Guitar Hero: World Tour (formerly GH4) Catch-All

Is there no Guitar Hero IV thread yet? I got my Game Informer yesterday, and I have to say, I like the direction Neversoft is taking the genre.

For those who haven't seen the new Game Informer, Activision/Neversoft is basically doing everything Harmonix has been talking about (online band world tour, recording studio for original user created music, Tiger Woods/Tony Hawk-style character creation, a below Easy setting for little kids and grandma's to play along, etc., etc.), and with improved hardware (drumset has 3 pads, 2 cymbals, bass, and they're focusing on quiet!).

Now if they follow the pricing scheme of the previous GH series for DLC, and they're not going to let their instruments be compatible with other games (ie the PS3 debacle) I'm going to have to stick with Rock Band. But competition is a good thing, I can't wait to see what Harmonix has in store next.

Yeah, but isn't the next release going to be Guitar Hero: Aerosmith anyway? I'd imagine IV is still a long ways off.

Yeah, it's Fall '08 (maybe they'll beat the Thanksgiving sales rush, like Rock Band last year). The article mentioned that they'll be using the bandmate animation interaction technology that will be rolled out with GH:Aerosmith. It's still pretty exciting to me... maybe I'll post a picture of the drum set tonight... it's too bad Activision's behavior in the recent past suggests that their new kit will work only with GH branded products, I'd really love to have that drum set for my Rock Band...

(Did I mention all of their peripherals, including drums, are going to be wireless?? )

The drums do look sweet and I love the wireless idea. If only they could be used for Rock Band.

Guitar Hero III

Hoping it gets better from there.

Speaking of, my wireless guitar is now having issues, and apparently it's not uncommon.

I wasn't a fan of GHIII's boss battles at all. Hopefully they go back to a more traditional play through experience in the next one.

I have two wireless guitars and never had an issue with either of them.

Will GH4 have tracks from the actual bands , or is it going to be mostly cover bands like older GH games?

I haven't had any issues with my 360 either. Doesn't mean the quality control wasn't crap.

One of the articles I read stated that it would be almost entirely master tracks but it's early and that could be wrong. I can see them wanting as many masters as possible though to give them another bullet point for the box.

Very true. I guess I'm actually lucky in that I still have a launch 360 too. I did get a bum GHII controller right out of the box when it was released. Even the replacement I got had to have the whammy bar tweaked.

I actually didn't mind the covers so much. I'm happy either way so long as the recording band is good. I thought all over the covers they've done since the original right up until GH3 have all been top notch.

Can't comment on Rock Band but considering the Harmonix involvement I would suspect the same, or are they all master tracks?

btw, GH3 is $60 or less today on all systems (edit: at Amazon.) I just bought one myself for the Wii.

The few covers that I can recall; Rush comes to mind, are really done well. I've not had a problem with any of them where I already knew the song(s). They all sound pretty good to my uneducated ear.

Oh yeah, I should have put in a disclaimer that I have a hearing problem so what sounds good to me may not sound so good to someone who actually has a normal range of hearing.

I'm a drum player in Rock Band now and I can't see how Activision can screw up the drum game. With guitar charts you are reducing 6 strings down to 1 and 22 frets down to five, so there's lots of room for interpretation. Drums are much more basic, most everything is played with the hi-hat, snare, and kick. A drum note chart should look very similar in either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. And we all know Red Octane makes better controllers than Harmonix. Aside from the kick pedal, the worst part of the Rock Band drum set is the lack of true cymbals. With this set you can play with that natural hands-crossed form. It's a great step in the right direction. Don't know what pressure sensitive pads would do for us, though, unless it's analog sensitivity.

We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I really like the look of this drum kit over the RB version, and agree that the addition of actual symbols are a step in the right direction without making it too complex. Harmonix does have a good track record for making peripherals and don't forget its WIRELESS!

It should be noted that the Wii version of GHWT, unlike GH3, will support DLC, too.

I was thinking the same thing. Add in the noise reduction, and you're going to have a very solid product. Dammit. I have too many plastic peripherals in the house already. Two toy drum sets in as many years won't go over well. By then I should be able to use the, "It costs less than a tank of gas," argument.

Looks interesting, but man, I really really hope the drums are compatible with RB, or I'm going to have a hard time justifying buying more friggin' peripherals. We don't have room to store what we have now...

Doesn't seem too likely considering the fact that the RB drum-kit had four pads (plus pedal) whereas the GHTW one has five (plus pedal).

Gotta agree. Compatibility is a huge issue for me. I'm not keeping two sets of fake toy drums in the house. I don't even have room for the one set I have and if I've got to choose between them I'll stick with the Harmonix product. That is, at least until Neversoft can prove they can make a better game, which they sure as hell didn't with Guitar Hero III (IMO).

Right, but I mean if the GH4 one works in RockBand, I can sell my old drum kit and use it for both.

It's interesting. Since I'm fairly certain the peripherals will NOT be compatible, it will all come down to tracklists and DLC. I thought the tracklist on GH3 was much stronger than Rock Band out of the box (DLC notwithstanding) - if they got rid of boss battles it would have been much stronger. I also really, really dislike covers and thought GH3 made good strides in that direction. Rock Band's DLC was infinitely better, though, which is huge.

A couple articles I have read stated that GH:WT is going to be all master tracks and have the largest track list (out of the box I would assume) for any of the games yet.

From the Activision Press Release dated 05/22/08 wrote:
Delivering the largest on-disc set list in a music-rhythm game to-date, Guitar Hero World Tour is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest classic and modern rock bands of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime and many more. Additionally, the game will offer significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles.

WHAT THE HELL MAN

Is this confirmed? Why hasn't Rock Band done this?

I've seen and played a bit of Rock Band and it's really cool, but I can't justify a 900-1,000 dollar expense just for it (xbox + game)

I will buy the new Guitar Hero if Downloadable content is available for Wii.

Activision is stating it will be the first GH game to have DLC for the Wii. It should also be noted that Neversoft isn't making the Wii version...Vicarious Visions is handling it.

Activision said that GH3 on Wii would have DLC, too, but then never delivered. Have they confirmed that GHWT will have it out-of-the-box, and not as a "it'll come later, but maybe we'll just forget about it" after-the-fact add-on?

The more I think about it, the more those early comments from Harmonix about Rock Band being a "platform" seem very spot-on, with all the connotations that implies. With GHWT on the horizon, and many people limited by loungeroom space or spousal harmony on the number of crappy plastic peripherals we can own, we really are entering a whole new era of Console Wars.
