Obama's choice of a VP

In thread, we speculate what Obama's eventual VP pick may be.

According to unofficial statements from DNC, Obama began the search for the potential ticket partners.

Let's get the short list going:

* Chuck Hagel
* Bill Richardson
* Jim Webb

Outlandish list:

* Al Gore
* Howard Dean
* John Edwards

I'd be very thrilled to see Jim Webb on the ticket. That would take a lot of "lookit me I am a war veteran" (actually all of it) from McCain's appeal.

Quote:

The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb's platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex that appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers. Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade that detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel. Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search that yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

I've been for Webb for a long time. And he can write, too. However, in a recent interview with Terry Glass, he indicated strongly that he likes being a senator so much, he'd probably turn down the VP position.

Only if Obama's looking to create a theocracy. Huckabee is the guy who wants to amend the Constitution "so it's in God's standards", which he feels perfectly equipped to judge. He'd be a huge step in the wrong direction.

Webb wrote books and can speak Vietnamese. I think it may be too elitist, in current climate?

Regarding ruling out of a VP post -- of course that's what he'd say. Unless you have a standing new job offer, you don't say you're even considering leaving your present one.

I saw him on Olberman last night plugging his bill for a new G.I. Bill. It is clear that he actually understands the sacrifice our men and women in the armed forces have made, and exactly how we should repay them.

Quote:
The bill would provide service members who have served since September 11, 2001 with improved educational benefits similar to those provided to World War II-era veterans. The House companion bill (H.R 2702) was introduced by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) and currently has 96 cosponsors. [For a full list of co-sponsors, visit: http://webb.senate.gov/pdf/s22hr2702cosponsors.html]

“After six and a half years of service, our nation’s men and women in uniform deserve a GI Bill that rewards their service and invests in their future,” said Senator Webb. “I see the educational benefits in this bill as crucial to a service member’s readjustment to civilian life and as a cost of war that should receive the same priority that funding the war has received the last five years.”

“The tragic loss of life and limb we have suffered thus far underscores the level of commitment and patriotism that these warriors possess,” said Senator Warner. “We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude for their selfless service. Our country must provide our service members with a GI Bill fit for a time of war, just as it did for me so many years ago.”

For some reason, McCain cannot find it in his heart to support this bill, despite a pretty strong contingent of Republicans that have signed on in bot the House and the Senate.

No offense, but if you've ever heard Webb interviewed, you'd realize he says what he means. He doesn't go for that kind of deception. It's not naive of me - he's a Marine, he speaks his mind and damn the consequences.

I don't know much about Webb, but his big appeal is mostly to a demographic that will be about impossible for Obama to win. Consider Webb strong on national security and military issues, but the people for whom military issues are paramount probably still go with McCain. On economic and social issues, Webb doesn't seem to bring much to the table for important constituencies in the democratic coalition.

Webb introduced the long overdue "G.I. Bill 2.0". McCain voted against it. I think it closes the book on the argument with the active service members right there. Reap, correct me if I am wrong.

Even assuming a lot of other people in your position share this view, the military vote is a lot smaller percentage of the electorate than the militarist vote.

How about this guy for the Veepstakes:

Quote:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a SEAL team leader during action against enemy aggressor (Viet Cong) forces. Acting in response to reliable intelligence, Lt. (j.g.) Kerrey led his SEAL team on a mission to capture important members of the enemy's area political cadre known to be located on an island in the bay of Nha Trang. In order to surprise the enemy, he and his team scaled a 350-foot sheer cliff to place themselves above the ledge on which the enemy was located. Splitting his team in 2 elements and coordinating both, Lt. (jg.) Kerrey led his men in the treacherous downward descent to the enemy's camp. Just as they neared the end of their descent, intense enemy fire was directed at them, and Lt. (jg.) Kerrey received massive injuries from a grenade that exploded at his feet and threw him backward onto the jagged rocks. Although bleeding profusely and suffering great pain, he displayed outstanding courage and presence of mind in immediately directing his element's fire into the heart of the enemy camp. Utilizing his radio, Lt. (jg.) Kerrey called in the second element's fire support, which caught the confused Viet Cong in a devastating crossfire. After successfully suppressing the enemy's fire, and although immobilized by his multiple wounds, he continued to maintain calm, superlative control as he ordered his team to secure and defend an extraction site. Lt. (jg.) Kerrey resolutely directed his men, despite his near unconscious state, until he was eventually evacuated by helicopter. The havoc brought to the enemy by this very successful mission cannot be over-estimated. The enemy soldiers who were captured provided critical intelligence to the allied effort. Lt. (jg.) Kerrey's courageous and inspiring leadership, valiant fighting spirit, and tenacious devotion to duty in the face of almost overwhelming opposition sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Speaking from a personal perspective; that's one of many reasons why I'm not voting for him. You want to send my stupid ass to Iraq for a hundred years, fine. But you better be ready to foot the costs.

I need to see if I can dig up a transcript but Tommy Franks and Peter Pace were interviewed on C-SPAN and Gen. Franks just blasted the government for lacking the true political will to fight.

I don't assume that other servicemembers do because I know they all don't. I never claimed to speak for others, only myself.
