GWJ Summer Music - 2008
What with Memorial Day having come and gone, the summer has, essentially, begun. Which means road trips, vacations, sweltering heat, gorgeous afternoons you end up spending at work, barbecues, trips to see old friends, concerts and, of course, the growing sense of dread that fills you every time you drive past a gas station.
However, that also means music. At least for me, I generally do the most replenishing of my musical collections during the summer months, and, for the sake of this thread, i'm assuming some of you do too.
So, what's everyone listening to this summer? Alternatively, are there any albums that you're looking forward to? Any concerts you're anticipating?
For my money, I know i'm looking forward to catching 65daysofstatic in NYC on the 19th of June, John Scofield at the Blue Note, and Spoon at Prospect Park. Moreover, thanks to Pandora, i'll be spending the summer catching up on The Crusaders, Gerald Albright, Joe Cuba, Stanley Turrentine, 9th Wonder and Little Brother.
You?

Currently I'm listening to my favorite streaming audio station MusicOne. It's finally back, baby! It shut down a year ago which sucked because it used to be the best way to find new electronic music.
Other stuff on my summer playlist: September, Chemical Brothers, David Guetta, Mylo, Andain, Booty Luv, Royksopp and Morcheeba.

I saw these guys called Underwhelmed over the weekend at small place in NYC. They have awesome rock music. The rock caters to more of the Nickleback, 3 doors down , trapt kinda crowed.
Check them out on iTunes. The album is "the war between myself and me".
Thanks for standin' still Wanker!
-XBox Gamertag: Tempest Blaze (Without the Y)
Metronomy, Kavinsky, and Late of the Pier have been my latest obsessions. Also the newest M83 ("Saturdays = Youth") was better than the last one ("You Appearing" was very good I thought).
Well, I don't like to toot my own horn, but I'm a pretty good amateur rectal photographer. Would you like to see my portfolio?
Song of the Week: ...on Facebook...
Weezer's Red Album comes out June 3rd. I haven't lost faith in them yet!
I've been listening to a lot of newer Thrice. It's much different their old stuff, in a good way.
For my anniversary present, my wife got me an 8GB mp3 player, so my answer is: my music collection again. Or rather, my answer is not: the stupid radio.

I have my official "summer song" this year -
Fortress, by Pinback. Check it out on last.fm, fantastic road-trip song (of which I'm doing many this summer)
As for other stuff, GTA4 soundtrack has been influencing my current tastes a bit - Stevie Nicks and Hello are both gracing my iPod.
I also just saw Opeth and Three in concert in Montreal - Opeth was fantastic as usual, but I was very impressed by Three - if you like Prog Rock/Metal, you might like them.
Finally, Bluesfest is coming to Ottawa this summer so I fully intend to hit up Feist and STARS - unfortunately, I'm out of town when Metric is playing, which is always a good time. (And a good system of measurement)
Apart from that, whatever last.fm digs up, really.

I'm listening to my album over and over again, hoping to seed last.fm so that they finally have enough statistical data to have a "people who listen to this also listen to this" link.

My current playlist: The police, Slightly Stoopid, 311, Sublime, and more reggae
Concert wise, I'm pretty short stacked being in the OKC. Currently I'm trying to get some buddies to band together so we can hit up ACL before school.

The Black Keys new album, Attack & Release, is all kinds of awesome. I can't recommend it enough.
I am going to finally catch Tom Waits on his tour this summer. That will be crossing a off a huge name off my list of people I have to see live at least once.
I should also pimp my friends' band, The Hearers. They really are great, in a dark country kind of way. Fading Fast is one of my favorite songs. Check them out!

Some of the more "mainstream" albums I'm interested in for the summer:
Coldplay - Viva la Vida
Disturbed - Indestructbile
Weezer - Red Album
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III (guilty pleasure of the summer, 2008)
Alanis Morrisette - Flavors of Entanglement
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
N.E.R.D. - Seeing Sounds
Go App State
Picked up the new Portishead album, Third. It's passable. Not as good as the first two.
I'm looking forward to the new My Morning Jacket album, Evil Urges. Also, it's the 20 year anniversary of Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, and some sort of deluxe edition is rumored this year. That's one of the best albums in all music.
I'm going to see the Police and Elvis Costello this summer.

