I just bought this tonight, but considering that I have to get up and drive an hour to work in 4 hrs, I probably could use the sleep instead.

What surprised me was that everyplace I called this last week was sold out on preorders (that they were accepting, at least), but when I went to the Walmart near me for a midnight release, almost nobody showed up. Even with several people buying 2 copies, there were at least 8 copies left from the total of 31 that they claimed to have in stock. I'm very much looking forward to trying this (and picking up We Ski) and I think it will be a lot of fun, I was just surprised. I don't usually get caught up in the hype, maybe this was an exception...

Maybe that's indicative of Nintendo's base with the Wii? Sure, I love going to midnight premiers, grabbing games during a midnight launch, or going to midnight sales. I can see how that might change with a family and a steady job though.

That said I'm passing on Wii Fit for a while. It's a bit expensive for a gimmicky pad imo, and unlike the gimmicky Wii I don't need it to play Zelda and Mario games.

Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.

For clarification, "bnpederson" is pronounced "Brian."

I got it for the wife last week. It is appalling for your self esteem if you aren't thin. It depicts me as a beach ball with tiny arms and legs, and makes combinations elephant sounds and creaky honkytonk when my Mii moves around. Whilst I wouldn't claim to be a beanpole, I think it's being a bit harsh. I was off it for a few days (doing things like laying a floor and decorating my new house extension), and when I came back my BMI had gone up, and it started hassling me as to why ("Midnight Snack?")

The games are a bit thin, but do the job they are designed for. I'd say only buy it if you actually want to use it as a fitness device.

It will do good to heart and head

What I miss is a full schedule of fitness exercises. I would love to be able to select something like "train shoulders", and then my Wii would just make a sequence of all exercises involving my shoulders, and then have me do them. But there is nothing like that in there. Now you have to select every exercise yourself, and go through those typical Nintendo menu's to get there. Like after a exercise, it says retry or quit, can't it just freaking quit and if I want to retry I could just select the same exercise again. I feel at least 25% of the time playing with Wii fit is taken by navigating menu's and pushing buttons to get to a exercise.

Also, enough with the freaking unlocks, damn how I hate unlocks. I bought the game, gave you the money, now give me the full game please!

That aside, I do like the Wii Fit. Especially those Yoga exercises that stretch you back, that feels good after sitting all day. It also gets people off the couch and moving around, so that's a great plus.

This game actually HAD a midnight "launch"? This strikes me as very odd.

"Damn! I just can't wait 8 more hours to do some yoga stretches! Gotta have it NOWWWW!"

... or was it just that people thought this would be impossible to find?

I think that's why few people were there, SommerMatt. It was great for me, personally, because I couldn't go anywhere during the day (job) to pick it up, and I was afraid it would sell out due to all the preorders/buzz I was hearing about it. At this point, I'm thinking I was overreacting, and maybe I could have gone somewhere this afternoon to get it.

Also, I'm going on vacation starting tomorrow, and I wanted to be able to bring it with. I'm bringing the Wii anyway for some family fun (Wii Sports, Boom Blox, etc), so this should fit in well.

Why would a fitness game have unlockables? That seems braindead.

A fitness game is a much better game to have unlockables in. As opposed to other games, we're you're just increasing play time to unlock content, there is the potential to ensure that you're instructing the player in basic exercise and fundemental techniques that they may need later. Especially for the Yoga exercises.

Got it, played around with it for about an hour and it's great fun. It made me realize just how awful my balance is though, since some of the games seem to require slight changes in stance instead of full on flailing (like I usually, gracefully do). For a few of the games, there's a little gauge on the screen that more or less show how you're currently balanced, and personally it's not something I've ever put much thought into. However, after doing a few of the exercises and games, I'm impressed by how quickly I'm actually thinking about my balance and posture after a few of those minigames. I can definitely see how a few more sessions with Wii Fit would help this awareness become second nature, and I think that's pretty neat. I might have more to post later, but for now those are the impressions that I got from that quick session.

Oh, and both the EB in the mall and the WalMart were completely sold out: this is one time where I'm actually happy I preordered.

God, the developers must have tested the hell out of these things. I was having trouble with one of the yoga moves so I cheated on the last two reps, which the instructor automatically called me on.

So, it says I'm fat (no surprise there), but it also says my Wii Fit Age is 33, only five years off. I expected 83 or something.

