Need advice: Buying a DS Lite but what games?
Friday, May 23rd, 2008 - 12:57am
Wehay!
I'm finally putting down some cash and getting me a DS lite but now I need some games to play on it.
So far my, MUST-HAVE list contains:
Zelda: Hourglass
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Pokemon (Whatever the latest one is)
Now I'm also gonna get a couple of GBA games I love...
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission (see a trend?)
Zelda: Minish Cap...
So my question is, what other games on either GBA or DS MUST I get? And which ones can I seriously consider?
Thanks in advance.

You HAVE to get the new Advance Wars : Days Of Ruin. Maybe a Final Fantasy game or two. They last a long ass time to beat so it's a good time waster.
Hotel Dusk 215.

Personally, I would knock Metroid Prime: Hunters down from Must-Have to Buy-It-If-It's-Less-Than-$15. It's okay, but not really that great.
My personal must-have list for the DS (not listing those you've already listed - oh, and for Pokemon you might want to wait for Pokemon Platinum to come out[which will probably be sometime next year, unless you decide to import the Japanese version this fall when it comes out]):
Brain Age 2
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol
Clubhouse Games
Cooking Mama
Elite Beat Agents
Kirby Canvas Curse
New Super Mario Bros
Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! (Japanese import)
Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 (sequel to above, both are great rhythm games)
Phoenix Wright series
Scurge: Hive (decent game that can be had for under $10 - semi-Metroidish, albeit isometric as opposed to side-scrolling or FPS)
Final Fantasy IV DS (not out yet, but will be released late next month)
And for GBA:
Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hands
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrows (get this first before Dawn of Sorrows, as Dawn is the direct sequel to Aria)
Drill Dozer
Final Fantasy VI Advance
Golden Sun
Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald (since you'll be able to transfer your pokemon from these iterations to whatever version of the DS game you get)
Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green
Super Mario Advance 1-4
Sword of Mana

I second Kirby Canvas Curse, Phoenix Wrights and Advance Wars and add Meteos. There's no better puzzler for the DS so far.
For GBA, don't forget Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and/or Tactics Ogre. Both will provide you with months of deep gameplay if you're into strategy RPGs.

My wife just bought me a DS the other week(thank you federal government), I'm considering buying a R4 cart so I can listen to podcasts, and what not on the DS. Does anyone have any experience with the R4's or is there a better solution I should look into?

Grab a copy of Ninja Gadian and Professor Layton. Eclectic, no? Those two are awesome as is Advance Wars Days of Ruin. Finally no DS owner should be with out Mario Kart DS
I know there are a handful of other threads on this issue... let me see if I can dig up some links...

Advance Wars games, Mario Kart DS, and New SMB are my top picks.
This thread hasnt been updated in a while but there are a lot of good comments on what DS games people like and why - worth a few minutes to browse through.
Personally Im a big fan of Panzer Tactics, Prof Layton, FF III and Clubhouse Games

Lunar knights is a little played gem, ( think zelda meets metal gear)
Its pretty hard to go wrong with the Ace attorney games.
Warioware has given my girlfriend more enjoyment than i have.
I am a huge fan of Professor Layton and the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game (if you like Diablo style dungeon loot fests).

I think the battery drain would be worth it. Where did you get yours?

I got mine from a seller on Amazon.com.
I am pretty happy with it, but you might want to consider one of the more recent cards that support high capacity SD cards and have better compatibility. The R4DS team is pretty good at updating the firmware to be able to run most every ROM, but lately the number of games that don't work on "day 1" are increasing. Also, if you plan to run a lot of homebrew, the R4 probably isn't your best choice either.
check www.gbatemp.net for reviews (the CycloDS EVOLUTION seems like the current best of the crop).
As an aside, I'll just mention again that there really isn't a very simple way to rip your own DS carts (unlike the total ease of ripping PSP games). What that means is that you're getting yourself into a grey area here if you download ROMs for games you already own. I feel justified in doing so, but your mileage may vary.

Just got an email from Gamestop saying that FFIV DS will be out on July 23rd. I'm definitely looking forward to that one!

No, seriously! Hotel Dusk 215! It's especially great if you're also looking for a really good book. That's meant to be a compliment towards the game. It's very much like playing a really fun noir-style detective novel, for lack of a better description. Despite being an old-school adventure game at heart, it has a really unique feel to it all.

Thanks a ton guys!!!
Looks like I'm gonna have to research my way through the HUGE list you've suggested and pick and choose =) I WISH I had that much money
Apologies for the duplicate thread, I'm still working my way round the boards :S

If you want to try out a big list of games to see if they're worth picking up, Gamefly is your friend. It's a bit pricey, but even the multiple-games-out-at-a-time subscriptions are less per month than the cost of one game you turn out not to like.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

An easier way to go about this would probably be for you to tell us what types of games you generally like... Also, keep in mind that games one person says are "essential" might not be games that you will enjoy-- many DS games are can be an acquired taste (while I enjoy the Ace Attorney series, other people find them tedious).

You can also check out resale values at Gamestop before you buy new. I don't know what the DS resale values are like, but it's often 50% on console games. Alternately, you can buy used and return within a week for nothing.

Hotel Dusk 215! How many times do I have to say this!? You're not listening! I don't want my bill now! I wanted it 15 minutes ago! How do you not understand this?! I shouldn't have to put up with this! I'm not being unreasonable! I'm a paying customer, and I should get my bill when I want it! I shouldn't even still be here! I should be away from here! I should be 20 minutes away from here! ARGH!

You gotta at least get the title right.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215.
It's not the 214th sequel of some earlier game.
Teasing aside, I have to recommend a new DS owner check out Professor Layton and the Curious Village. It's the only game in a long time that has made me bother picking up a Nintendo DS.
However, I MUST give Anno 1701 a try.

I was wondering if and when someone was going to catch that. Shows that someone else here played it, possibly?

For about 5 minutes. Interesting concept, but for something with so much reading, I.... can't..... abide..... text....... that's...... so..... much..... slower...... than...... my...... reading....... speed.........

I think you can speed up the text. If not, you can always hit yourself in the head with a hammer until your reading speeding matches the text speed.

I agree with many of the suggestions here. I'd also throw Picross into the mix if you like puzzles - it's sort of like picture Soduku.
So I made the big purchase. Hooray! Black DS Lite with Pokemon Diamond for AU$199... which, i think, is a very good deal. Bit shattered though, The original deal had Professor Layton instead of Pokemon, but they were all out of that =( Oh well.
This is a very good point. It pretty much has to be purchases all the way.
I pretty much like everything so a gigantic list is good for me so I can work my way through them, picking and choosing.
I think I'll be trying to find a New Super Mario Bros asap, as well as a couple of the GBA games, specifically the 2 metroid games.
I'm really enjoying it so far but I'm not sure how long a typical, fully charged battery lasts? Any ideas?
