Penny Arcade Adventures: Catch-All

It's out today. Going to purchase it once I get home from work. Anyone else going to try it out? I like the looks of it.

Oh, c'mon. You suck one c*ck and you're forever known as a c*cksucker.

I'm planning on trying it out, but it won't be this week in all likelihood. I'm anxious to hear impressions from others though.

I played through the demo, without sound. I probably lost a lot of the atmosphere in doing so, but it did put the focus on the actual gameplay. I found the fights annoying with far too much mouse clicking going on to do the basic attacks. In between the fights when you were running around, smashing crates and picking up stuff the game would pause and show the item you picked up in the middle of the screen messing up any kind of flow you could have had. Had it not been for the promise of PA hijinks I would just forget all about it.
Now I'm holding off for impressions of the non-gameplay parts, since it's going to have to be the writing, story, voice acting(?), etc. that sells it. This is pretty much what I expected anyway.

Oh, heck yeah! I look forward to hearing impressions, as well. I'll probably download it tonight.

I'll probably pick it up.

The demo does not impress me.
Love the PA comic strip, but not so much the game. I'll be passing.

I've purchased it and will download when I get home. Leaving work in a few minutes.

I played the demo for a solid forty-five minutes or so, and found myself genuinely amused. The writing is what you'd expect from TB, I think, and the humor is everything Penny Arcade's always been about. As for the gameplay, i think I can see where everyone's coming from -- the interruptions for every item pickup probably will get tedious with a full-on playthrough -- but the rest of it has enough charm that I'm willing to bite, myself.
1,600 points does feel a might steep, but I also feel like part of that extra cost might go towards promoting new, downloadable content in this format. I'm a big fan of this general concept, and I'd love to see other, smaller developers using this as a possible venue.

For those who are interested, it weighs in at: 209mb.
I can't wait, looks so cool and i'm a big fan of PA...
Will post thoughts and screens as it happens.

It is a bit steep in price but I picked it up on XBLA and I'm liking it so far. It's an interesting take on the whole RPG idea. The writing is good and the characters so far have been pretty amusing. I think it'll be good but I'd definitely suggest the demo if you aren't sure.

I bought it but the version I downloaded was around a 165 megs
the only reason I downloaded it was because I had an 1600 points card to use but 1600 points is at least 400 points to much for it but we will see, I look forward to trying it so my impressions are incoming.
I definitely would not have bought it if I didn't have this extra point card here, I really hope this is not a sign of things to come because I really don't think so far any XBLA game is worth 1200 points let alone 1600 points.

On the 360 I certainly don't have the
issue. The actions are mapped to the face buttons. A for items, X for attack, Y for special attack, and either trigger to block. This works really well for the rather frenetic combat. Well, frenetic for turn-based, anyway. I can see where using the mouse would be annoying to some.
1600 points is money whether it's on a card or otherwise. Your outlook and actions aren't consistent.

Are people still debating the price? Not debating, I lack a term for it. You are the same people who dropped over a hundred dollars for cat helmets and duffel bags, right?
I think the demo was a mistake, a launch one at least. With an episodic title, it offers too much of the game, not only that it offers too much chance on a small title to turn people off quickly.
Played the 360 demo today. You'll have a lot of trouble reading stats if you have a standard definition TV.

Installing the full version now! PA is one of the few brands I trust enough to plunk down 20$ without bothering with the demo.

That may be the case with some, but definitely wasn't with me. I would not have purchased this without a demo.
I'm curious about the game mechanic of having the Item timer run much faster than the Attack timer is a new innovation, or is this old hat for turn based games? Categorizing games by original features is some kind of neurosis; but as far as neuroses go that's not too bad, I think.

The pseudo turn based combat is kind of odd. I think I would have much preferred an old school style actual turn based system, where things wouldn't happen until I committed to an action.

Kyrator: lvl 63 night elf rogue - Blackhand

I like this a lot. The mouse interface on my Mac was fiddly, but I found the Xbox controls easier to deal with, so with a hint of guilt I got the Xbox one.
Xbox Live: psu13, PSN: psu_13
Yeah, the combat is very old-school Final Fantasy in style. As in turn-based but there's an initiative bar to pay attention to. Not too far into it, although I'm already impressed by the production values and artistic flourishes which are much higher than I was expecting.
I got the PC one, and I can see the mouse-clicking to get annoying after a while, but I'll live with it.

The battle system reminds me of Anachronox, which is a huge compliment, coming from me; Anachronox has my favorite turn-based battle system ever. Being able to see enemies before I fight them is huge, and I like the initiative bar a lot more than any of the similar systems in any Final Fantasy. I never understood those well enough to actually know if there's any difference between the two, but there ya have it, nonetheless.

