As with any complex new game, there are plenty of things that are not documented or obvious. This is a place to post some of the things you found out yourself, that others may benefit from.

To start with, I found out by accident that you can actually resize your GUI additional skill bars (the ones you enable from the Interface options). If you click on top/left of the bar, it will toggle it between horizontal/vertical and at the opposite end of it is a grabber that you can use to resize the size of the bar, adding many new slots.

Tired of running around not being able to see who is your in group and who is not in those crowded areas?
Try this:
Go to Settings/Interface Options
Enable the Show Vicinity Player Name
Change the Show Vicinity Tags to ALL
Done

You may also want to enable Show Vicinity Player Health.

I've learned a couple things so far that have really helped.

1) If you playing a ranger, when you get that first bow and you are in town, don't just decide to try it out where you are. Mine targeted a guard, it went downhill after that.
2) Yeah! You dinged and got a new level! You also forget that you are in a dungeon alone and start checking out how to distribute points. Repops when you are unprepared stinks
3) Alt-Z removes the interface for screenshots. Z also is the default to strafe left. If you are zoomed in all the way, looking out over the ledge to get a great screenshot, be aware of how close to the edge you really are! Removing the interface also tapped me to the left and had me leap off of a very high embankment.

Remember to use the double tap system! I always have to remind myself that this is more interactive than your typical MMO.

Double tap left = harder to hit with magic
Double tap back = harder to hit with melee
Double tap forward = your attacks have a chance to stun the opponent

They do take a little bit of stamina.

Also, make sure to put a bunch of points in running speed and endurance if you are in a PvP server - not just to run away and hide from some jerk, but to also chase down said jerk and slam them when your posse arrives.

Or, if you roll as an assassin, max out your hiding and skulk points and, if possible, gather hiding-boosting gear. Not only are you harder to hit when people don't even know you're there, but if you can sneak up behind a guy you can practically get a 1-hit kill if you target an unshielded section. Dirty? Yeah, but you a bloody (no pun intended) assassin. Dirty is what you do

Rabbit did an experiment with Run Speed last night. He added 200 points to it and basically raced a group made with no points, sprinting and jogging both. It was a tie. Whats up with that?

My tip is for group/guild chat.

type /gu blah blah blahh for guild chat
type /g blah blah blah for group chat

Its clunky, but it beats right clicking the tab and changing the 'talking to' channel.

Anyone know the /loc command in this game?

Also (small tip for newbies... lame for vets), kill everything you see on your way to and from quests. Its amazing how fast you level in this game.

The runspeed thing: we did a race last night, both sprinting and non sprinting. I had over 200 points in running, he had NONE. We were dead even to exhaustion.

What am I missing?

Rabbit,

Dumping 200 pts into run speed should make you much faster than someone with none. It seems pointless to put points into it if it doesn't make you any faster.

Thanks for the heads up on that one, I'm gonna hold off more points for now.

Double tab right does the same thing but other side?
Double tab forward, does this mean the next hit or next combo can cause a stun?

One of the FAQs on the official boards (sorry, can't remember where exactly I read it) said that it's a 1% increase per 100 points, but it's not confirmed... if true you might not be able to tell much difference until 500 points or so.

Seen some people with it maxed out and they're... well kinda like rabbits If you can't slow/root/knock them down they're gone.

Combos...

combos that are different levels have different timers.

So you can take your strongest combo and put one or 2 different levels on your toolbar. that way while one is cooling down you can still execute the other. You do use more stamina/mana doing this, but your DPS jumps way up.

Edit: Except for utility spells like knockdown or pindowns and the like. They keep the same timer regardless of level.

Make sure you pick up the 6 tradeskill quests the moment you hit 20. Then, level and quest as you normally would, but every time you run past a resource node, give it a hit if it has something left in it. That way, you'll collect all the necessary items without having to deal with searching for non-empty nodes when you actually want to level your tradeskills.

In the same line of reasoning, make sure you always note any resource nodes you find by marking them on your map (right click on the map or minimap to enter map comment).

Actually Shade, I think just a left click works as well. At least on your own bars.

Great tips everyone! Is the active block button even useful for anything? All it seems to do is eat up stamina while block a bit better then you have no stamina to do anything else. I guess I am not getting the strategy of it.

I just hit 20 the last time I played, and am in Conal Valley area. Where do I pick up these 6 tradeskill quests?

Also, does anyone know if there is a line to add to some .ini file to make the executable skip the darn intro videos?

You need to travel to one of the resource areas, Poitain, Purple Lotus Swamps, or Lachish. The trainers are in the town there. Here's a good link to resource training.

I got sick of the 6 quests taking up quest log space and deleted them, however I'm still able to gather sandstone/copper/etc. Maybe it's a glitch, but it's nice to be able to work on the quests without them clogging up the works.

Good idea about marking the map, hadn't thought of that! Sometimes the obvious isn't.

No use trying the client will just redl the videos every time you load. It only takes 2.7 secs to click past them all anyway.

that totally depends on your system... Hopefully for me it will be less than 2.7s this time next week, but right now my current machine is hurting

Having finally gone into a real instance, I got some advice. Unless you're a tank, you can circle around the mob to get a completely different assignment of shieldings. What were 3 shields on the right from the front will be 3 shields to the left from behind. Under certain angles the mob won't even have any shields and you can go at them with impunity. Always remember to position yourself around the mob so as to have the shield arrangements in a most beneficial position.

This is especially important as a assassin in stealth. Very often if you can manage to position yourself within the 180 degree arc behind the mob (or unsuspecting soon-to-be-PvP opponent) you'll find that their head has no shielding to speak of. Ever wonder how assassins manage to nearly 1-hit kill lower lvl opponents? This is how.

In the Field of the Dead when it rains the corner of your cape is visible when the rain hits it even after you stealth. Very noticable when up against a dark background. So if you have want to stay hidden, remove the cloak.

nope not yet. I thought it might have been intentional. You get popped out of stealth in broad daylight thought this was just another hazard to being stealthed.

If you find yourself very high up, and want to get to the bottom of the mountain you're on without dealing with the mobs along the switchbacks, swim down a waterfall. You can fall the whole distance and won't take any damage so long as you land in the water.