I'm really excited to have finally gotten this game. My mom was watching me play and wanted to join in the fun--she was laughing at me getting hit with shoes and pandas. So I got her Mii registered and she can now join in the fun. Not to mention, it's a great way for us to game together. Otherwise it's just WiiSports, which she loves, but she hurt her shoulder so we can't do too much until it's back in working order.

A lot of the minigames are interesting. I kind of like the unlockables. Makes me feel like I have a goal I can strive for when I play. And with a long weekend, I think I'll have plenty of time to try it out and unlock some more things.

Granted... I don't need this game, but hey, I figured I might as well get it so that I can tell other kids at school about it. XD We share our gaming knowledge in my Anime Club when we're watching shows or playing a few rounds of Brawl, Naruto 4 (in Japanese), and now Mario Kart too.

First impressions (after about 30 min):

Brain Age is a very good analogy to this game. It's not much of a game in the videogame sense, but if you want to keep yourself entertained while doing balance/aerobic exercise, it is awesome. Like dhaelis said, it makes you really think about your balance, and it's amazing how accurate it is at knowing where you are in a stance and how well you're doing. The audio and visual cues that go along with breathing are a very good aid, and the trainer that's demonstrating and talking to you is a nice help, and not horribly mean like the talking balance board (when you do your daily checkup). It doesn't exaggerate your 'age' like Brain Age does. Seems like it's usually within 5 to 10 years, and actually measures your physical skill using your age as a base.

I could really see the strength, yoga, and aerobic exercises being a great way to fit in a quick workout and be entertained, I'm really hoping there is a way to create a workout and have the exercises automatically chain together later. Even if there isn't, it's a good excuse to get active, and it actually monitors your form, not that it's any replacement for a real class or trainer.

The board seems VERY responsive and accurate. I played the skiing minigame within Wiifit, and it could easily tell when I was leaning to either side (to steer) or when I was leaning forward vs back (to judge speed). I could see how this could easily be converted into kickass skiing/snowboarding/skateboarding games. I'm having visions of grinding on a pole and actually having to keep my weight within a certain ratio of right to left (exactly like the first exercises the wiifit puts you through).

The unlockable content does start with the easier games/exercises and move towards the more difficult ones, but overall it's kind of obnoxious that you can't just go play everything right away if you wanted to. The emphasis seems more on making you 'earn' it and put in playing time than on teaching you the fundementals. But I that's just my opinion.

Note, I do not have any yoga background nor any kong fu ir martial arts stuff in my past. But I do love the yoga exercises. The assistant makes it very clear how you should do the exercise, and you can easily follow his/her moves. I really love the back stretching stuff after a hard day of work. It also makes you very aware of how your balance is.

Also the muscle training is pretty good, it's fun to notice that you actually only need your body to work out, and all that fitness school crap is not needed. (although I'm sure they have their separate benefits) If you do them well it's pretty hard work, and I can imagine you can really get into better shape if you went at it seriously.

I'm not very stoked on the aerobic. Just not my cup of tea I think. My girlfriend does love them, especially those step exercises.

Then I just want to add that you shouldn't buy this for the minigames. They are fun, but not awesome fun. You can't escape the fact that you're still standing on a balance board. It feels a bit more distant then Wii sports because of that. It's more gimmicky in my eyes, where Wii sports was more a full integration of game and Wiimote.

The main part I think, is that it gets people moving, which is great. But the hardest thing will be, like with every sport lazy people try to do, is to keep them coming back to it. Wii fit does try to keep you coming back by telling you that you will improve if you do the exercises every day. The assistants approach you in a positive way, which is good. But it in the end I think it will depend if the person playing likes numbers. Because that is what Wii fit does best, making it tangible to see that you are improving. They do this with the scores you get from each exercise, and the competative people (like me) will try to beat their girlfriends high score every time. Also the diagram at the start up screen really conveys your progress very well which is a great way to make people play more.

Yes, the ability to set 2 week/1 month goals and have it watch your progress for you is great. Definitely approach this as an interactive workout video (with a couple neat games) than as a videogame that's good for you.

I played around with it for a couple of hours last night. The first thing that kinda jarred my start-up impressions is the initial BMI rating. I'm 5'10 and 172lbs. I'm a runner and occasional trail biker and am in decent shape. I'm still recovering from a knee injury that laid me up for a few months so I'm a little heavy right now, but when I'm in prime workout condition I weigh between 165-168lbs. This thing was telling me my ideal weight should be 155lbs! I can only assume it doesn't think you need any muscle weight. The message here is don't put too much stock into the whole BMI thing. It's a guesstimate at best. You can still use it as a baseline to see how much your changing your score though.