I can't believe people are still complaining about the price.
I like it so far, but the psuedo-turned based combat is hard to get used to. Also, I know I don't have the most high quality TV but on SDTV it's damn hard to read dialogue.
The game is 100% pure atmosphere and the writing is top notch. I can definitely see Tycho's influence. I think the gameplay is lacking, or maybe it's just because I can barely read anything.
Seems promising so far.

I'm hoping that it's not as bad as the mouse interface is sounding.
Or that maybe I can use a controller plugged into my comp... No 360 to speak of =(
I kinda would have liked it to be on Steam but I think because it's for Windows, Mac and Linux they wanted to keep it a universal delivery method.
I meant the Windows version, did you mean the 360 version?

I have to say, after playing the demo I'm really disappointed in the PC port. I get pretty bad tearing on the cutscenes, even after going in and turning on Force VSync in the control panel, and there's no way to configure controls. As far as I can tell, the controls are mouse-only on PC, but it doesn't behave at all like they were designed with the mouse in mind. You can't just click an enemy to attack like in every other mouse-controlled RPG, you have to click the attack button, and then click on the enemy, over and over again, every turn. There aren't even keyboard hotkeys, at least as far as I can tell. But then, just to keep you guessing, it goes ahead and makes you use keys that you can't reassign for things like blocking that could have easily been mapped to, say, the right mouse button.
The game itself seems like a pretty cool old-school RPG, and the writing (what I've seen of it so far) is enough to sell me, but why is every little thing so annoying? Just starting the game angers me. When you open it, you get a main menu in a window. When you click "Play," it goes fullscreen and plays a long, unskippable cutscene (all of the cutscenes are unskippable, unless I missed something while pounding every key on my keyboard), followed by a different main menu with the same buttons on it, in fullscreen this time.
I think I'm going to have to buy this one for my Xbox, much as I hate playing single-player games in the living room.
I'm like a flashing lightning and a rolling thunder, I'm like a stepping razor
I can't believe people are still commenting about people commenting on the price!
Just got done playing the demo... very nice production values. The create a character is pretty limited, but it's kind of cool to see it so well integrated into the rest of the game's graphics. I also like the whole "Arthur Dent"-i-ness of the story.
Not a big fan of the constant item pop-ups.
Also not a huge fan of the combat system. I think my problem with it is that it's "turn based," yet NOT. Unlike something like GRANDIA that also uses attack timers, the PA game doesn't automatically switch you to the person who's "ready" to fight. Not a huge deal, but sort of inconvenient having to keep track of that myself.
There's also, as far as I can tell, no way to access your inventory when not in combat.
I'm using a 27" SDTV with component cables, and the combat text IS pretty small.
Additional +5 bonus points to the game for having a freely rollable d20 in the office.

I'll probably pick this up, just because $20 isn't much, and it's the only commercial Linux game I've seen this year, though the demo is waiting for me to play at home so I might give that a go first.

Played for an hour or so tonight. Initial impressions with the PC version - I like it, but much of what I want done has already been said. I haven't experienced any tearing, but remapping the space bar should have been a no-brainer. Combat is rudimentary, but so far presents enough options that I think the strategy could present itself. I'm not sold on the supermove minigames - they're easy enough to make the process redundant, quite frankly (like pipedream in bioshock).
The humour and style are there, which was all I'm really concerned with. Right now, it's good enough for a lark between GTA sessions.

I got it last night. The graphics and the writing are extremely well done, and it really does look and feel like the comics.
I'm still not totally comfortable with the combat (again, I tend to flap a bit trying to select an attack and then realising that I need to block and screwing it up), and there must be elements that I'm missing as to strategy. The key to doing really well at the combat seems to be blocking, which I find quite difficult (you essentially have to learn at which point in the attack animation you need to press the block button) You pick up a lot of buffing, debuffing and healing items. Your actions charge up one at a time, first an item use, then a normal attack, then a special attack. In theory you should be able to keep one guy charging his special attack up whilst the others use normal attacks, but at the stage I've got to (I'm generally fighting 4-way combinations of hobos and FFs) I generally need to use everything I've got just to not die.

The writing and atmosphere is top notch but I have been having some glitches with the demo that are putting me off from buying this game and I really want to buy it. One time my character fell through the ground into the void and another time my mouse cursor completely disappeared preventing me from doing anything. But so far the third time I played the demo everything ran smooth but I ran out of time to play and they don't let you save in the demo. I don't if I should go ahead and buy it or not?
Wow, sounds to me they made some very basic mistakes for the PC version. Like the need to click attack before you can attack a enemy, that's so basic I would not think they would make that mistake. The item pop-ups also sound like sh*t, I actually expected them to create perfect controls, because that is always the thing everybody most bitches about. Now, to download the demo myself and play it.
