So, there will be Bioshock 3 as well

At least Take Two CEO says so. And it will come out together with Gore Verbinski movie. Still, I'm not holding my breath until I see where Bioshock 2 takes the game. If it works, though, this could be one of those fantastic franchises, right up there together with Thief and System Shock in my pantheon.

Let’s get 2 on the shelves before we plan 3.

You know they planned Karate Kid 3 before 2 was finished... Look how that ended up.

This bodes ill for BioShock 2. I smell a Matrix trilogy redux.

Was that the one where they went to Japan or the one with the girl as the main character?

I enjoyed those last two but they did somehow taint what I really enjoyed about the first one. I didn't need to be slapped across the face with 'Neo is digital Jesus' (whoops, spoilers).

2 - Was Japan
3 - Daniel joins the Cobra Kai because he is told Sensei John Kreese is dead.
4 – Hillary Swank was the Karate Kid

The fact that they're planning 3 already means that they're treating this, first and foremost, as something to exploit. I think it's entirely likely that 2 is going to suck terribly.

Also of interest from the interview:

Quote:
Exact time frames, he noted, have yet to be hammered out, however. BioShock 2 is due out sometime during the August-October quarter of 2009, and platforms for the title have not yet been confirmed. In the wake of impressive sales last October, Zelnick said BioShock was "a very important franchise" for Take-Two and that "roughly an every-three-year [release] schedule would be optimal" for new installments.

That's an awfully reasonable release schedule for installments of a major franchise from a major publisher. But please, don't let that distract from the entertaining frenzy of OMG SEQUEL MOVIE SELLOUT WTF!!!1!!

Also, Jordan Thomas, designer of Fort Frolic and the Shalebridge Cradle is creative director on Bioshock 2, which I find to be tantalizing.

Bioshock 4: Aerosmith!

I think the trepidation comes from the fact that sequels should a) change or innovate in some way and b) have a reason to exist. If 2K starts trying to get sequels out fast, (a) will be impossible in the given timeframe (see: Madden, Dynasty Warriors, etc.) and (b) is not satisfied, the game will be made anyway.

I'd much rather "(New Franchise Name) from the creators of Bioshock!" to "New Bioshock." If there's a compelling reason to return to that world, then I'll gladly buy it. But it being successful is not (from the player's perpective,) a compelling reason. Planning number 3 in advance of even the unveiling of number 2 smacks of shoehorning, which simply will not lead to as good a game as a more natural process which might very well result in no Bioshock 3 (or 2!) at all.

That said, I'm glad the the Irrational guys are enjoying monetary success.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm good with a second and third Bioshock, as long as one of them takes place on a spaceship with an insane computer system. A computer so insane it's shocking. Perhaps they could call it Bioshock 3: System Shock. Jus' sayin'.

I don't read his quote as indicating that Bioshock 3 is in anything beyond the roughest of "I think we'd call it #3 if #2 works out" stages.

He seems to be telling the investors that they're not going to delay the production/release of Bioshock 2 to coincide with the release of the movie. As the movie's 'in development' (which, in Hollywood, can mean virtually anything), that seems like a smart move.

I'd say it's only a question of time until Irrational Games erm... 2K Bosten/Australia has access to the System Shock rights again. Just sayin'.
