I need new Headphones for Ipod
Friday, May 30th, 2008 - 2:25pm
So I broke my third pair of ipod headphones the other day and now I want something a little better. Looking to spend around 100$ give or take 25. Any suggestions, would be good. I will probably buy them from futureshop. =/

I would recommend Sennheisers. There are a fair number in your price range on Futureshop. I am currently using some Philips ear buds that cost around £25; I also bought some Sony buds for around the same price, but the Philips ones provide a much better sound. I like the rubber baffles, which are great for blocking external sound, preventing others from being disturbed by the music, and help keep the buds in my ears. Both have a much more solid construction than the Ipod ones, but neither are available on Futureshop.

Hm yeah I was thinking noise cancelling might be good. What do you think of ones with headband/earmuff type headphones instead of earbuds?

I received Sennheiser CX300's as a gift. I have been quite happy with them. It would appear that Amazon sells them for $50.
As to ear buds vs. headphones, it's largely personal taste. If you want noise canceling, a headphone solution is going to be somewhat large, while the ear buds just plug your ears. I can hear myself breathe with my Sennheiser's in. Ear buds are also much easier to stuff into a pocket.

I use banded head phones for gaming. The sound quality is a bit better, but decent noise cancelling will set you back a lot, and will make the phones a lot bigger. The Gadget Show on Channel 5 in the UK broadcast quite an amusing test this week, but they were pretty high end headphones that they used. The banded set came out on top, but not by much.
Personally, if I am out and about, I vastly prefer earbuds.
These are the sennys I was thinking of. I lost them somewhere, but they were a good set.

I've been very happy with Sony earbud headphones - eg. MDR-EX55, which start at about forty bucks, but more complex models are also available.
The closed design is pretty nice: the rubber ear cushion completely fills the ear canal, filtering out a lot of outside noise. You end up with really good sound quality, without having to crank up the volume like on standard ipod headphones.
I'm pretty sure that those are the ones that I have (my wife uses them now). The sound quality is really good for such tiny earphones; I was surprised to find that the Philips ones were better. In terms of design, the housing on the Sonys is a bit smaller and lighter.

I've been really digging AKG headphones lately, so I picked up their K81 DJ headphones for portable listening. They're a little big, but they do fold up nicely, so if you're carrying a bag around anyway they're fine. They're a tight fit over your head, but they sound awesome for the price. The only real complaint is that the cable is a lot longer than it probably should be, so I ended up having to bundle mine up a bit with a cable tie, and unfortunately that wasn't enough to stop me getting them caught on something that ended up shredding the cable. If you're more careful than me, though, they're great
While I get around to recabling those, I'm using the MDR-EX082 canalphones that shipped with my Walkman, and I've been very impressed with their performance, so I can only imagine that the higher-end Sony buds are great. I can definitely recommend Headroom as a vendor -- they have a tonne of great info on their site, and their service is great.

I love these, no need for noise cancelling as they are in-ear

Those look very cool, but they also look like they would cheese grate your ears if you turned your head too fast!

I have a set of CX-300's that I like when I do want a little bit of isolation from outside noise and a set of PX-100's for when I don't need the isolation.
The PX's sound a good deal better but again, aren't sealed so they don't work so well in noisy areas.
And I still lug around my 280 Pro's for when I just want to hear absolutely nothing but my music.
I know I'm taking this too seriously, but the end with that texturing is not the end that goes in your ear...

Ok, I laughed.
I just.. I'm confused how they can grate your ears since that part of the headphone shouldn't ever really even touch your ear much at all.
I know it's a joke and I've gone and ruined it, but I can't help it

Yeah, you're taking this way too seriously! But if we're playing it that way, the barrel might touch part of your external ear, not the canal, maybe? If it makes you feel better. If not, I'll withdraw the facetious comment entirely

But I thought ear-bleeding music was good?
I have a set of those V-Moda Vibe Duos for my phone, love them. I recently handed them down to my wife though, in favor of these:
Etymotics.
I know nothing about the company. These are quite different than other earbuds ive used. They go quite far into your ear canal, which I can imagine would really freak some people out. They seal extremely well - better than my old shure headphones even with the memory foam sleeves. Sound is absolutely out of this world, and the mic is awesome.

My Sennheiser PX200 headphones have served me well for a couple of years now; they're very comfortable and sound great. I've worn them for literally hours straight (I'll often bring them with my laptop to a restaurant (yumm Fazoli's) and sit and code & listen for hours on end) I've never found a more comfortable set of phones.

I've been using a pair of wrap around ones that at first seemed decent at first but after wearing them for a few hours at work they really start to hurt. They kind of pinch in too hard.
Anyway I will probably end up getting: CX-300s
or Smokin bud -
I swear to god that is the name, that's not why I want them, I do not endorse such activity (anymore).
Anyway if anyone has ever used those skull candys LMK.

I've had the Shure E2c headphones for a few years and they're excellent. They come with 3 pairs of silicone tips and 3 pairs of foam tips. I like the silicone tips a bit better.

Okay so, I have never used in ear - ear buds before. They feel weird, do you get used to it.
I am a little bit disappointed in the sound quality of the ones I got - those skullcandy ones above. I didn't feel like paying >100$ for headphones. I probably should have. The ones I got were 45$ after taxes - don't buy these if anyone is thinking of getting a pair after looking through this thread. =( T_T
I shouldn't have been so cheap damnit. I even have 250$ free futureshop money.
I may take them back.
I called them to check and I can get a full refund. I'll probably end up getting GOOD headband headphones and a new monitor or some such (of course with more than just the 250$).
So um, where can I find good reviews of technology products? CNET?

I only know one person myself that ever bought something from Skullcandy. He's been through two mp3 players and is on his second set of headphones. All broke within a month. I'd never heard of the brand until he mentioned to me, but after his repeated experiences with their products failing I kind of wrote them off forever.
Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, and Shure/Etymotic all the way.

I think I'm going to get these. Too bad there are only 3 user reviews on cnet. (All good ones)

I have pairs of these that I use at work and at home. They're cheap, and sound pretty darn good.
When I want to use earbuds, I use the Zune earbuds that came with it. They're impressive for headphones that came packed in, but I wouldn't buy them separately.

Check out http://headphone.com/ I have ordered from them in the past with great success. They have great reviews of a bunch of headphones. You can even compare different models side-by-side by looking at their frequency response. He also weighs the pros and cons of different types of headphones. Make sure you do not go to headphones dot com. I have no experience with them. I mess that up all the time. The site I am talking about is a company call HeadRoom.
