AoC: Will they allow Add-Ons / Mods (any official word)
Sunday, May 18th, 2008 - 1:50am
Has there been any official word regarding add-ons to Conan similar in some ways to what was allowed in WoW?
Specifically does anyone know if something like "Cartographer" with the "GPS" quest arrow would be allowed/permitted?

Cartographer and the GPS really aren't all that necessary, with all the quest aids built into the game, to be honest. Plus, you can make map notes (not sure if they are permanent or not), to boot.
However, I'd kill for a Bartender3 or Trinity or Bongoes... It's a fun game, but I really don't like their pop up windows and button bars the way they are given to us in game.
On the bright side, I noticed that the release allows for all sorts of key-binding, which is infinitely better than what I saw in Open Beta.

I would love some Pitbull and Bartender for AoC.
If you've been in a party at all, the party UI is ass.
I'm really glad I'm not a healer because all you get is
Name
Bar
And it's in less space than that.

From what I remember reading they will not allow addons, mods, or macros (G15 could be usefull however). I amglad if this is the case. Personally I think you should play the game and not bot it... IMO

I don't know what G15 is ... my wife just dearly loved that directional pointer for quests we had in WoW -- that blew her away. She has a tough time with directions in-game sometimes.

I am not sure how being able to size your buttons, move your UI boxes around, and scale the interface equates to botting.
I could care less if we see "IWinBot" AddOns (actually, I prefer them not to)... but the interface really is ugly and clumsy, in my (not so humble) opinion.
Of all the AddOns that I use in WoW, the ones I'd love to see comprable AoC equivalents are:
FuBar (everything condensed along top/bottom of screen.. just wonderful)
Bartender (gah, I dislike AoC buttons)
ag_UnitFrames (The group box is kind of lame and small in AoC)
Some I'd like, if not critical:
ClockFu (Having the time in game is nice)
Friend/GuildFu (Their Friend/Guild box I just don't like as much)
QuestFu/MonkeyQuest (something that's nicer/easier to read)
All of what I want is purely cosmetic, doesn't change the game play or game balance, but it does improve your enjoyment of the game - which is (obviously) an important factor.

As one of the resident healers, I can say without question that the group UI is indeed ass. A tiny window miles away from my hot-bar (I admit it, I'm generally a mouse-clicky type as opposed to key bindings) and none of the other pertinent information is anywhere near the group window.
The only saving grace (for Bear Shaman at least) is that my heals do not require targeting to take effect. I have a HoT and an instant heal that function in a cone AoE in front of me. As long as the person I'm trying to heal is in my line of sight basically. That is the catch however, you need to be in my line of sight cone otherwise I won't be healing you. Near as I can tell, targeting means absolutely nothing for my heals.
From my limited understanding of what all you can do with a Nostromo, you could set it up to "auto-combo". Press 7(combo starter) > Wait > 1 > Wait > 3 > Wait > Q > Wait > E > Wait > 2 all tied to a single button press.
I agree that for the most part, UI tweaks aren't game breaking. They're useful tools to allow you to organize your buttons/frames in a way that makes logical sense to you. Will it improve your individual performance? Probably, but they don't make the game easier by default.
Allowing add-ons like Decursive (Pre-BC) that allow you auto-decurse or auto-heal would be detrimental, but most add-ons are not of that variety.

Im the same way. I have taught myself to attack using the hotbar keys, but for healing I always seem to click and heal.
I did find out that you can drag the party window around though. I moved mine down near my own health bar so I can better keep an eye on things.
Not perfect, as I still would like more information out of the party window, but its still better than having it all the way in the top corner of my screen.

edit: This is the last "official" word I've seen on this. Right after posting I discovered they added this.
edit x2: There is a Readme.txt file installed at "C:\Program Files\Funcom\Age of Conan\cd_image\Gui\Customized" (or wherever AoC is installed) that has important info for anyone looking to do UI work.

the " allow XML reskinning" stuff is the most important part.

I tried editing the colors for my chat window last night. The game isn't paying attention to TextColors.xml if it is in the Customized folder. Right now if you want to mod the chat color you have to replace the TextColors.xml in Default everytime after the launcher scans (because it will replace it). The other option is to replace it and the run the game from AgeOfConan.exe.

I want to play with these but I am hesitant at this point I want to see how they will handle the 2 additional directional attacks at 40.
Same with my n52 I bought last night I want to get us our city plot rolling before I mess around and take a night just to tweak.

The Mirage UI skin looks good. He's got two versions. Normal size and one with reduced size if you find the buttons too big. Im gonna check out the scaled down one.
This is the same guy who did UI's for LOTRO and WOW (Mirage UI for WoW which was previously known as Insomniax). So keep an eye out for him, as his work is usually pretty solid.

Ah! That's good stuff. I used Insomniax when I was new to AddOns and early into WoW and it was solid work. I dumped it and created my own suite later on, but I learned a lot about what I wanted out of the UI from his efforts.
I'll definitely keep and eye on his stuff for AoC. Right now, I hesitate to use anything as I figure they'll be ironing out the kinks and adjusting it often.

I'm using the Mirage UI and it's so nice to have all the bars right there on the bottom, the little default 2 side bars the game gives you ended up annoying me a bit. Can't wait to see what he can do with new versions!

Hrm.. I might jump into his stuff earlier than planned knowing a trusted Goodjer is already giving it good grades.

I'll definitely check out Mirage when I get up and running. Insomniax was the very first UI compilation I experimented with in WoW and I was always impressed by how well it all worked together. The guy definitely knows what he's doing, good to know he's devoting some time to AoC.

I played while running the Mirage UI tonight and so far so good for me.

I used his scaled down version and Im in absolute love with it so far. The condensed size and the movement of the character debuffs out of the way of the casting bar are marked improvements over the default UI.

I dont have a pet class, but Mirage is the kinda mod maker that will take constructive feedback and make improvements. So hopefully its taken care of soon. The only bug I've encountered so far, is if you show "target of target" sometimes during combat you can get a separation in your bars. Hard to explain other than to say theres a gap in the bars that wasnt there before. It doesnt happen 100% of the time and can be avoided completely by turning off target of target for the meantime.
I still leave target of target on, as I enjoy the feature and the gap in the hotbars isnt game breaking or even an annoyance. Still, thats something I would imagine Mirage will address soon, as he is aware of it.

I installed Mirage last night and I'm digging it.

Wait a second. In the later levels some classes will be able to use lower right and lower left attacks, which will push the current three attacks up a row. Does Mirage take care of that or will the buttons end up covering each other?

Mirage is great for me, so far. I used the slightly smaller version of it since I play at a pretty high res. I'm looking forward to seeing where he takes it in the future.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
from his faq's for version 1.2 (released 5/23/2008):
- Modified the BottomBar to prevent it from getting distorted when certain classes hit level 40 and obtain Lower Right and Lower Left attacks. Level 40 and above players please submit feedback!
We got any 40+ characters yet? Might want to give him a shout-out and let him know how it works.

Well, I haven't been playing AoC as much as I'd like to because of work, but I have been lurking in some different irc channels and the rumor there is expect lua in 3 months.