The training is presented well and the board mechanics work very well within each exercise/game. I was surprised at the sensitivity of the board. It picks up every wiggle, shift, and crouch. If you have ever played Brain Age, it uses the same system to introduce you to the exercises and motivate you to participate, etc. An animated Wii Board is your motivator and I couldn't shake the thought that he reminded me way too much of that damned animated paper clip for MS Office.

The exercises and games are harder than they appear at first glance. I think it's much like any new controller, with practice and learning what the game expects they'll become a breeze and improve your balance to boot.

I do see many of the activities getting fairly repetitive and I could find no way to customize any of the exercises and games. Judging from the grayed out exercises, it looks like you just unlock a couple of harder modes, but can't set your own lengths, times, etc. Even without customizations there is plenty to keep you busy for quite some time.

In anticipation of the Wii Fit release I threw We Ski in my Gamefly gueue a while back and received it last week. We Ski is a very basic game (at a budget price) and simply offers a mountain with multiple ski slopes. You receive a score on each slope based on time, tricks, etc. There's also multiple little quests you can perform.

We Ski worked great with the board. Once again I was surprised by the level of sensitivity given by the board. I could quickly shift back and forth to build up speed or just do more of a sway and zig zag all over a slope going down. I'm not a real life skier, so I can't say how realistic it feels, but it worked intuitively.

nsmike wrote:

Nsmike, I have normal pile carpeting and it worked fine. The only requirement listed is that the center of the board not be in contact with the floor. The board comes with some extenders for the feet that will elevate it more if you have a high pile carpet. Not sure if that will address your padding issue, but it's all I see with the package.

BMI is all but useless. It's like doing your finances by weighing your wallet. A pound does not necessarily equal a pound. You could be 5'10" 155# @ 20% body fat or a super lean 5'10" 155# @ 8% body fat and your pixelated Japanese trainer would give you a big kancho finger up either way based on BMI.

I'm surprised they didn't use resistive measurement plates, like a Tanita bodyfat scale. Still not all that accurate but at least it's a measurement of a valid unit rather than your Skrumple value, and if used correctly they're consistent so it does provide a decent measurement of progress.

Before I joined GWJ the only game I ever pre-ordered was MechCommander 1. Now that I have a good source of pre-release game info I find myself lusting after games that everybody else wants. Amazon actually delivered mine a day early, I've done exercises 3 days in a row now, which is a new record for me.

I'll reiterate what other folks have been saying, it's not necessarily so fun that you'll pick it up to play games, but if you need that extra "oomf" to get yourself to exercise when you already mean to but can find excuses not to, it's a great tool.

My wife and I have been working on losing weight, using a tool called DietPower -- it's kind of a "nutritionist in a box." You put in your weight regularly, tell it what you've been eating, it figures out your metabolism and lets you sets goals for weight loss, suggests foods that complement what you've had already for the day for a balanced diet (no min/maxing like low-carb, low-fat, whatever, just reasonable balance). We've each lost close to 30 pounds since Christmas, but the one thing that we haven't really done is much exercise, we've pretty much been doing it entirely by calorie reduction.

I'm hoping that I can keep up using Wii Fit enough to actually make sure that I'm not burning off muscle while I'm losing weight, and it also gives you that extra boost of spare calories in the bank so you can eat more things that satisfy, making it easier to continue dieting without feeling like you're depriving yourself.

I put really conservative values into Wii Fit for how many calories I expect I burn in an average session, and it easily "pays" for breakfast such that I can have more calories for lunch and dinner. =)

The biggest potential I saw with Wii Fit when it was announced is simply the ability to have a training regimen that's doled out to you on a scheduled basis (daily, every other day, weekly, whatever) and catalogued for you, so you don't have to keep track with pen and paper. One of the biggest obstacles to me going to the gym on a regular schedule is that I'm constantly forgetting how many reps of a given exercise I did the previous day, the order in which I did the exercises, what actual exercises I did, etc (this is partially due to my own laziness and inability to pay attention). Wii Fit has the ability to assign you exercises, track the number of reps done, how quickly you did them, and provide goals and charts of your progress... an electronic personal trainer. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but if it does anything similar to these things, I'll buy it. The possibility of a bargain-priced "Wii Fit 2" with extra features/exercises is also enticing. Then you wouldn't have to necessarily buy hardware with it.

And don't get me started on damn unlockables. Unlockables in a casual game? It's insane.
