AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! (Updated 5/23)
So after not having played baseball for about 20 years, I signed up with some guys that run a sandlot hardball league. I was definitely the old fat guy of the group. The team I ended up with are bunch of American Legion guys, so I was the real weak link, but still played some first base and hid in RF for most of the day.
I was o-2 in the first game, with two groundouts. But only one guy on our team managed to get any hits, and he picked up 3 including a walk-off grand slam to win the game. So I was just happy that I got wood on the ball.
I got my swing down in game two going 2-2, both of which were rockets. I was pretty psyched. I seriously had not hit anything but slow pitch softball for 20 years, so it felt pretty good. There is no feeling like smacking a fastball with the meat of your bat. It's what I lived for back in the day. The only reason to work on playing great defense, and I was a darn good first baseman, was to get those outs so I could hit again. But then Karma took a swipe at me.
Late in the second game, a guy on the other team hit a bomb into the street, hitting a passing car in the fender. I guess I understand why woman was upset, but she called the police before anyone could even talk to her. So we just kept playing.
I was up first for our team in the next inning. She had parked her car right down the RF line. Yeah, I thought it wold be funny if I could launch one down there (I'm left-handed, so it would be easier to pull one down that line for me). With a 2-2 count I took a big cut, and fouled it off. But my bad left knee took the brunt of the swing, and I twisted it up so bad, I'm sure I tore the hell out of some cartilage in my knee. I had to be helped off the field. That's what I get for trying to be a show-off sh*t head, instead of just playing ball.
I have no stability in my knee now, and it swelled up to the size of a small watermelon last night, despite the ice packs and Advil. I'm headed to the doc this mourning. I'm pretty sure I'm looking at arthroscopic surgery for the knee, which would be the third on on it. I'm pretty bummed, as I was having a blast playing ball. It had gotten me motivated to start working out and get in shape again, as I really don't move too well. I was kind of a Steve Balboni for the day.
It just sucks going from such a great high to so much pain. I'm pretty miserable today, about the pain, and the lost chance to play some ball this summer.

I applaud your ability to play hard ball at your age. I'm not even a good softball player, let alone baseball.
Like you, I was a 1B/RF back in high school. But I was only mediocre at 1B and even worse in RF.
My batting mechanics are horrible and I just recently learned how to rotate my hips and drive off my back foot.
Plus I could hardly keep up with the fastball back in high school. I doubt my abilities has improved any since

I broke my thumb junior year wrestling the JV match so the senior I beat for the spot could wrestle the varsity match in his last home meet ever. Missed out on Regionals because of that. Its ok. Not like I think about it every day. Wondering what could have been. Wishing to relive that match so I could do it differently.

That really sucks Jayhawker. I had a serious foot injury that has kept me out of competitive hockey for a long time. Luckily I'm young enough (22 now, 19 at the time of the injury) to recuperate.

Yay for old injuries coming back to haunt! Every summer I get the bright idea to try and play baseball every now and then, despite knowing that my shoulder's dead. Several dislocations have leave me throwing like I did when I was 8.
Heal up and go be the guy that sits behind the plate heckling the other team.
Man, sorry to hear about that Jay'. Mend well and quickly. I got the bug (and luckily didn't have the temptation you had, or I'd be in intensive care right now:>), brought out my mitt, bat and hardballs and went to my brothers. I've not played in allot of years. Played softball fast pitch in City leagues, but that was 15-20 years ago. Did get together with a friend about 10 or so ago and tried to shag some balls and hit. Lordy, one must be exceedingly ego free. We could barely hit the hardball out of the infield. And throwing a hardball was, well, it was o.k. if we were 'really close';>) To get back to my bro' and I, just played catch from about 20 ft for about half hour. Next day had some numbness to the arms *Chuckle*. But hey, when you are starting your sixth decade, life likes to remind you your body ain't what your brain thinks (or imagines) it is:>)

Just got back from the doc. He drained a bucketload of blood from my knee, so it is a bit better. But he is pretty sure I tore my ACL. I get an MRI tomorrow.
Looks like more ice, and some vicodin tonight.

When I was a sophomore in high school I rolled my ankle and broke it playing basketball on the last day of school before summer vacation. I was not pleased. I believe the statement "AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!" was very appropriate.
Ugh. That sucks. Hopefully the doc's wrong, but every time I've heard of a doctor telling someone it looks like an ACL, it's been an ACL. All the same, good luck with the MRI tomorrow!

Yeah, had my ACL replaced, it is not fun but pretty much an outpatient procedure unless there are complications. My leg is still not 100% since the MRI missed something on the right side of my knee. I can actually dislocate it if I move it into an awkward position. Sux.

It never really goes away. I have a lot of friends that coach just to get some mat time and remember what it was like to compete. I still think back to my brief collegiate wrestling career, and wonder what if coach hadn't gotten kicked off campus? What if the school hadn't shut down the program?

I feel for you Jayhawker, I had a very similar thing happen to me in April. I finally had gotten time to go play some soccer, and wouldn't you know it some other idiots who were messing around end up tripping each other and roll right into my left leg/knee as I was planting it. This is of course about 10 feet from where the ball actually is. Ended up pulling my MCL out of my bone (along with a small bone fragment), tearing a bit of my ACL and a very small amount of my cartilage. Hopefully I get off the cruches in 2 weeks.
Best of luck for you, if it is the ACL I hope the surgery goes off without a hitch.

Well I broke my toe last night. Stubbed the hell out of the little guy and he's all purple today and can't move. Hardly compares to a torn ACL, but hey! We're brothers in pain!