I've been listening to nothing but Lemon Demon since Christmas. He's only got three official albums out, but between main tracks and bonus MP3s embedded in the CDs, there are over a hundred tracks. Most of them are really good.
LD is a very indie one-man-band based in Kingston, MA. Heavily influenced by They Might Be Giants, but still very distinct from them. I wrote a full review of his works here in my weblog.
Damn Skippy, his second album (or fifth, depending on how you count it) is probably his best (it features Word Disassociation, which is one of my favorites. There's a video he made for the song here). But they all have something to offer.
I believe out of all hundred-and-whatever songs in his oeuvre, I only really dislike one. That's not a bad track record.
L337 is not a word. BA7F is a word.
I'm liking the new King's X.
Strangely, they're touring with a reunited Extreme this summer. King's X is always a treat live, and while I'm not much of an Extreme fan, Nuno Bettencourt is worth the price of admission for anyone who is interested in dudes who play guitar like a motherf*cker. If they make it up to Seattle or Portland I just might go.

I think I'm going through a mid-life crisis as I've been scooping up cd's off of Amazon.com from metal bands that I haven't listened to since I was in high school (some 20+ years ago). In the past couple weeks I've purchased:
Nuclear Assault - Handle With Care (eBay'ed)
Armored Saint - March of the Saint
Testament - Practice What You Preach
Anthrax - The Greater of Two Evils (newer album)
For upcoming releases, I'm stoked to get my hands on the new Rapture album, due out soon.
Didn't know what this out yet. How would you describe it?Is it more like Ogre Tones, or Ear Candy? Gretchen is one of my top favorites in high school, but I've given up another one like that.
Xbox Live: Stilgar Black
Well, it's definitely no Gretchen, but I'd still recommend it.
After a few listens I like it more than Ogre Tones, but stylistically it is probably most similar to that album. Some of the gentler, more melodic material definitely hearkens back to Ear Candy, though, and there are a couple of downright pummeling tracks that are easily the heaviest stuff they've written since Dogman. Speaking of Dogman, I've always preferred Doug as the band's "lead singer" but Ty and Jerry's songs on XV are among the strongest they've done.

Ogre was enjoyable, but I thought it could've been recorded better. There's a sound on "Alone" that annoys me that I think should've been mixed out. However, I'm now convinced to pick this up and crank up Dogman on the iPod. Thanks.

Hope you like it!

Pork and Beans sounds pretty good. If nothing else, it has an awesome video. This will be my first Weezer purchase since Pinkerton.

Sometimes you can't go back,
sometimes you can! Bush vocals on several tracks on Two Evils are awesome. I recommend We've Come For You All and the re-release of Volume 8. Awesome, awesome stuff.
MaxShrek .. looks like Jake.. drives like Elwood.
I bought and really loved everything between Gretchen and Ear Candy ... they pretty much dropped off the map for me at that point. I'm glad to hear that the new album is worth listening. When King's X is on, they hit a rock 'n roll itch that no other band can scratch.

I listen to a lot of netlabel stuff, so here is what I am listening to lately.
Rauscheffeckt: Fockig, from Suess Sauer.

It's got a nice summery sort of vibe.
DJ Side: Metatron from The Bittersweet Love EP.

Abstract, dark, Hip-Hop beats in the vein of DJ Shadow, DJ Food, etc.
Baldo-Flumo from VA Laboratorio Demensional (Fluomo 25).

This is the sort of track you might here at some late night beach party in Miami. Deep, dubby, sort of summery.
AX 11: Somewhat Pointless, off Leviathan.

It's 1:30AM, the club is dark, the room is a writhing mass of sweating bodies, and then the DJ drops this one right before last call. Epic.
I should muxtape this.
Ok, I guess I'm not done pimping. Here's a video I made for my friend's band. They are covering Gordon Lightfoot's Sundown, but they are not a cover band.
If you like this kind of dark and twisted country stuff, catch them live this summer!

Sorry, try this link. I had to take it down from Youtube, as it was a cover song.
Here's crappy live footage of them I took when I was in Lawrence a couple of weeks ago. Bad sound, bad lighting, but you kind of get the idea. There are clips of three songs on Youtube right now. But you can hear most of their songs on last.fm if you would like to really hear what they sound like.
Marc told me that they would be playing at Reggie's in Chicago. Don't know anything about the place.

I included links Johnny.
I'll make up some new names to keep you guessing.
I just picked up Death Cab for Cutie's new "Narrow Stairs". It is excellent.
Also been listening the Thrice's new stuff (also excellent if a little different), mewithoutYou's "Catch for Us the Foxes".
I'm going to pick up Showbread's two new CD's tonight.

The new Flobots album is excellent. There's not a ton of hip hop stuff I like, but these guys are great. Probably because they use real instruments.
