European GWJ - London Slap & Tickle

Since Sam's moving down, Vrikk's coming in, and the Wandering Taoist is visiting, I say we get together and have a pint.

The question is location. I'm a traditionalist, so a simple London pub would be my vote, but I'm open to suggestions.

Locations:
The Castle, High Holborn
The Melton Mowbray, High Holborn
The Anchor, Bankside
The Dean Swift, Butler's Wharf

Dates: Since WT is only in London between the 14th and 17th of June, why don't we aim for the evening of the 14th, afternoon of the 15th or possibly the evening of the 16th?

Anyone care to weigh in?

Is Ticle European (combining all the languages here) for something?

Its Estonian for 'Idiot American'.

Any of those locations are fine with me, I will be working in Holburn so will get to know the area better I guess, as for the dates, again I will be fine with those too,

Sounds good to me, but don't be surprised if I'm utterly lost about any location I'm requested to go to.

The 14th would be best for me, but the Sunday afternoon would also be OK. I wouldn't be able to make the Monday. I'll be coming in and going back on the train from Waterloo, so somewhere near there would get my vote, but if it's reasonably central then I don't really mind.

Once we all know where we are going then, we can put a little map up, what tube station is nearby etc. The 14th would be the best day by the looks of things unless there are objections as it's a saturday and we all know that the boring duties like washing and ironing blah blah stuff is best left to Sunday when there is nothing better to do.....

As for where then, my vote goes for currently the castle http://www.fullpint.com/fullpint/sho...

as it appears to be out the way, and therefore maybe slightly cheaper, but if that doesn't float anyone's boat, then once we are all there, we can move on of course.

Thoughts?

I get to ride the Tube, yay! Hopefully this isn't the weekend that I'll be in Paris.

The Castle looks fine to me.

The Castle sounds great.

My only problem with Saturdays is that I play cricket from about 2 or so till about 7. Could be a long day or no day at all, depending on the weather, but that shouldn't dictate what you guys do. I'll go with the group decision.

(I'll catch up with you as soon as I learn English.)

So we will meet at the Castle on the 14th, that's for certain?

All that would remain is the time and what colour rose to wear as we wait for the suitors to turn up!!! Are people happy to start early or not?

Haakon7, I dare say if you have a mobile handy, I could PM you my number and therefore whatever happens you could stay informed of progress etc. Hell, for all we know, we may end up in that HMV gaming centre playing Team Fortress 2 till our eyes bleed, or laughing at various people wandering the streets. Who knows?

OK, 14th then, I'll try and find the pub on the map. I think we'll be living somewhere around Camden Town, which looks like it's quite a way to Holborn. No matter, the pint with goodjers is worth it.

I'm OK with starting early, we arrive at 8:00 AM, need to stop by our friends where we're staying and after that I guess I'm free for the day. I'll try and plan the walking around London so as to be as close to Holborn as possible before we start. I'm taking my cellphone with me, so I can send Haakon7 my number to stay in touch.

We will most certainly take my avatar turtle with us, so I can take it as a sign for recognizing me. Just for the love of God don't make me lose it while drinking or my girlfriend will be very sad. Me too, actually.

I'm perfectly happy with an early start. I'll probably have to duck out relatively early to catch a train home anyway.

So about about high noon (or 12pm, whichever is easier to understand) therefore gives people at least half the day to do whatever and we can have a jolly good nosh-up somewhere too.

If I leave around 8 or so that'll give me plenty of time to figure my way around.. unless, of course, I can find a way to phone you people.

Sam, as the paterfamilias, should probably get everyone's mobile phone numbers.

so far then we have confirmed basically from reading the thread:

wanderingtaoist
DudleySmith
Vrikk
Haakon7
samfisher

If anyone else wishes to make their presence known by all means!

I have messaged a couple of people my mobile number already and will do others in a little while. Hmm, never been the paterfamilias before...

I'm not sure if I'll be available at noon already, but I'll try to. I have samfisher's contact, so if I'm late, he'll know. And Vrikk, don't worry, London is quite manageable, provided you have a map of the city and the tube.

Photos people, take plenty of photos.

I'm not coming this time, but flying over to London for a weekend is on the right side of crazy down the line.

Just checked my schedule and the Paris weekend is the 13th through the 15th, so score! I can do this : )

Excitement.

Here's a quick idea: anyone have a Nintendo DS? How about bringing it to the meeting, so we can have an ad-hoc LAN party, if we feel like it? I have a number of single-cart multiplayer games.

Sounds interesting! I may well be able to butt-in, depending on family commitments.

DSes could by the GWJ equivalent of a red carnation...

I'm in London! Jetlag is killing me (woo no sleep!), and I'm hating the English keyboard, but besides that this place rocks. I am, however, already ridiculously lost and I've not even stepped outside on my own yet. Someone will have to tell me approximately how long it will take me to get to our meeting place too since I have no real time sense here. I'm staying at the Atlantic House, which is in the Royal Borough of -mumblemumble-. It's near or in the Central London area.

You already write well enough. Time to jump in the water if you're ever going to learn to swim!

Correction! I'm in Kensington, right on Glocester Road. I'm right next to the French ambassador's place, and about 2 feet from Hyde Park. How far is that from where we are meeting?

Alas! Family commitments have intervened. Have one for me... I demand that it's an Aspalls (If they have it).

Hello, I have internet again and I am down in London at last!!

Take the Gloucester Road Tube to Holborn (Piccadilly Line) and then move along to the Chancery Line station either by walking or switching for one stop on the central line, it's down a little street across the road http://www.fullpint.com/fullpint/sho...

I have no true idea how long that takes to get there, maybe 20 minutes?

Should be easy enough, samfisher. I took my virgin run on the Tube last night with my freshly bought Oyster Card. I went from the Kensington stop to Picadilly Square I believe it was. I then walked to the Zoo Bar where I got hammered as I danced increasingly better off of Red Bull and Vodka. I also found it funny they played a lot of NSYNC techno.

Wait, is this meeting this actual weekend? I thought it was the weekend after? I'm in France starting Friday morning and probably won't be back until Sunday.

yep, this weekend fella!
