I am going to be traveling to San Francisco next week for business and if I am lucky, I might get all day next Saturday to do whatever I want. I found another thread with tourist attractions and restaurant recommendations already but I'm hoping that someone might have some other, geek oriented suggestions. Maybe a kick ass comic store, bookstores, or an anime dealer or an import video game store or maybe a forgotten arcade. Heck, I was even thinking of tracking down the Mythbusters' M5 Industries and getting a photo of it. I just love visiting those obscure little places not listed in the tour guides.

Also, if I remember right there's a sizable military presence in San Francisco. Are there any naval bases with public tours that I could check out? Or maybe a museum?

Lastly, I might be stuck with taxis and public transportation so I'm sort of limited in what I can do. Was hoping to get an early start (which should be no problem since my body will be on Eastern time) and visit at least 4 places before I fly back at 10PM.

UPDATE - Um, nevermind... Thanks for the suggestions but I had to take a different flight. I'll be flying home at 8AM Saturday morning which pretty much kills any chance I had for sight-seeing but my wife will be a lot happier that I'm home for Father's Day.

So.... how do you lock threads?

I did the Angel Island tour last year (with the Alcatraz package - you can get Angel Island by itself). It was used as a Union Civil War base, WWII base, and an Immigration (Internment) center among other things.

You might enjoy hitting the mall in Japantown, which is on Geary. Definitely a few anime shops there, and if you are Japanophile in general, there are quite a few other shops that might interest you.

As for import game stores, I've never really had much luck finding a good one, even in Japantown. Granted, I live 80 miles from the city and haven't invested too much energy into the search, so there may be something I'm not aware of.

In a more general sense, there are plenty of excellent museums, although my favorite, the California Academy of Arts and Sciences is currently closed for a major renovation project. The Museum of Modern Art and the zoo are quite nice, though.

You are in luck there -- unlike the rest of California, San Francisco (and the bay area in general) have pretty good public transportation in Muni and BART.

For military history, check out Fort Point, built to defend the bay during the Civil War. It's essentially underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. I think you can take the bus to the Golden Gate stop then walk down to the fort itself.

Alas, the significant military presense went away in the last two decades because California sucks at sticking together and fighting for what's good for the state.

My only advice is to avoid Japan Town unless you're going there specifically for the food. It's just an ethnic shopping mall basically, not really worth spending much time at. Good food though.

This. However, what about anyone that might have been going there and had the same interest? I think the thread could live on for that. But that's just me.
