and looking fantastic I think the original SR loses a bit of edge, there will be too many comparisons. It was (aside from Crackdown) the king of the open ended hill for quite a while, but GTA improved so much with the last game it's pretty hard to top.

That is a great video. Not so keen on the sewage part (yuck), but otherwise it does seem to have the right idea, hitting the things that GTA IV missed when it took a sharp turn into serious land.

I never played the first one...so two questions:
1. Is the series any good.
2. Will I need to play the first game to get what's going on?
I really didn't like the first one at all, and the trailers so far haven't convinced me this one will be any better. Unless the game actually had Gary Busey standing in front of the screen yelling at me. Then I'd be all over it.
I loved the first one. I doubt you would need to play the first to know the second but no one can say for sure till the developers say so or we play it. Either way rent the game it's fun.

2. Maybe.

1. Yes
2. First game ends with your character betrayed and seemingly blown to bits by a bomb. This one starts off with your character surviving, getting plastic surgery (hence being able to customize your character again) and going on the trail for revenge.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.
Whoa!

Seeing as how you can play female characters, that's some damn intensive plastic surgery

I think the new SR2 trailer does a really effective job at highlighting GTA4's weak points. After putting a lot of hours into GTA4, I'm feeling a little disappointed in its Tamagochi-ish relationships, repetitive missions, and general lack of things to do.
Saints Row had much more of a sense of anarchic fun.
As impressive as GTA4 is, the GTA series gameplay hit its high point in Vice City and has been going the wrong direction in the subsequent iterations.
The original just got real old for me after awhile. Unlike the GTA series, I actually liked the main missions and the game had a lot of options. What I didn't like was that they forced the player to do "side" missions in order to gain "respect" to do the main missions. Um....if I'm required to do them are they really "side" missions? More like grind missions really. This just got too repetitive in the end for me to continue. Once I beat one gang completely I traded in the game.

I really enjoyed the first one, and they would have to break the sequel quite badly for me not to day one it.
GTA4 is the greater acheivement, but I had more fun with Saint's Row.

I'm in the same boat. GTA IV is pretty and interesting but when I first played Saint's Row I was totally blown away. The character/car customization was great, the gameplay was ridiculous and over the top but felt a lot better than GTA's, and it's amazing just how much a game can improve when the designers remember that it's a frikkin GAME (oh god how I love the garage system).
Playing the last mission in GTA IV last night I was reminded how it was a driving and combat game where the driving and combat weren't that great. I got that feeling a lot less with Saint's Row.
Downside: game modes like Protect Da Pimp seem to encourage XBL pubtards to act even stupider than usual.

Well if you listen carefully you can hear a "splash" sound just before the explosion so I figured you jumped just before and survived. I guess the explosion did leave a few marks though. I think that's a good set up for the second game. Can't wait!
Oh, and SPOILER.

Saints Row is a lot more fun to play from a just pick up and mess around stand point. I can actually go on a crime spree:
-Pick up a crew
-Arm everyone
-Pick any of my saved cars
-Pick a series of activities that have no missions attached at all: rob stores, start a gang war, take down armored cars.
If SR 2 gives me more stuff to do OUTSIDE of missions, I'll get it. I still need to get Saints Row. I've rented it twice for a total of like 2 months but never actually bought it.

I've heard that the whole plastic surgery thing was just an off-handed joke to explain why your character can be female. And of course that set off all the teens who worried that the possibility of being a shemale would make them catch The Gay. More recently I've heard that the game acts like whatever you pick as your character in the second game is who you played in the first game, though if you pick a female there are a few inside jokes about it. I'd imagine it'd be more along the lines of, "nice to meet you, I'd always imagined you were a man, ha ha," than "hey, didn't you used to have a dick?," but on the other hand this entire genre has never shied away from crude humor, so who knows.

I loved Saints Row and I look forward to playing Saints Row 2, and the fact that the campaign will be playable in a co-op mode is awesome. However, they really need to provide the equivalent of GTA4's free mode -- that is what open world multiplayer is all about.

K, that video has made me want to purchase an Xbox 360 just for this game.
HELL YES.

I will say this, that is a kick ass trailer for a game.

Oh good lord. Whoever else said it before has it right, Saints Row is GTA without the "taking itself too seriously". And it looks wonderful.

Wow. That makes me want to pick up Saints Row 1 like tomorrow. This game looks much more interesting story-wise than... um... other nameless open world games.
